HERE they are: the funniest and most mortifying moments that Aussies shared on social media in 2016.

One of the year’s most widely shared videos actually occurred in the first days of 2016. Cricketer Chris Gayle’s jawdropping attempt to ask reporter Mel McLaughlin out for a drink live on air on January 4 led to much discussion about the line between sexual harassment and harmless flirting. There were brickbats for Gayle, who was labelled a sleaze, and kudos for McLaughlin, who was hailed for her composure.

The end of the year brought us another viral video that divided opinions. The footage of zookeeper Greig Tonkins punching a male adult kangaroo in the face became an online sensation, with the original clip being viewed more than 37 million times and spawning dozens of spin-offs and reaction videos.

Morning TV gave us plenty of moments — from “undies hero” Daniel McConnell to not one but two Cash Cow calls that didn’t go quite to plan.

What that all says about modern Australia, we couldn’t begin to say, but as a point of comparison, here are the best viral videos from around the world in 2016.
