Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated as R&B or RnB, is a genre of popular African-American music that originated in the 1940s. The term was originally used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular. In the commercial rhythm and blues music typical of the 1950s through the 1970s, the bands usually consisted of piano, one or two guitars, bass, drums, saxophone, and sometimes background vocalists. R&B lyrical themes often encapsulate the African-American experience of pain and the quest for freedom and joy. Lyrics focus heavily on the themes of triumphs and failures in terms of relationships, freedom, economics, aspirations, and sex.
The term rhythm and blues has undergone a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s it was frequently applied to blues records. Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. In the 1960s, several British rock bands such as the Rolling Stones, The Who and The Animals were referred to and promoted as being RnB bands; posters for The Who's residency at the Marquee Club in 1964 contained the slogan "The Who - Maximum RnB". This tangent of RnB is now known as "British rhythm and blues". By the 1970s, the term rhythm and blues changed again and was used as a blanket term for soul and funk. In the 1980s, a newer style of R&B developed, becoming known as "Contemporary R&B". It combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance. Popular R&B vocalists at the end of the 20th century included Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder,Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.
Beat or beats may refer to:
An instrumental is a musical composition or recording without lyrics, or singing, although it might include some inarticulate vocal input; the music is primarily or exclusively produced by musical instruments.
In a song that is otherwise sung, a section not sung but played with instruments can be called an instrumental interlude. If the instruments are percussion instruments, the interlude can be called a percussion interlude. These interludes are a form of break in the song.
In commercial popular music, instrumental tracks are sometimes renderings of a corresponding release that features vocals, but they may also be compositions originally conceived without vocals. An instrumental version of a song which otherwise features vocals is also known as a -1 (pronounced minus one).
The opposite of instrumental music is a cappella.
For genres in which a non-vocal song or interlude is conceived using electronic media, rather than with true musical instruments, the term instrumental is nonetheless used for it.
Hip hop or hip-hop is a sub-cultural movement that formed during the early 1970s by African-American and Puerto Rican youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City. It became popular outside of the African-American community in the late 1980s and by the 2000s became the most listened-to musical genre in the world. It is characterized by four distinct elements, all of which represent the different manifestations of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or DJing (aural), b-boying (physical) and graffiti art (visual). Even while it continues to develop globally in myriad styles, these four foundational elements provide coherence to hip hop culture. The term is often used in a restrictive fashion as synonymous only with the oral practice of rap music.
The origin of the hip hop culture stems from the block parties of the Ghetto Brothers, when they plugged in the amplifiers for their instruments and speakers into the lampposts on 163rd Street and Prospect Avenue and used music to break down racial barriers, and from DJ Kool Herc at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, where Herc mixed samples of existing records with his own shouts to the crowd and dancers. Kool Herc is credited as the "father" of hip hop. DJ Afrika Bambaataa of the hip hop collective Zulu Nation outlined the pillars of hip hop culture, to which he coined the terms: MCing or "Emceein", DJing or "Deejayin", B-boying and graffiti writing or "Aerosol Writin".
Contemporary R&B, also known as simply R&B, is a music genre that combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance.
Contemporary R&B has a polished record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, an occasional saxophone-laced beat to give a jazz feel (mostly common in contemporary R&B songs prior to the year 1995) and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement. Electronic influences are becoming an increasing trend and the use of hip hop or dance-inspired beats are typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop may be reduced and smoothed out. Contemporary R&B vocalists are often known for their use of melisma, popularized by vocalists such as Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder,Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.
Contemporary R&B originated at the end of the disco era, in the late 1970s, when Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones added more electronics elements to the black music sound of the time to create a smoother dancefloor-friendly sound. The first result was Off the Wall (1979), that according to Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic, "was a visionary album, that found a way to break disco wide open into a new world where the beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus -- it was part of a colorful tapestry of lush ballads and strings, smooth soul and pop, soft rock, and alluring funk".

[redneck]

[redneck]
[coughing] That sweet's killer, man
I'm high 'like an eagle', and like the Steve Miller Band
I'm a smoker, a midnight toker
Get the Adidas box top under the sofa with the joker
Then let's roll a big old fat
Square like this here, smell like a ( ? )
[Devin]
Man, I bet yo weed ain't better than mine
[redneck]
Oh, that's bullshit
[Devin]
Take heed of my weed, man, all you need is a little bit
Now don't kill it
[redneck]
Hell man, I took a couple of pulls
Here, take two of my Budweisers, give me two of your Bulls
[Devin]
Man, I'ma give you two of these balls if you don't get your muthafuckin ass...

You need a hook or somethin
[Devin]
Man, you don't even listen to rap music
[redneck]
Hell yeah I do!
[Devin]
Aight fuck it, come on, follow through with the hook then
[redneck]

[Devin]

[redneck]
Reefer and beer
[Devin]
Put some soul in it, make it like...
Reefer and beer
[redneck]
Reefer and beer
[Devin]
High, yes I am
Smokin this weed again
I had one sweet left, I broke it down and rolled two
And sold them hoes and scored a three for ten
I spend my cash and time on grass and wine
You ask for my opinion, I say it don't make
A lot of hoes hope you choke and stay broke
Or smoke coke but nope, I bend but won't break
I made major mistakes but hey, they're all mine
You gotta learn how to get up when you fall down
Lived in a small town throwin rocks at cows in a field of dreams
Hopin it will amount to just more than a hell of beans
I feel the need for beer and weed
[redneck]
Why don't you smoke some here with me?
And we can ride through the ghettos and trailer parks
We can drink and spark until it gets dark
[Devin]
I wake up in the mornin and I roll me a square
Sweet or whatever, I put that hoe in the air
[inhales] Hit that muthafucka couple of times
Sit back and recline and try to relax my mind
With some
[Devin]
Reefer and beer
Reefer and beer
Reefer and beer
Reefer and beer
[Devin]
It's a brand new you, I guess it's time to start anew
Time to get our shit together, think about things we gotta do
Stay close to all our family, keep in touch with all our friends
Last year was kinda shaky, it's time for makin some ends
Take care of our kids and then
Go and get some
[Devin]
Reefer and beer
Reefer and beer
Reefer and beer
Yeah
Reefer and beer
Yeah
[Devin]
Yeah man, that shit was aight, man!

[redneck]
Right over our first track
[Devin]
