Donald "Don" McLean III (born October 2, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter best known for the 1971 album American Pie, containing the songs "American Pie" and "Vincent".
McLean's grandfather and father were also named Donald McLean. The Buccis, the family of McLean's mother, Elizabeth, came from Abruzzo in central Italy. They left Italy and settled in Port Chester, New York, at the end of the 19th century. He has other extended family in Los Angeles and Boston.
Though some of his early musical influences included Frank Sinatra and Buddy Holly, as a teenager, McLean became interested in folk music, particularly the Weavers' 1955 recording At Carnegie Hall. Childhood asthma meant that McLean missed long periods of school, particularly music lessons, and although he slipped back in his studies, his love of music was allowed to flourish. He often performed shows for family and friends. By age 16 he had bought his first guitar (a Harmony acoustic archtop with a sunburst finish) and began making contacts in the music business, becoming friends with folk singer Erik Darling and Fred Hellerman, both members of the Weavers. Hellerman said, "He called me one day and said, 'I'd like to come and visit you', and that's what he did! We became good friends - he has the most remarkable music memory of anyone I've ever known." McLean recorded his first studio sessions (with singer Lisa Kindred) while still in prep school.
American Pie may refer to:
On February 3, 1959, rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with the pilot, Roger Peterson. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean so referred to it in his song "American Pie".
At the time, Holly and his band, consisting of Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup, and Carl Bunch, were playing on the "Winter Dance Party" tour across the Midwest. Rising artists Valens and Richardson had joined the tour as well.
The long journeys between venues on board the cold, uncomfortable tour buses adversely affected the performers, with cases of flu and even frostbite. After stopping at Clear Lake to perform, and frustrated by such conditions, Holly fatefully decided to charter a plane to reach their next venue in Moorhead, Minnesota. Richardson, who had flu, swapped places with Jennings, taking the latter's seat on the plane, while Allsup lost his seat to Valens on a coin toss.
"And I" is a song written by American R&B singer Ciara, and produced by Adonis Shropshire for Ciara's first album, Goodies (2004). It was released as the album's fourth and final single on August 30, 2005 (see 2005 in music) in North America.
The song was originally the third choice for the fourth single. Ciara has mentioned in an interview that "Thug Style", "Hotline" or "Pick up the Phone" would be the fourth single, but when Ciara suggested "And I" to executives at her previous record label LaFace, they were unhappy because they wanted "Next to You" to be the fourth single.
At the time of the U.S. release of "And I", Ciara's collaboration with Bow Wow, "Like You", and her collaboration with Missy Elliott, "Lose Control", were at the height of their popularity. "And I" peaked at 96 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and 27 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, which were poor positions compared to those attained by the first three singles from the album Goodies. It was not released outside North America because of this, and it is Ciara's least successful single.
The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June, 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941, acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. It is regarded as among Van Gogh's finest works, and is one of the most recognized paintings in the history of Western culture.
In the aftermath of the 23 December 1888 breakdown that resulted in the self-mutilation of his left ear, Van Gogh voluntarily admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole lunatic asylum on 8 May 1889. Housed in a former monastery, Saint-Paul-de-Mausole catered to the wealthy and was less than half full when Van Gogh arrived, allowing him to occupy not only a second-story bedroom but also a ground-floor room for use as a painting studio.

And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while. But february made me shiver With every paper I'd deliver. Bad news on the doorstep; I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride, But something touched me deep inside The day the music died. So bye-bye, miss american pie. Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." Did you write the b...

Don McLean - American Pie (the story behind) Top 2000 a gogo - The Netherlands december 2011
The music business has become an investment as a PR tool for a band's next tour, the singer-songwriter, Don McLean has told BBC HARDtalk. "It's not the content, it's a mindset of business," he said. "Anyone who is really contrary, who says something, that is really truthful and goes against certain things is going to find themselves blacklisted," he added.
The legend that is The Donster appeared live on Alan Titchmarsh's afternoon to talk about his greatness. :-)
As Don McLean prepares the release of his next album "Botanical Gardens," the singer-songwriter is also letting go of a piece of "American Pie," his enduring hit from 1971. A 16-page original manuscript that includes several drafts of the song is slated to be auctioned in April. It's expected to sell for as much as $1.5 million and may shed light on the song's meaning, which has long been a bit of a mystery; McLean has only confirmed that the line "the day the music died" refers to the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson on the same day in 1959. But now the highest bidder has a chance to gain insight into McLean's thinking as he penned the lyrics, he told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri on Wednesday. "I think they'll know what was going on in my mind. That's about a...

In 1980 Don McLean had a huge hit in the Netherlands with his version of the Roy Orbison classic 'Crying'. He came to Holland to perform it live in a tv-show. I had the opportunity of interviewing him before the rehearsals in a concerthall in Zaandam. It was recorded with a cassette recorder, so the sound quality is not very good. However, Don talks about things that happen in his life, his succes, his fears, his private life - he had just met a girl in Israel he fell in love with.
Dick Clark interviews Don McLean. They talk about McLean's famous song on American pie. McLeary talks about his song "Vincent" and another song that got nominated for a grammy. One of his most famous songs was a hit first in Holland and England, as well as around the world before it hit the charts in America. This clip is from a 1983 Irish TV programme called 'Siamsa Cois Laoi' which is Irish for 'Music Beside the Lee'. The story goes is that the Irish built a giant new Gaelic (Irish Football) stadium just ouside Ireland's second largest city Cork, beside the River Lee which flows through Cork. The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) had a huge debt to pay off, so someone suggested a giant music festival every summer with a host of irish bands and a famous headline artist. Don McLean fitted the bill on two of the yearly shows, this being the first. The irish artists included bands like The Furey Brothers and Davy Arthur, The Wolfetones and various local artists. Problems struck when there was a TV strike just after the show had been recorded and about 8 months went by before they figured...

[Chorus]
Well you better Jump, Jump, Jump,
If you wanna' live at all.
Yes you better Jump, Jump, Jump,
Even though you're bound to fall
Cause' they're gonna' make you sorry gonna' make you cry
If you don't Jump, Jump, Jump, into the seat by and by.
Well, you Jump for joy and happiness,
You Jump when things go right.
You Jump when you're asleep
And you hear a strange voice in the night.
Sometimes we get to use to things, they don't mean what they did.
I know that what make my floor, make another fellows lid.
(Chorus)
Well, I'm always on the lookout,
For somethin' fresh and new.
Like bein' on a cookout with a crazy Kangaroo.
Just when I think I've found a place where I'm sure I wanna' stop.
My body won't quit cookin' and my mind begins to hop.
(Chorus)
Well, I'm thinkin' about a thousand things,
I'm a losin' lots of sleep.
I'm glidin' on my inner wings, I'm gettin' set to leap.
I'm ridin' on my pony, I'm lettin' out my rope.
I'm lookin' for an idea that a big bar of soap.
(Chorus)
(Instrumental Break)
(Chorus)
Well, one man was cold and hungry,
One man was rich and well.
One man stood at the window, as the crowd began to yell.
While the poor man prayed to Jesus and the rich man made a deal.
One man was standing naked yellin' do what you feel.
(Chorus)
