In an unusual visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban launched a sharp attack on MEPs after they criticized the state of democracy in Hungary.
Orban strongly defended his government's record as the Parliament presented a report calling Budapest to remove constitutional changes that some claim limit democracy and basic rights in Hungary.
He called the report 'politically motivated' and a 'threat to Europe'.
'The report is very unfair vis-a-vis Hungary, very unfair vis-a-vis the people of Hungary. You are applying double standards in this report, there's no recognition of certain enormous efforts that have been deployed in Hungary in order to help modernize the country. This is simply forgotten, denied', said Hungary's prime Minister Viktor Orban.
'The report that is tabled before you today is a serous danger, a threat for Europe (...) You're suggesting here setting up a mechanism, an institution which is not anchored in the treaties and it would mean that member states of the union could find themselves under guardian ship in the future', said Hungary's prime Minister Viktor Orban.
MEPs are due to vote over the report's statements on Wednesday.
Orban's government has carried out constitutional changes in recent months, including tough laws on education, homelessness and election funding.
If Hungary fails to comply, a formal investigation as to whether the EU's fundamental rights have been breached will be launched.
'No, Mr. ORBAN! It's not against Hungary! You have not the right to say that these people here are fighting against the Hungarian interests! It's the opposite, it's true! It's not your interest, but your interest is not the Hungarian interest! What we are defending here is Hungarian democracy and the interest of the Hungarian citizens', said ALDE's leader Guy Verhofstadt.
'Let me assure this house that the Commission, as guardian of the treaties will continue to ensure that legislation and, in the Hungarian case, the fundamental law of the state is made compatible with EU law where necessary. We have showed all our diligence, as we did it last year, when we launched two infringement cases against Hungary', said EC president Jose Manuel Barroso.
In 2011, Hungary adopted a new Constitution without much debated, raising concerns that the changes were contrary to EU norms and aimed at strengthening the Fidesz one-party rule.

Viktor Orbán
Viktor Orbán (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈorbaːn ˈviktor]; born 31 May 1963) is a Hungarian jurist and politician who has been Prime Minister of Hungary since 2010 and the president of the national conservative ruling party Fidesz from 1993 to 2000 and since 2003. Previously he also served as Prime Minister from 1998 to 2002.
Having earned a law degree, Orbán entered politics in the wake of the Revolutions of 1989 as a key figure of the radical student movement. He became a nationally known politician after his powerful speech at the reburial of Imre Nagy and other '56 martyrs on 16 June 1989. Following the transition to democracy in 1990, he was elected to the National Assembly for the first time and functioned as leader of his party's parliamentary caucus until 1994. Under his party leadership, Fidesz gradually transformed itself from a "radical liberal force" into a center-right people's party by 1994. Fidesz gained power at first in 1998, with electing Orbán as Prime Minister, who governed Hungary in a right-wing coalition government. During his appointment, he became the country's second youngest premier ever. Orbán narrowly lost the 2002 national election to the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), and became Leader of the Opposition. The Fidesz lost the 2006 election too, despite two defeats in a row, Orbán was able to maintain the position of party president.

European Union
The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It covers an area of 4,324,782 km2, with an estimated population of over 508 million. The EU operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states. The institutions are: the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the Court of Auditors. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens.
The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade,agriculture,fisheries, and regional development. The monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002. It is currently composed of 19 member states that use the euro as their legal tender.

In an unusual visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban launched a sharp attack on MEPs after they criticized the state of democracy in Hungary.
Orban strongly defended his government's record as the Parliament presented a report calling Budapest to remove constitutional changes that some claim limit democracy and basic rights in Hungary.
He called the report 'politically motivated' and a 'threat to Europe'.
'The report is very unfair vis-a-vis Hungary, very unfair vis-a-vis the people of Hungary. You are applying double standards in this report, there's no recognition of certain enormous efforts that have been deployed in Hungary in order to help modernize the country. This is simply forgotten, denied', said Hungary's prime Minister Viktor Orban.
'The report that is tabled before you today is a serous danger, a threat for Europe (...) You're suggesting here setting up a mechanism, an institution which is not anchored in the treaties and it would mean that member states of the union could find themselves under guardian ship in the future', said Hungary's prime Minister Viktor Orban.
MEPs are due to vote over the report's statements on Wednesday.
Orban's government has carried out constitutional changes in recent months, including tough laws on education, homelessness and election funding.
If Hungary fails to comply, a formal investigation as to whether the EU's fundamental rights have been breached will be launched.
'No, Mr. ORBAN! It's not against Hungary! You have not the right to say that these people here are fighting against the Hungarian interests! It's the opposite, it's true! It's not your interest, but your interest is not the Hungarian interest! What we are defending here is Hungarian democracy and the interest of the Hungarian citizens', said ALDE's leader Guy Verhofstadt.
'Let me assure this house that the Commission, as guardian of the treaties will continue to ensure that legislation and, in the Hungarian case, the fundamental law of the state is made compatible with EU law where necessary. We have showed all our diligence, as we did it last year, when we launched two infringement cases against Hungary', said EC president Jose Manuel Barroso.
In 2011, Hungary adopted a new Constitution without much debated, raising concerns that the changes were contrary to EU norms and aimed at strengthening the Fidesz one-party rule.

To say that we have refugees all over Europe and they all want to go to Germany and therefore we are not concerned, is effective, but WRONG. And therefore I think we need a fair and just distribution. Let me be very concrete in figures: the European member states altogether, the 28 member states, have 507 million inhabitants. If we distribute 500,000 refugees amongst 507 million (inhabitants), it is not a problem. If you concentrate all the refugees to some of the member states, it is a problem.
And therefore European solidarity is key, and my appeal, I repeat it to the Prime Minister, is to contribute to such a European solution. (...)
What we are seeing for the time being is egoism instead of common European sense. Let's be honest, this is a crucial moment for the EU. If we will not facing that challenge, common solutions on the basis of an agreement of all Member States of the EU, the deeper split of the Union is a risk that cannot be ruled out. (...)

In einem Radio-Interview sagte er, Berlin habe sich mit der Entscheidung, die in Ungarn gestrandeten Migranten aufzunehmen, nicht an EU-Regeln gehalten. In Großbritannien herrsche der Eindruck, die Deutschen hätten den Verstand verloren.
"Man mag über Ungarn denken, was man will. Aber wenn Deutschland sich nicht an die Regeln hält, fällt die ganze EU auseinander", sagte Glees. Deutschland gebe sich im Moment als "Hippie-Staat, der nur von Gefühlen geleitet wird". Statt nur mit dem Herz, müsse man auch mit dem Hirn handeln, forderte der Politologe - so wie es auch der britische Premierminister David Cameron gefordert hatte.
Nach Glees' Worten gibt Deutschland Kennern des Landes im Moment Rätsel auf. Während Großbritannien sich in Syrien militärisch engagiere, um die Terrormiliz "Islamischer Staat" zu bekämpfen, halte sich Berlin heraus. Gleichzeitig sage die Bundesregierung dann aber den verzweifelten Menschen in Syrien und im Irak, sie sollten in die Bundesrepublik kommen. "Das scheint vielen Briten unsinnig. Viele meinen, die Deutschen hätten ihr Gehirn verloren." Er bedaure sehr, dass die Ereignisse der vergangenen Tage die Deutschen in Großbritannien "sehr unsympathisch" gemacht hätten.

Ungarn setzt in dem Bereich weiter - wie auch Australien - auf Abschreckung, denn die meisten sind Wirtschaftsmigranten. Es sei menschlich und moralisch nicht richtig, Flüchtlingen “falsche Hoffnungen” zu machen, sagte er in Brüssel.
