Queensland road toll rises to 16 after Central Queensland collision

The number of fatalities on Queensland roads has risen to 16 since December 9 after a man died in hospital after a two-car crash in central Queensland on Thursday afternoon.

The 39-year-old was driving a sedan that collided with four-wheel drive utility on the Capricorn Highway at The Gemfields, near Emerald.

Four others were taken to hospital for treatment.

Thursday's fatality has lifted the number of deaths on Queensland roads to 16 since December 9, compared with five fatalities during the same period last year.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said excessive speed continued to be a significant issue in Queensland, with about one in four fatalities involving a speeding driver.

"That is why speed management and enforcement remains a priority for police as we do everything we can to create a safer environment on our roads," he said.
