Interestingly, Swiss-born author Alain de Botton is much more into Stendhal’s non-fiction than into his novels. In 2011, he came to the Institut français du Royaume-Uni to discuss Stendhal's life and writing, explaining how the 19th century French author had influenced his work and encouraged him to become a writer.
Born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1969, Alain de Botton now lives in London, where he regularly writes for the British press. His books of essay, in which he addresses topics as diverse as love, travel, architecture and literature, have been described as a 'philosophy of everyday life'.
Boyd Tonkin, literary editor of The Independent, chaired the talk.

"Capter la voix de l'auteur, tel est le défi que je me suis imposé. La voix de Stendhal est présente tout au long du roman. Et nous sommes au royaume de la subtilité. Une voix comme un fil électrique rattaché aux Lumières du XVIIIème siècle, légèreté et enthousiasme. Stendhal est amoureux de Mozart, de Cimarosa: « Les jours de bonheur, vous préférerez Cimarosa. Dans les moments de tristesse, Mozart aura l'avantage. » Stendhal est amoureux de la fougue, de l'énergie, de l'imprévu. « Il s'agit de ne pas bâiller d'ennui. » Des émotions vives, l'ardeur, le courage. Il écrit par exemple : « Le caractère des Français est gai, brave, moqueur, insouciant. » Stendhal est le prince de la nuance, de la complexité. Et il n'oublie jamais « la vérité, l'âpre vérité ».
C'est pourquoi “Le Rouge et le Noir” est aussi un grand roman politique. Aucune aigreur, aucun ressentiment, ses pensées intérieures sont sans acrimonie. Ce qui est le grand art. Le grand art justement de l'esprit des Lumières. Et ce qui est ravissant, ce sont toutes les voix intérieures de tous les personnages, les monologues secrets, l'invention de l'intime en soi, ce qui s'appelle penser par soi-même au fur et à mesure que se déroule l'action.
« L'intime du cerveau » comme l'écrivait Baudelaire à propos de Delacroix : « Il donne à voir l'intime du cerveau, une intense méditation. » Stendhal a inventé cette intimité du cerveau dans le roman. C'est pourquoi ces voix intérieures qui courent dans “Le Rouge et le Noir”, ont été comme des fugues, des intermèdes presque chuchotés, quelque chose d'inouï pour attraper le rythme, la musique de ce roman."

Stendhal
(Marie Henri Beyle; Grenoble, Francia, 1783-París, 1842) Novelista francés. Huérfano de madre desde 1789, se crió entre su padre y su tía. Rechazó las virtudes monárquicas y religiosas que le inculcaron y expresó pronto la voluntad de huir de su ciudad natal. Abiertamente republicano, acogió con entusiasmo la ejecución del rey y celebró incluso el breve arresto de su padre. A partir de 1796 fue alumno de la Escuela central de Grenoble y en 1799 logró el primer premio de matemáticas. Viajó a París para ingresar en la Escuela Politécnica, pero enfermó y no se pudo presentar a la prueba de acceso.
Gracias a Pierre Daru, un pariente lejano que se convertiría en su protector, entró a trabajar en el ministerio de Guerra. Enviado por el ejército como ayudante del general Michaud, en 1800 descubrió Italia, país que tomó como su patria de elección. Desengañado por la vida militar, abandonó el ejército en 1801. Entre los salones y teatros parisienses, siempre enamorado de una mujer diferente, empezó (sin éxito) a cultivar ambiciones literarias.
En precaria situación económica, Daru le consiguió un nuevo puesto como intendente militar en Brunswick, destino en que permaneció entre 1806 y 1808. Admirador incondicional de Napoleón, ejerció diversos cargos oficiales y participó en las campañas imperiales. En 1814, a la caída del corso, se exilió en Italia, fijó su residencia en Milán y efectuó varios viajes por la península italiana.
Publicó sus primeros libros de crítica de arte bajo el seudónimo de L. A. C. Bombet, y en 1817 apareció Roma, Nápoles y Florencia, un ensayo más original, donde mezcla la crítica con recuerdos personales, en el que utilizó por primera vez el seudónimo de Stendhal. El gobierno austriaco le acusó de apoyar el movimiento independentista italiano, por lo que abandonó Milán en 1821, pasó por Londres y se instaló de nuevo en París, cuando terminó la persecución de los partidarios de Napoleón.
Dandy afamado, frecuentaba los salones de manera asidua, mientras sobrevivía con los ingresos que le procuraban sus colaboraciones en algunas revistas literarias inglesas. En 1822 publicó Sobre el amor, ensayo basado en buena parte en sus propias experiencias y en el que expresaba ideas bastante avanzadas; destaca su teoría de la «cristalización», proceso por el que el espíritu, adaptando la realidad a sus deseos, cubre de perfecciones el objeto del deseo.
Asentó su renombre de escritor gracias a la Vida de Rossini y las dos partes de su Racine y Shakespeare, auténtico manifiesto del romanticismo. Después de una relación sentimental con la actriz Clémentine Curial, que duró hasta 1826, emprendió nuevos viajes al Reino Unido e Italia y redactó su primera novela, Armancia. En 1828, sin dinero ni éxito literario, solicitó un puesto en la Biblioteca Real, que no le fue concedido; hundido en una pésima situación económica, la muerte del conde Daru, al año siguiente, le afectó particularmente. Superó este período difícil gracias a los cargos de cónsul que obtuvo primero en Trieste y más tarde en Civitavecchia, mientras se entregaba sin reservas a la literatura.
En 1830 apareció su primera obra maestra: Rojo y negro, una crónica analítica de la sociedad francesa en la Restauración, en la que Stendhal representó las ambiciones de su época y las contradicciones de la emergente sociedad de clases, destacando sobre todo el análisis psicológico de los personajes y el estilo directo y objetivo de la narración.
En 1839 publicó La cartuja de Parma, mucho más novelesca que Rojo y negro, que escribió en tan sólo dos meses y que por su espontaneidad constituye una confesión poética extraordinariamente sincera, aunque sólo recibió el elogio de Balzac. Ambas son novelas de aprendizaje, y participan de rasgos románticos y realistas; en ellas aparece un nuevo tipo de héroe, típicamente moderno, caracterizado por su aislamiento de la sociedad y su enfrentamiento con sus convenciones e ideales, en el que muy posiblemente se refleja en parte la personalidad del propio Stendhal. Falleció de un ataque de apoplejía, sin concluir su última obra, Lamiel, que fue publicada mucho después de su óbito.

Marie-Henri Beyle (23 January 1783 – 23 March 1842), better known by his pen name Stendhal, was a 19th-century French writer. Known for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology, he is considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism in his two novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839).
Born in Grenoble, Isère, he had an unhappy childhood in what he found to be stifling provincial France, disliking his "unimaginative" father and mourning his mother, who had died when he was young. His closest friend was his younger sister, Pauline, with whom he maintained a steady correspondence throughout the first decade of the 19th century.
The military and theatrical worlds of the First French Empire were a revelation to Beyle. He was named an auditor with the Conseil d'État on 3 August 1810, and thereafter took part in the French administration and in the Napoleonic wars in Italy. He travelled extensively in Germany and was part of Napoleon's army in the 1812 invasion of Russia.

El gobierno austriaco le acusó de apoyar el movimiento independentista italiano, por lo que abandonó Milán en 1821, pasó por Londres y se instaló de nuevo en París, cuando terminó la persecución de los partidarios de Napoleón. Dandy afamado, frecuentaba los salones de manera asidua, mientras sobrevivía con los ingresos que le procuraban sus colaboraciones en algunas revistas literarias inglesas. En 1822 publicó Sobre el amor, ensayo basado en buena parte en sus propias experiencias y en el que expresaba ideas bastante avanzadas; destaca su teoría de la «cristalización», proceso por el que el espíritu, adaptando la realidad a sus deseos, cubre de perfecciones el objeto del deseo. Asentó su renombre de escritor gracias a la Vida de Rossini y las dos partes de su Racine y Shakespeare, auténtico manifiesto del romanticismo. Después de una relación sentimental con la actriz Clémentine Curial, que duró hasta 1826, emprendió nuevos viajes al Reino Unido e Italia y redactó su primera novela, Armancia. En 1828, sin dinero ni éxito literario, solicitó un puesto en la Biblioteca Real, que no le fue concedido; hundido en una pésima situación económica, la muerte del conde Daru, al año siguiente, le afectó particularmente. Superó este período difícil gracias a los cargos de cónsul que obtuvo primero en Trieste y más tarde en Civitavecchia, mientras se entregaba sin reservas a la literatura. En 1830 apareció su primera obra maestra: Rojo y negro, una crónica analítica de la sociedad francesa en la Restauración, en la que Stendhal representó las ambiciones de su época y las contradicciones de la emergente sociedad de clases, destacando sobre todo el análisis psicológico de los personajes y el estilo directo y objetivo de la narración. En 1839 publicó La cartuja de Parma, mucho más novelesca que Rojo y negro, que escribió en tan sólo dos meses y que por su espontaneidad constituye una confesión poética extraordinariamente sincera, aunque sólo recibió el elogio de Balzac. Ambas son novelas de aprendizaje, y participan de rasgos románticos y realistas; en ellas aparece un nuevo tipo de héroe, típicamente moderno, caracterizado por su aislamiento de la sociedad y su enfrentamiento con sus convenciones e ideales, en el que muy posiblemente se refleja en parte la personalidad del propio Stendhal. Falleció de un ataque de apoplejía, sin concluir su última obra, Lamiel, que fue publicada mucho después de su óbito. -

How historically accurate can a novel be?

"Capter la voix de l'auteur, tel est le défi que je me suis imposé. La voix de Stendhal est présente tout au long du roman. Et nous sommes au royaume de la subtilité. Une voix comme un fil électrique rattaché aux Lumières du XVIIIème siècle, légèreté et enthousiasme. Stendhal est amoureux de Mozart, de Cimarosa: « Les jours de bonheur, vous préférerez Cimarosa. Dans les moments de tristesse, Mozart aura l'avantage. » Stendhal est amoureux de la fougue, de l'énergie, de l'imprévu. « Il s'agit de ne pas bâiller d'ennui. » Des émotions vives, l'ardeur, le courage. Il écrit par exemple : « Le caractère des Français est gai, brave, moqueur, insouciant. » Stendhal est le prince de la nuance, de la complexité. Et il n'oublie jamais « la vérité, l'âpre vérité ».
C'est pourquoi “Le Rouge et le Noir” est aussi un grand roman politique. Aucune aigreur, aucun ressentiment, ses pensées intérieures sont sans acrimonie. Ce qui est le grand art. Le grand art justement de l'esprit des Lumières. Et ce qui est ravissant, ce sont toutes les voix intérieures de tous les personnages, les monologues secrets, l'invention de l'intime en soi, ce qui s'appelle penser par soi-même au fur et à mesure que se déroule l'action.
« L'intime du cerveau » comme l'écrivait Baudelaire à propos de Delacroix : « Il donne à voir l'intime du cerveau, une intense méditation. » Stendhal a inventé cette intimité du cerveau dans le roman. C'est pourquoi ces voix intérieures qui courent dans “Le Rouge et le Noir”, ont été comme des fugues, des intermèdes presque chuchotés, quelque chose d'inouï pour attraper le rythme, la musique de ce roman."

(Marie Henri Beyle; Grenoble, Francia, 1783-París, 1842) Novelista francés. Huérfano de madre desde 1789, se crió entre su padre y su tía. Rechazó las virtudes monárquicas y religiosas que le inculcaron y expresó pronto la voluntad de huir de su ciudad natal. Abiertamente republicano, acogió con entusiasmo la ejecución del rey y celebró incluso el breve arresto de su padre. A partir de 1796 fue alumno de la Escuela central de Grenoble y en 1799 logró el primer premio de matemáticas. Viajó a París para ingresar en la Escuela Politécnica, pero enfermó y no se pudo presentar a la prueba de acceso.
Gracias a Pierre Daru, un pariente lejano que se convertiría en su protector, entró a trabajar en el ministerio de Guerra. Enviado por el ejército como ayudante del general Michaud, en 1800 descubrió Italia, país que tomó como su patria de elección. Desengañado por la vida militar, abandonó el ejército en 1801. Entre los salones y teatros parisienses, siempre enamorado de una mujer diferente, empezó (sin éxito) a cultivar ambiciones literarias.
En precaria situación económica, Daru le consiguió un nuevo puesto como intendente militar en Brunswick, destino en que permaneció entre 1806 y 1808. Admirador incondicional de Napoleón, ejerció diversos cargos oficiales y participó en las campañas imperiales. En 1814, a la caída del corso, se exilió en Italia, fijó su residencia en Milán y efectuó varios viajes por la península italiana.
Publicó sus primeros libros de crítica de arte bajo el seudónimo de L. A. C. Bombet, y en 1817 apareció Roma, Nápoles y Florencia, un ensayo más original, donde mezcla la crítica con recuerdos personales, en el que utilizó por primera vez el seudónimo de Stendhal. El gobierno austriaco le acusó de apoyar el movimiento independentista italiano, por lo que abandonó Milán en 1821, pasó por Londres y se instaló de nuevo en París, cuando terminó la persecución de los partidarios de Napoleón.
Dandy afamado, frecuentaba los salones de manera asidua, mientras sobrevivía con los ingresos que le procuraban sus colaboraciones en algunas revistas literarias inglesas. En 1822 publicó Sobre el amor, ensayo basado en buena parte en sus propias experiencias y en el que expresaba ideas bastante avanzadas; destaca su teoría de la «cristalización», proceso por el que el espíritu, adaptando la realidad a sus deseos, cubre de perfecciones el objeto del deseo.
Asentó su renombre de escritor gracias a la Vida de Rossini y las dos partes de su Racine y Shakespeare, auténtico manifiesto del romanticismo. Después de una relación sentimental con la actriz Clémentine Curial, que duró hasta 1826, emprendió nuevos viajes al Reino Unido e Italia y redactó su primera novela, Armancia. En 1828, sin dinero ni éxito literario, solicitó un puesto en la Biblioteca Real, que no le fue concedido; hundido en una pésima situación económica, la muerte del conde Daru, al año siguiente, le afectó particularmente. Superó este período difícil gracias a los cargos de cónsul que obtuvo primero en Trieste y más tarde en Civitavecchia, mientras se entregaba sin reservas a la literatura.
En 1830 apareció su primera obra maestra: Rojo y negro, una crónica analítica de la sociedad francesa en la Restauración, en la que Stendhal representó las ambiciones de su época y las contradicciones de la emergente sociedad de clases, destacando sobre todo el análisis psicológico de los personajes y el estilo directo y objetivo de la narración.
En 1839 publicó La cartuja de Parma, mucho más novelesca que Rojo y negro, que escribió en tan sólo dos meses y que por su espontaneidad constituye una confesión poética extraordinariamente sincera, aunque sólo recibió el elogio de Balzac. Ambas son novelas de aprendizaje, y participan de rasgos románticos y realistas; en ellas aparece un nuevo tipo de héroe, típicamente moderno, caracterizado por su aislamiento de la sociedad y su enfrentamiento con sus convenciones e ideales, en el que muy posiblemente se refleja en parte la personalidad del propio Stendhal. Falleció de un ataque de apoplejía, sin concluir su última obra, Lamiel, que fue publicada mucho después de su óbito.
