One third of all the food produced in the world goes to waste. And in the UK, 44 per cent of all the bread we bake gets thrown away. What if drinking craft beer could be part of the solution to food waste? Rob Wilson will tell you about his mission to make that dream a reality.
Rob is an award winning social entrepreneur and Chief Toaster at Toast Ale. He believes that if you want to change the world, you have to throw a better party than those destroying it. Prior to Toast, Rob led Ashoka in the UK, supporting a global network of social entrepreneurs. He founded READ International which has provided over 1.5 million books to Tanzanian children and created 100 school libraries. He co-founded Generation Change, a partnership of leading UK youth social action organisations, and Undivided, a non- partisan campaign lobbying for the best possible Brexit deal for young people.

Today (Nov 20th) I did my first ever college speech/lectures doing 3 in one day at Exeter College, Devon, UK. This was the last lecture of the day to their philosophy and religious studies classes.
The speech was based around the ethics of eating animals, the impact of animal agriculture on the environment and how we can make a change.

1. Beijing has been forced to deny it is shipping canned human meat to stores across Africa after an online hoax showing a human body at a butcher shop went viral.

We wondered, before going to the expense of building a steel wok like they use in Japan or at BlueSky or Zanjabil (estimated about $400 in costs to fabricate), what if we build a pit like Josiah Hunt but shape it like a cone kiln and use the type of layering technique that Michael Wittner demonstrated?
That was our experiment, which we are calling Cone Pit method. We dug a cone-shaped pit — 54" top diameter, 24" bottom diameter, and 16" deep. The burn began with a single match and some cardboard boxes, along with a few small, very dry bamboo sticks. Within a few minutes it had grown to fill the bottom of the pit and we quickly started adding more and bigger bamboo to the fire. We watched for signs of it going white -- indicating ash formation, and then we would throw on another layer of bamboo.
If we had more bamboo we could have probably made 10 times what we did, but we started with about 12 cubic feet of loosely piled dry bamboo and we used that in the course of the 12 minute burn. Then, with no more fuel, we started quenching at the edges and anywhere we saw white ash, and gradually worked the spray toward the center, ending the process after approximately 15 minutes. We quenched the fire thoroughly, left it out in the overnight rain, and then allowed it to drain into the ground for a full day before collecting and weighing what we had. It was 30 pounds dry weight (13.6 kg), about 7 gallons by volume.

Exeter
Exeter (
i/ˈɛksᵻtər/) is a cathedral city in Devon, England with a population of 124,328 (mid-2014 est.). It lies within the ceremonial county of Devon, of which it is the county town as well as the home of Devon County Council. Currently, the administrative area has the status of a non-metropolitan district and is therefore under the administration of the County Council (there was a plan to grant the city unitary authority status, although this was scrapped under the 2010 coalition government). The city is on the River Exe about 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Plymouth and 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Bristol.
Exeter was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, although there is evidence a Cornish tribe existed in Exeter before the Roman invasion. Exeter became a religious centre during the Middle Ages and into the Tudor times: Exeter Cathedral, founded in the mid 11th century, became Anglican during the 16th-century English Reformation. During the late 19th century, Exeter became an affluent centre for the wool trade, although by the First World War the city was in decline. After the Second World War, much of the city centre was rebuilt and is now considered to be a centre for modern business and tourism in Devon and Cornwall.

The Handmaid's Tale
The Handmaid's Tale (1985) is a dystopian novel, a work of speculative fiction, by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. Set in the near future, in a totalitarian Christian theocracy which has overthrown the United States government, The Handmaid's Tale explores themes of women in subjugation and the various means by which they gain agency. The novel's title was inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, which is a series of connected stories ("The Merchant's Tale", "The Parson's Tale", etc.)
The Handmaid's Tale won the 1985 Governor General's Award and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987; it was also nominated for the 1986 Nebula Award, the 1986 Booker Prize, and the 1987 Prometheus Award. It has been adapted for the cinema, radio, opera, and stage.
Plot summary
The Handmaid's Tale is set in the Republic of Gilead, a theocratic military dictatorship formed within the borders of what was formerly the United States of America.
Beginning with a staged terrorist attack (blamed on Islamic extremists) that kills the President and most of Congress, a movement calling itself the "Sons of Jacob" launches a revolution and suspends the United States Constitution under the pretext of restoring order. They are quickly able to take away all of women's rights, largely attributed to financial records being stored electronically and labelled by gender. The new regime, the Republic of Gilead, moves quickly to consolidate its power and reorganize society along a new militarized, hierarchical, compulsorily Christian regime of Old Testament-inspired social and religious fanaticism among its newly created social classes. In this society, almost all women are forbidden to read.

Ed Miliband
Edward Samuel Miliband (born 24 December 1969) is a British politician who was the Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition between 2010 and 2015. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Doncaster North since 2005 and served in the Cabinet from 2007 to 2010 under Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He and his brother, David Miliband, were the first siblings to sit in the Cabinet simultaneously since Edward and Oliver Stanley in 1938.
Born in London, Miliband graduated from Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford, and the London School of Economics, becoming first a television journalist, a Labour Party researcher and a visiting scholar at Harvard University before rising to become one of Chancellor Gordon Brown's confidants and Chairman of HM Treasury's Council of Economic Advisers.
Miliband was elected to Parliament in 2005, succeeding the retiring Labour MP Kevin Hughes in Doncaster North. Prime Minister Tony Blair made Miliband Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet Office in May 2006 and when Gordon Brown became Prime Minister in 2007, he appointed Miliband Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Miliband was subsequently promoted to the new post of Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, a position he held from 2008 to 2010.

Then, with no more fuel, we started quenching at the edges and anywhere we saw white ash, and gradually worked the spray toward the center, ending the process after approximately 15 minutes. We quenched the fire thoroughly, left it out in the overnight rain, and then allowed it to drain into the ground for a full day before collecting and weighing what we had. It was 30 pounds dry weight (13.6 kg), about 7 gallons by volume. Had to update the May 10 version of this with some missing credits so this is version 2. When we updated we lost 2 likes and 84 viewers from the view tally. -

Cone Pit Biochar in 15 minutes
We wondered, before going to the expense of building a steel wok like they use in Japan or at BlueSky or Zanjabil (estimated about $400 in costs to fabricate), what if we build a pit like Josiah Hunt but shape it like a cone kiln and use the type of layering technique that Michael Wittner demonstrated? That was our experiment, which we are calling Cone Pit method. We dug a cone-shaped pit — 54" top diameter, 24" bottom diameter, and 16" deep. The burn began with a single match and some cardboard boxes, along with a few small, very dry bamboo sticks. Within a few minutes it had grown to fill the bottom of the pit and we quickly started adding more and bigger bamboo to the fire. One third of all the food produced in the world goes to waste. And in the UK, 44 per cent of all the bread we bake gets thrown away. What if drinking craft beer could be part of the solution to food waste? Rob Wilson will tell you about his mission to make that dream a reality.
Rob is an award winning social entrepreneur and Chief Toaster at Toast Ale. He believes that if you want to change the world, you have to throw a better party than those destroying it. Prior to Toast, Rob led Ashoka in the UK, supporting a global network of social entrepreneurs. He founded READ International which has provided over 1.5 million books to Tanzanian children and created 100 school libraries. He co-founded Generation Change, a partnership of leading UK youth social action organisations, and Undivided, a non- partisan campaign lobbying for the best possible Brexit deal for young people.

5. Authorities in China confiscated about 800 tons of smuggled frozen meat, some of which dates back to the 1970s.

We wondered, before going to the expense of building a steel wok like they use in Japan or at BlueSky or Zanjabil (estimated about $400 in costs to fabricate), what if we build a pit like Josiah Hunt but shape it like a cone kiln and use the type of layering technique that Michael Wittner demonstrated?
That was our experiment, which we are calling Cone Pit method. We dug a cone-shaped pit — 54" top diameter, 24" bottom diameter, and 16" deep. The burn began with a single match and some cardboard boxes, along with a few small, very dry bamboo sticks. Within a few minutes it had grown to fill the bottom of the pit and we quickly started adding more and bigger bamboo to the fire. We watched for signs of it going white -- indicating ash formation, and then we would throw on another layer of bamboo.
If we had more bamboo we could have probably made 10 times what we did, but we started with about 12 cubic feet of loosely piled dry bamboo and we used that in the course of the 12 minute burn. Then, with no more fuel, we started quenching at the edges and anywhere we saw white ash, and gradually worked the spray toward the center, ending the process after approximately 15 minutes. We quenched the fire thoroughly, left it out in the overnight rain, and then allowed it to drain into the ground for a full day before collecting and weighing what we had. It was 30 pounds dry weight (13.6 kg), about 7 gallons by volume.
Had to update the May 10 version of this with some missing credits so this is version 2. When we updated we lost 2 likes and 84 viewers from the view tally.

Can you review my book?
I’m always happy to hear about upcoming books, but I’m afraid I don’t review self-published books and usually prefer to be contacted by the publisher rather than the author. I can only accept a small number of books for review, since I have a lot of books lined up already. I enjoy reading classics, dystopian/apocalyptic novels, sci-fi, translated fiction and a variety of graphic novels, YA and contemporary literary fiction. I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Literature at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and had lots of American friends, hence the weird accent. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise!

I'm a Social Media Producer at Penguin Random House UK.
How did you get into publishing?
I did publishing work experience on 3 different occasions, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel for 8 years. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).
What do you use to film?
I have a Canon 60D with a Tokina 11-16 lens (which is super useful if you want to sit close to your camera and still get a wide shot) and I use a window as my natural lighting. I edit my videos in Final Cut X.

Stress rash alert!!! - Did anyone see the red blotches appear on my face (the sides) and chest when I started feeling stressed (when talking about food/eating)? The camera doesn't show it that much, thankfully. Does anyone else get this weird rash? I hate it. I get it most when I'm angry and it's usually much worse.
Also, the ending bit '...even if you don't' came out way more aggressive than it should have! Haha. Sorry, guys!

Of course, there are plenty more things to see and learn about. The video was a one man and a camera piece of test footage. I know I didn't do it justice and one day it would be great to return as my TV persona, The Bald Explorer, and do it properly. (I also have to confess, I shot this after an eye operation - and I was on steroids at the time. I subsequently lost my eye all together.) Anyway, I hope you enjoy the simple look at a delightful city.

Places to see in ( Exeter - UK ) Exeter is an ancient city on the River Exe in southwest England. Dating back to the Roman era, the Exeter City Walls surround its centre and Gothic Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Castle, a Norman landmark, overlooks leafy Northernhay and Rougemont Gardens. To their west, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) displays fine art and costumes. From the High Street to Princesshay shopping centre. This is a compilation showing Exeter Shopping centre from The High Street to the Princesshay Shopping Centre. In the shopping centre you can see a number of famous brand names such as The White Company, Urban Outfitters, Apple and Marks and Spencer. There is a view of Exeter Cathedral in this video. The final shot shows Southernhey Church and pans over the Princesshay Shopping centre, again showing the Cathedral. This was filmed on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. Exeter has some fantastic shopping opportunities.

Exeter was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, although there is evidence a Cornish tribe existed in Exeter before the Roman invasion. Exeter became a religious centre during the Middle Ages and into the Tudor times: Exeter Cathedral, founded in the mid 11th century, became Anglican during the 16th-century English Reformation. During the late 19th century, Exeter became an affluent centre for the wool trade, although by the First World War the city was in decline. After the Second World War, much of the city centre was rebuilt and is now considered to be a centre for modern business and tourism in Devon and Cornwall.
The M5 motorway to Bristol and Exeter starts at Birmingham, and connects at Bristol with the M4 to London and South Wales. Exeter's main operator of local buses is Stagecoach South West, which operates most of the services in the city. Dartline is a minor operator in the City. Places to see in ( Exeter - UK )
Exeter is an ancient city on the River Exe in southwest England. Dating back to the Roman era, the Exeter City Walls surround its centre and Gothic Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Castle, a Norman landmark, overlooks leafy Northernhay and Rougemont Gardens. To their west, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) displays fine art and costumes. Dead State - The Zombie Survival RPG
Dead State is a compelling, high-tension RPG set at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse - a deadly illness is rampaging through the world, turning those infected into the walking dead. As society is beginning to fall apart, the player in Dead State must organize a scant handful of allies, working on fortifying a shelter, scouting for food and supplies, making uncertain alliances with others, and attempting to hold together a group as humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. It is one of the major steam tours of the year and we were on hand to grab the move out of London and the majority through Scotland with The Railway Touring Company's The Great Britain 6
Our first clip will see The Great Britain hauled out of London Victoria by Battle of Britain Class 34067 Tangmere, departing on time and making a mess of the camera as she leaves on day 1 with 1Z82 from London Victoria through to Exeter St Davids
We then miss days 2 and 3 as the tour comes through Bristol, Cardiff, Shrewsbury and Preston and rejoin the tour in Scotland, specifically Slateford. Day 4 sees Ian Riley's twin terriers, 44871 and 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier powering through Slateford, running about sixty six minutes late with 1Z60 from Preston to Edinburgh via Carlisle
Then, right behind it and running almost one hundred and thirty minutes late, West Coast Railway Company's 47760 is then seen trundling onto the avoiding loop to work 0Z60 Preston to Edinburgh
Day 5 is the highlight of the tour and an additional leg of the tour, named The Aberdonian, and we start at North Queensferry where 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier, working in solo and powering off of the Forth Rail Bridge working 1Z65 from Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen via the Fife Circular and Dundee
Then the true highlight, seeing John Cameron's LNER A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa, a Scottish A4, coming back later in the day and through the heat haze and lowering sun working 1Z67 and running about five minutes early, giving about twenty seconds of that A4 whistle chime
We then see 47760 returning, working 0Z67
Day 6 sees us at a very wet and soggy Edinburgh Waverley and for Ian Riley's other twin 44871, working out of Edinburgh Waverley and the other way, running 1Z25 from Edinburgh Waverley to Thornton TC. This is the leg of the tour where the train splits and 44871 continues onto Inverness working 1Z26 where it would join up with 45407
The second part of day 6 sees us at Larbert station, the weather cleared up nicely and for our first ever K4 railtour as 61994 The Great Marquess works 1Z27 from Thornton TC through to Fort William with her tradition whistle chime
We miss day 7 because of the tours being in the highlands but see day 8 and both trains are seen at Edinburgh Park station where we first see the K4 coming back from Fort William and heading straight to Edinburgh Waverley working 1Z66, almost bowling out the people on the other side with 170428 at it again!
About two hours later, the Black 5s are back in tandem as 44871 and 45407, with 45407 chiming on the whistle as she powers through the station, working 1Z42 from Inverness. This tour took the loop around the back of Edinburgh Waverley and allowed us the chance to get into Waverley before it and then see it coming into the station, both Black 5s whistling like mad once under the train canopy
We also see 47760 moving around Waverley and then taking the two Black 5s off to Craigentinny depot. For those who are wondering, 44871 is the Black 5 with the deeper sounding whistle and the other is 45407
Then, The Great Britain has to go home and who better to take it back home than the Scottish A4 at Edinburgh Waverley and, working 1Z28 from Edinburgh Waverley to York where stablemate 4464 Bittern would take over the tour, 60009 Union of South Africa arrives in a few minutes early before departing bang on 09:33 and heading straight down the East Coast Main Line
A truly fantastic tour and if we would do it again? YOU DAMN RIGHT WE WOULD!!!!!!!!
