The United States Census Bureau (USCB; officially the Bureau of the Census, as defined in Title 13 U.S.C. § 11) is a principal agency of the U.S. Federal Statistical System responsible for producing data about the American people and economy.
The primary mission of the Census Bureau is conducting the U.S. Census every ten years, which allocates the seats of the U.S. House of Representatives to the states based on their population. In addition to the decennial census, the Census Bureau continually conducts dozens of other censuses and surveys, including the American Community Survey, the U.S. Economic Census, and the Current Population Survey. Furthermore, economic and foreign trade indicators released by the federal government typically contain data produced by the Census Bureau. The various censuses and surveys conducted by the Census Bureau help allocate over $400 billion in federal funds every year and help states, local communities, and businesses make informed decisions.
A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population. It is a regularly occurring and official count of a particular population. The term is used mostly in connection with national population and housing censuses; other common censuses include agriculture, business, and traffic censuses. The United Nations defines the essential features of population and housing censuses as "individual enumeration, universality within a defined territory, simultaneity and defined periodicity", and recommends that population censuses be taken at least every 10 years. United Nations recommendations also cover census topics to be collected, official definitions, classifications and other useful information to co-ordinate international practice.
The word is of Latin origin: during the Roman Republic, the census was a list that kept track of all adult males fit for military service. The modern census is essential to international comparisons of any kind of statistics, and censuses collect data on many attributes of a population, not just how many people there are but now census takes its place within a system of surveys where it typically began as the only national demographic data collection. Although population estimates remain an important function of a census, including exactly the geographic distribution of the population, statistics can be produced about combinations of attributes e.g. education by age and sex in different regions. Current administrative data systems allow for other approaches to enumeration with the same level of detail but raise concerns about privacy and the possibility of biasing estimates.

The federal government says the census website was not attacked or hacked and no data was lost. "This was not an attack, nor was it a hack but rather, it was an attempt to frustrate the collection of Bureau of Statistics census data" - Minister Michael McCormack. Latest: http://yhoo.it/2bdXrtH "The attack was no more significant than the types of attacks we would see all the time against Australian government systems. It's just that there was a confluence of events" - Government cyber security adviser Alastair MacGibbon. Most of the traffic was coming from the United States but that was not unusual for denial of service attacks. Census Statement: "We apologise for the inconvenience. The 2016 online Census form was subject to four Denial of Service attacks of varying nature & severity....
THESE JUST KEEP GETTING LONGER! Sorry this took so long to get up, but glad I did it before the baby happened. Thanks to everyone who participated! I was pretty burnt out by the time I finished this, so I'll say one more thing. Yes, this community is changing and maybe there are fewer uber-engaged, active Nerdfighters than there once were. But that is not something that upsets me. Communities might even get more interesting as they get smaller. I'm so pleased to continue being a part of this with such a fantastic community, especially as people begin new stages of their lives. Looking forward to next year already!
I take back the twaddle about statutes and acts and what a crime is.The initiation of force is immoral which ever way you slice it. I will not be threatened by a government I have employed to serve and protect me.
The very act of filling out a Census Bureau form is a violation of your Fifth Amendment rights, by the way. Providing this bureau with your race / ancestry information gives them information that may be used to round you up at gunpoint and have you (and your family) sent to a concentration camp. That's not conjecture. It's not a conspiracy theory. It's historical fact. The U.S. Census Bureau did, in fact, conspire with the federal government to target American citizens based on race data. • Over 100,000 Japanese-American citizens were rounded up at gunpoint, kidnapped by the government, and forcibly relocated to these concentration camps. They were forced to abandon their homes, farms and businesses. • This rounding up of Japanese-American citizens was "authorized" by President Franklin...
Uninformed Census Workers who want to post "We don't ask those questions" will be omitted from comments. You have not done your homework. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND the difference between the short and long forms watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFvS5m4_OtA "The Census Part 2, Clarifications" Many people seem to miss the fact that there is a longer, more invasive form called the "American Community Survey". It is given to 3 million people by the Census Bureau EVERY YEAR. Comments like "I just filled out my form and it didn't have any of the questions you mentioned" are generally withheld from posting. Comments will only appear after approval to keep the page civil, intelligent and relevant. If you want the straight scoop, a great online resource of all kinds inform...

Census error, web site not loading and shut down. Was it Chinese hackers? An estimated 16 million people logged on to the Australian Census website on Tuesday night, they were met with error messages and told the system was "overloaded" before the website crashed. abs.gov.au is DOWN for everyone! Welcome to the Australian Census to be done online August 9 2016. If you don't complete your Census form hefty fines apply. This year sees much more personal information being required. Not sure why they need your name but I'm not that keen on internet security to let all that info become fodder for Russian or Chinese hackers. The ABS have already proved to me they can't support a website that's stable online. Hopefully the lesson learned here is never try this again, go back to paper forms as see...
The .370 Census March 25, 2016
corner gas census sensibility. corner gas census sensibility.
It's everything you thought they'd like
Just a wake of strangled stars and stripes
You're a paper head on a back bone of fire
Always asleep but never tired
Such a social heart
You can wrap it up
It takes too much to hide
In your afterlife
We watch the crashing sky till three
On the radio they found your keys
So super dazed by what you carry
And free as trees, bright and buried
You can't think straight
You can't think straight
Such a social heart
You can wrap it up
It takes too much to hide
