Denis Villeneuve (French: [dəni vilnœv]; born October 3, 1967) is a Canadian film director and writer. He is a three-time winner of the Genie Award for Best Director, for Maelström in 2001, Polytechnique in 2010 and Incendies in 2011. All three films also won the Best Picture award. Internationally, he is best known for his crime-thrillers Prisoners and Sicario.
Villeneuve was born in Gentilly near Trois-Rivières, Quebec.
Villeneuve began his career making short films and won the Radio-Canada's youth film competition La Course Europe-Asie in 1990–91.
Villeneuve first caught attention for his 2001 film Maelström which screened at festivals worldwide and won dozens of awards, including 8 Jutra awards and 'Best Canadian Film' from the Toronto International Film Festival. He followed that up with the controversial, but critically acclaimed film Polytechnique (2009) about the shootings that occurred at the Montreal university.
Villeneuve's career exploded further with his film Incendies (2010) which received critical acclaim after it premiered at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals in 2010. Incendies was subsequently chosen to represent Canada at the 83rd Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film and was eventually nominated for the award. In January 2011 he was selected as one of the top ten filmmakers to watch. The film went on to win eight awards at the 31st Genie Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Lubna Azabal), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Overall Sound and Sound Editing.

If you want to see one of the best films of 2015, I suggest going to your local theater to watch director Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario. Loaded with great performances, a fantastic script, and tremendous cinematography by Roger Deakins, it’s one of those rare films where everything works perfectly and you walk out remembering why you love cinema. While at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival I landed an extended video interview with Denis Villeneuve. He talked about making Sicario on a limited budget, the editing process, why he hates putting deleted scenes on Blu-rays, and cutting the best shot of his life from Prisoners and making Roger Deakins mad. He also talked extensively about Blade Runner 2, which he will direct. He discussed its script, the various cuts of the first movie...

Denis Villeneuve burst into the international film world with his Oscar nominated Incendies in 2010. Since then, he has delivered Prisoners, Enemy, and now Sicario, with the sequel to Blade Runner due to shoot in Summer 2016. It's been a remarkable and intense run. The filmmaker spoke to David Poland about Sicario, the already heavy prep on Blade Runner, and more. Shot in Los Angeles, November 2015 Subscribe to DP/30 for more interviews: http://bit.ly/17Xg4Y1

It’s hard enough for a director to make one piece of landmark cinema in a specific genre, let alone two. But that’s what Ridley Scott did with Alien and Blade Runner, both of which are now considered bona fide classics. Scott finally got to make a sequel (of sorts) to the former with Prometheus a few years ago, and around the same time the filmmaker also announced that he had a desire to make a Blade Runner sequel as well, with screenwriter Hampton Fancher returning to pen the screenplay. Development on the sci-fi follow-up continued in the background for a few years, until it was announced that Scott was no longer planning on directing the film—though he found an incredibly talented filmmaker to sign on in his stead: Denis Villeneuve. Between Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, and now the impe...

Director Denis Villeneuve talks with Gold Derby editor Daniel Montgomery about making the mystery thriller "Prisoners," casting Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, working with cinematographer Roger Deakins, and his perspective on awards after earning an Foreign Film Oscar nod for "Incendies."

Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve discuss their gripping new thriller, Prisoners. When his six year old daughter and her friend go missing, Keller Dover (Jackman) takes matters into his own hands as Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) pursues multiple leads and the search gets more desperate. Facing every parent's nightmare, Dover goes to extreme lengths to protect his family.
MUST SEE FILMS explores Denis Villeneuve’s detective thriller ‘Prisoners.’ This Film Analysis digs into the overarching theme of the film ‘the testing of faith’ during a tragic kidnapping of a families children. Hugh Jackman gives one of his most emotional performances since The Fountain. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Detective Loki is my favourite character in the film and his relationship with Keller creates incredible tension and suspense. Prisoners gave me one of the most intense cinema going experiences and I knew I had witnessed something amazing. I was so pleased when researching the film how much meaning and intentional information is layered throughout this film. Going to show how talented and confident Denis Villeneuve is as a director. I hope you enjoy this video essay and feel free to comm...
