Retail therapy: Plant by Packwood

Show comments

Melbourne's love affair with terrariums keeps growing. Just ask Bayden Hine and Charlotte Nicdao.

The couple started their business, Plant by Packwood, 2½ years ago, selling these little self-sufficient landscapes – no watering required – at market stalls. It was going so well they both quit their day jobs within a few months.

After settling at Fitzroy's Rose Street Artists' Market, their first permanent shop front has sprouted into life. You can't see it from the street but pop your head through the market gates and there stands a little oasis in the middle of the concrete.

Designed by Collingwood-based Love Design Initiative, the shop is like a walk-in greenhouse. It's a seven metre by three metre space made of polycarbonate – as see-through as the terrariums it houses.

You can buy Hines' hand-crafted terrariums off the shelf or get one custom made while you sip a beverage next door at Young Bloods Diner. You can also bring your own glassware to get one made up, or stay tuned for in-store workshops and make your own.

The store also sells a range of exotic and lush indoor plants, ceramics from local potters Yesha MacDonald and Karlee Sangster, and hangers from macrame queen The Middle Aisle.

With all that glass and fancy rockery, terrariums can end up being very expensive but prices here are reasonable, starting at as little as $10 for a "mossarium", which fits in the palm of your hand.
