Set in the Atlantic Ocean, midway between North America and Europe, nine Portuguese islands make up the Azores archipelago with a volcanic connection that makes them among the most beautiful in the world. Discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese navigators on their way to the new world they are still relatively unspoiled. We visit San Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Pico where our explorations reveal the beauty of the islands' wild flowers, farmlands enclosed by stone hedges and hydrangeas, and a variety of volcanoes from young cones to collapsed craters and old chimneys. The exquisite baroque and colonial architecture of churches, town halls and city squares reflects a golden age of history when the islands were a vital link in important trading routes that crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Ben Fogle travels to The Azores to explore the islands and takes on different challenges in each. On Faial he hikes along trails on a lunar landscape as well as along crater rims and finds out how volcanos have changes the island and the lives of its people. In the harbour town of Horta Ben displays his artistic abilities to leave his own landmark before a ferry ride to Pico where he climbs the highest mountain in Portugal to enjoy breathtaking views. On the island he also visits the vineyards growing among the lava stones and the underground lava tunnels. The island of St Jorges is ideal for more extreme adventure and here Ben's skills in coasteering, canyoning and abseiling along this rugged terrain are tested. Finally, Ben travels to the largest island, San Miguel and to the historic centre of Ponta Delgada to discover the island's rich heritage and culture. He travels to the most popular attraction on the island, Furnas and its spectacular geological feature of bubbling water and steaming vents and it's here where he cooks his own geo-thermal meal. Closeby, he takes a dip in the thermal lake which is renowned for its healing properties. The Lakes of Sete Cidades are examples of the dramatic scenery which form the backdrop to his journey and especially while he kayaks in one of the crater lakes and jumps onto a mountain bike to seek adventure further afield.

The Azores islands are located between America and Europe and set amid the Atlantic Ocean, nine islands each with its own special landscape. São Miguel is Gateway to the Azores and the largest and most densely populated island of the Azores archipelago with steaming geysers, the opulent green of the tropics as well as numerous monasteries and settlements. Terceira is located in the middle of the archipelago. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its natural harbour was an important port of call for numerous trading ships and Pacos Do Concelho, City Hall, indicates the city’s former prosperity. To the east of the island of Terceira is Serra Do Cume, a giant crater about ten kilometres wide. The interior of the crater consists of fields and pastures in which dairy cows graze peacefully. São Sebastião is probably the oldest settlement on the island and was where the first Portuguese settlers set foot ashore. Threatened by pirate attack, the people built fortified churches, decorated in Gothic splendour. Faial, the Blue Island, is one of the most visited islands in the archipelago and whose marina is well known throughout the world. It offers spectacular nature with a rocky coastline and volcanoes. Horta is the island’s capital and since 1976 has also been the seat of the Azores’ parliament. With their authentic nature and harmony, the Azores islands are still waiting to be discovered. A paradise set in eternal blue with islands that hold the secrets of nature and an abundance of local pride. Evergreen jewels set amid the Atlantic Ocean!

The Azores (UK /əˈzɔːrz/ ə-ZORZ, US /ˈeɪzɔːrz/ AY-zorz; Portuguese: Açores, [ɐˈsoɾɨʃ]), officially the Autonomous Region of the Azores (Região Autónoma dos Açores), is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal, composed of nine volcanic islands situated in the North Atlantic Ocean about 1,360 km (850 mi) west of continental Portugal, about 880 km (550 mi) northwest of Madeira, about 1,925 km (1,196 mi) southeast of Newfoundland, and about 6,392 km (3,972 mi) northeast of Brazil. Its main industries are agriculture, dairy farming (for cheese and butter products primarily), livestock ranching, fishing, and tourism, which is becoming the major service activity in the region. In addition to this, the government of the Azores employs a large percentage of the population directly or indirectly in many aspects of the service and tertiary sectors. The main settlement of the Azores is Ponta Delgada.
There are nine major Azorean islands and an islet cluster, in three main groups. These are Flores and Corvo, to the west; Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial in the centre; and São Miguel, Santa Maria, and the Formigas Reef to the east. They extend for more than 600 km (370 mi) and lie in a northwest-southeast direction.

On Faial he hikes along trails on a lunar landscape as well as along crater rims and finds out how volcanos have changes the island and the lives of its people. In the harbour town of Horta Ben displays his artistic abilities to leave his own landmark before a ferry ride to Pico where he climbs the highest mountain in Portugal to enjoy breathtaking views. On the island he also visits the vineyards growing among the lava stones and the underground lava tunnels. The island of St Jorges is ideal for more extreme adventure and here Ben's skills in coasteering, canyoning and abseiling along this rugged terrain are tested. Finally, Ben travels to the largest island, San Miguel and to the historic centre of Ponta Delgada to discover the island's rich heritage and culture. He travels to the most popular attraction on the island, Furnas and its spectacular geological feature of bubbling water and steaming vents and it's here where he cooks his own geo-thermal meal. Closeby, he takes a dip in the thermal lake which is renowned for its healing properties. The Lakes of Sete Cidades are examples of the dramatic scenery which form the backdrop to his journey and especially while he kayaks in one of the crater lakes and jumps onto a mountain bike to seek adventure further afield.

Terceira is located in the middle of the archipelago. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its natural harbour was an important port of call for numerous trading ships and Pacos Do Concelho, City Hall, indicates the city’s former prosperity. To the east of the island of Terceira is Serra Do Cume, a giant crater about ten kilometres wide. The interior of the crater consists of fields and pastures in which dairy cows graze peacefully. São Sebastião is probably the oldest settlement on the island and was where the first Portuguese settlers set foot ashore. Threatened by pirate attack, the people built fortified churches, decorated in Gothic splendour. Faial, the Blue Island, is one of the most visited islands in the archipelago and whose marina is well known throughout the world. It offers spectacular nature with a rocky coastline and volcanoes. Horta is the island’s capital and since 1976 has also been the seat of the Azores’ parliament. With their authentic nature and harmony, the Azores islands are still waiting to be discovered. A paradise set in eternal blue with islands that hold the secrets of nature and an abundance of local pride. Evergreen jewels set amid the Atlantic Ocean!

The Azores islands are located between America and Europe and set amid the Atlantic Ocean, nine islands each with its own special landscape. São Miguel is Gateway to the Azores and the largest and most densely populated island of the Azores archipelago with steaming geysers, the opulent green of the tropics as well as numerous monasteries and settlements. Terceira is located in the middle of the archipelago. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its natural harbour was an important port of call for numerous trading ships and Pacos Do Concelho, City Hall, indicates the city’s former prosperity. To the east of the island of Terceira is Serra Do Cume, a giant crater about ten kilometres wide. The interior of the crater consists of fields and pastures in which dairy cows graze peacefully. São Sebastião is probably the oldest settlement on the island and was where the first Portuguese settlers set foot ashore. Threatened by pirate attack, the people built fortified churches, decorated in Gothic splendour. Faial, the Blue Island, is one of the most visited islands in the archipelago and whose marina is well known throughout the world. It offers spectacular nature with a rocky coastline and volcanoes. Horta is the island’s capital and since 1976 has also been the seat of the Azores’ parliament. With their authentic nature and harmony, the Azores islands are still waiting to be discovered. A paradise set in eternal blue with islands that hold the secrets of nature and an abundance of local pride. Evergreen jewels set amid the Atlantic Ocean!

The Matriz De São Salvador Church was built by the Jesuits until, in 1759, the Order was banned by the Portuguese. Gilded carvings adorn both the main and side altars and numerous figures represent scenes from the life of Ignatius Von Loyola, founder of the Order. With their authentic nature and harmony, the Azores islands are still waiting to be discovered. Islands that hold the secrets of nature and an abundance of local pride. These are Flores and Corvo, to the west; Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial in the centre; and São Miguel, Santa Maria, and the Formigas Reef to the east. They extend for more than 600 km (370 mi) and lie in a northwest-southeast direction.
All the islands have volcanic origins, although some, such as Santa Maria, have had no recorded activity since the islands were settled. Mount Pico, on the island of Pico, is the highest point in Portugal, at 2,351 m (7,713 ft). The Azores are actually some of the tallest mountains on the planet, measured from their base at the bottom of the ocean to their peaks, which thrust high above the surface of the Atlantic.
Because these once-uninhabited and remote islands were settled sporadically over a span of two centuries, their culture, dialect, cuisine, and traditions vary considerably.

Ben Fogle traveled to the Azores, an archipelago of nine islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and a popular cruise destination. He visits the largest of the islands, São Miguel where he strolls around the centre of Ponta Delgada, enjoys his first thermal meal in Furnas, followed by a dip in a thermal pool at Terra Nostra Park. Discovering the island, he shares his thoughts on the dramatic scenery and views over Lake Fogal and the Lakes of Sete Cidades. Ben then moves on o the island of Faial which is characterized by volcanoes and lunar landscapes and enjoys Azorean hospitality and cultural traditions in Horta, the main town on the island. Ben Fogle ends his visit to the Azores in Pico with its lava stone vineyards and home to the largest mountain in Portugal.
