You shouldn't feel bad for being concerned about this; in my opinion pursuing interaction with people online like that is definitely crossing a boundary. It's clear you care for your relationship and that's admirable, not shameful. I recall a friend of mine recently went through something similar and managed to turn it around without breaking her relationship. She even made a video about it, but I can't seem to find it atm.
