The final night of the Christmas in the City food markets in Civic Square has been cancelled due to forecast storms.

Instead, Friday night will be the final night of the sweet tooth dessert, cocktail and canapes markets, which include deep-fried Golden Gaytimes from Shorty's.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Canberra has the chance of a thunderstorm forecast for Saturday afternoon.

In a Facebook post, In The City Canberra wrote: "We have made the tough decision to cancel the last night of the food markets due to the predicted stormy weather conditions and the risks that they impose to attendees".

It was the first year for the Christmas in the City food markets, with a planned nine nights of stalls based around four different themes, alongside handicraft markets, a concert headlined by Shannon Noll and dachshund and pug races.

It's the second cancellation for the event, with the handicraft markets cancelled on December 19 after stallholders pulled out due to poor sales.

The food markets are on Friday December 23 from 5-10pm. Entry to the event is by donation the Red Nose.
