Police have established a crime scene at a home in Kewdale amid reports it could be linked to the Claremont serial killer investigation.

There are reports a man has been taken into custody.

According to the ABC police are "believed to be interviewing him in connection with the historic Claremont serial killer investigation."

The ABC reports police officers went to the house at 7am on Thursday and that a man aged in his 50s was taken into custody.

Seven News reported police were focusing on the back yard of the home.

Neighbours told Seven News they heard screaming when police arrived at the scene, but police have so far declined to comment on the development.

Jane Rimmer, Sarah Spiers and Ciara Glennon vanished in Claremont in 1996 and 1997.

Sarah Spiers was never found.

Jane Rimmer's body was found in bushland south of Perth in 1996. Ciara Glennon's body was found north of Perth in 1997.

Nobody has ever been charged in connection to the case, codenamed Operation Macro.

Channel 10 journalist Rebecca Munro told 6PR on Thursday night that the Kewdale raid was indeed connected to the Macro inquiry.

"This is a huge case," she said.

"We've had it confirmed by a number of different sources that it is in fact linked to the Macro taskforce.

"Someone was taken away from that house.

"Moments ago we just saw a bunch of evidence come out of the house."

Ten Eyewitness News reporter Caty Price claims Ciara Glennon's family had been called by police to inform them there had been a breakthrough in what is one of Australia's most high profile cold cases.
