The Christmas Car that's lighting up Canberra

Forget Deck the Halls, a Canberra driver has decked his car out in 10,000 sparkling lights in a bid to spread Christmas cheer around the city.

On Tuesday, with the help of four friends, Jordan Wallace rigged up nine sets of colourful lights to his Holden Astra using not much more than some tape.

"It took a lot of time and patience and lots of non-residue duct tape," he said.

"There is a big battery in the boot which is running to an invertor that's converting the 12-volt power from the car to 240-volts to power the nine sets of lights."

The impressive colour and almost uniform placement of the lights didn't come without practise.

In 2015, he tested out putting 1000 warm white lights on the car and decided this year it was time to step things up.

Since Wednesday 21st, Jordan and friends have been driving through the city and to popular areas for Christmas lights displays turning heads as they pump Christmas songs on the stereo.

"My favourite thing is that people look, look a bit confused and then look immediately joyous," he said.

"I've never had a house that's been good for decorating, but have always wanted to do Christmas lights. This is something a bit more unique than decorating a house. It switches them on in places where people aren't expecting to see them."

While driving the glowing car, Jordan and his friends are yelling "Merry Christmas" to others, stopping for photos and handing out candy canes with #ChristmasCar printed on them to grow their social media following.

The Christmas Car will be on the road until December 24, stopping into Bunda and Lonsdale Streets as well as the Christmas in the City festival and popular north and southside suburban lights displays.
