'Better Way' is the opening track from a remarkable album called 'Little Blue Egg' (Red House), by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. Carter died suddenly of a heart attack in 2002. The tracks on this album come from old living-room tapes that Tracy found. "Listening to the CD, you realize just how much we lost when Carter died," wrote Jeff Burger in No Depression.

Tracy Grammer first saw Dave Carter perform at a songwriter's showcase shortly after she moved to Portland, Oregon. "As far as I was concerned, the rest of the room disappeared at that point. I knew instantly that I was in the presence of greatness." They met on their way out the door and by early 1998 had entered into a mutual "marriage in music."
Their unique strengths came together in powerful synergy. Carter conjured mystical, romantic true fictions while Grammer complemented his expert guitar, banjo and voice with beautifully intoned violin, guitar, mandolin and emotionally potent vocals. Grammer's budding production skills led them to record their first album, "When I Go," in Grammer's kitchen. The simple, no frills recording built on Carter's impressive songwriting wins (at Kerrville, Wildflower and Napa Valley) and garnered the unknown duo a feature article in the LA Times. The prescient writer declared Carter "a major lyrical talent" and proclaimed their self-released album "discovery of the year."
By 2000, they were signed to Signature Sounds and released "Tanglewood Tree" on the well respected Massachusetts label. The album swept the folk airwaves, finishing as the #1 Most Played Album on Folk Radio for 2000. The 2001 release of the polished "Drum Hat Buddha" brought Grammer into high relief. Her vocals were featured on fully half of the cuts and her astute production leadership resulted in what many regarded as their studio tour de force. With mainstream airplay on the Triple A charts and solid Americana and folk play as well, the duo was flooded with praise. "If the voice of modern folk is changing - it is going to sound a lot like Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer." (BostonGlobe); "In any rational universe, Carter & Grammer would be spoken of in the same terms of Bob Dylan and John Lennon...their recording is that good." (Dirty Linen).
On the heels of this heady response, Carter and Grammer joined fan and folk icon Joan Baez on her early 2002 east coast tour. In addition to their feature set, the two also served as backing band members. Grammer found herself in the spotlight as the featured instrumentalist and with her voice exquisitely balanced in counterpoint to Baez' rich vocals. Meanwhile, Carter's compositions were covered by Baez in company with songs by Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard and Steve Earle -- an incredible endorsement by one of the foremost curators and interpreters of modern American songwriting.
The spring and summer of 2002 saw Carter and Grammer on the road, with an itinerary of the nation's top venues and festival son their slate. On Friday July 19, while staying in their favorite hotel in western Massachusetts, Carter returned from a run, complaining of chest pains. He expired in Grammer's arms from a massive heart attack, just three weeks shy of his 50th birthday.
Grammer's brave response to her own loss was to embrace the musical community's collective loss. In the following weeks, she anchored musical tributes at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and the official Portland memorial service. With a composure informed by emotional depth, Grammer lifted her lone voice with grace and power -- ensuring Carter's legacy and her own solo journey in music.
Just days after Carter passed away, Grammer foretold her musical future in a letter she posted on their web site: "We need to keep this music alive, it was always my mission that the world hear and know the poetry and vision and wonderful mystical magic of David Carter. This path is broad and long; I hope you will stay the course with me."

Dave Carter (August 13, 1952 – July 19, 2002) was an American folk singer-songwriter who described his style as "post-modern mythic American folk music." He was one half of the duo Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, who were heralded as the new "voice of modern folk music" in the months before Carter's unexpected death in July 2002. They were ranked as number one on the year-end list for "Top Artists" on the Folk Music Radio Airplay Chart for 2001 and 2002, and their popularity has endured in the years following Carter's death.Joan Baez who went on tour with the duo in 2002 spoke of Carter's songs in the same terms that she once used to promote a young Bob Dylan:

Tracy Grammer
Tracy Grammer is an American folk singer known for her work as half of the folk duo Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer and for the solo career that she has continued since Carter's death. She released three albums with Dave Carter during his lifetime, at first doing instrumental work and providing backing vocals, and then, by their last album together, singing lead vocals on half of the tracks. Four albums by the duo have been released following Carter's death. She has also released three solo recordings, some of which have included previously unreleased songs by Carter, as well as two songbooks.
Biography
Born in Homestead, Florida, Tracy Grammer was raised in Southern California and began her musical journey on a borrowed violin at the age of 9. She came from a musical family. Her father, Jim Grammer, played acoustic, electric, and lap steel guitars. Distant relation Leo Fortin played violin and was best known for playing double-trumpets in Lawrence Welk's orchestra. She earned a degree in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer
Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer were an American folk duo who released three albums from 1998 to 2001, as well as additional material released after Dave Carter's death. The duo consisted of Dave Carter (songwriter, vocals, banjo, guitar, organ) and Tracy Grammer, (producer, vocals, violin, mandolin, guitar).
Their work dealt with a number of themes, particularly Buddhist theology, Arthurian legend (and mythic themes in general), and the American west, often juxtaposed together in one song. In 2002, shortly before his death, Dave spoke of the duo's "ever-burgeoning goddess repertoire" as another lyric theme. One example of his admixture of themes may be found in the closing lines of "Happytown," the first track from the album, Tanglewood Tree:
Their first album, When I Go, was actually released as a Dave Carter album "with Tracy Grammer" and Carter sang the lead vocals on all but one of the tracks, "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love," which was a duet. Produced by the duo, the album was recorded in Grammer's kitchen. Their second album, Tanglewood Tree, featured a more even split of singing duties, and was the first to actually be labeled as a Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer album. The album was described by Carter in an interview as "the world's first Buddhist country album." Their third album (the last released before Carter's death), Drum Hat Buddha, maintained an even split between the two on lead vocals. This album met with considerable critical success, and the pair was considered by prominent reviewers to be one of the most promising new folk acts then active. In 2002, they toured the United States with folk legend Joan Baez, who described Carter's lyric writing as "a kind of genius"

Carter
Carter is a surname which originally meant a person who hauls goods in a cart. It comes from the Gaelic and Celtic word cairt (cart). Being of Gaelic and Celtic origins the name originated in Ireland and Scotland and later migrated to England where it was reduced to its English pronunciation and form. However, this name stems from a few common surnames, the names being McCarthy, McArthur and McCarter.

Calamity and her aide, Colorado Charley try to run Gordon out of town but this fails, and he and the niece are soon on Calamity's side against Baker.

'Better Way' is the opening track from a remarkable album called 'Little Blue Egg' (Red House), by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. Carter died suddenly of a heart attack in 2002. The tracks on this album come from old living-room tapes that Tracy found. "Listening to the CD, you realize just how much we lost when Carter died," wrote Jeff Burger in No Depression. The prescient writer declared Carter "a major lyrical talent" and proclaimed their self-released album "discovery of the year."
By 2000, they were signed to Signature Sounds and released "Tanglewood Tree" on the well respected Massachusetts label. The album swept the folk airwaves, finishing as the #1 Most Played Album on Folk Radio for 2000. The 2001 release of the polished "Drum Hat Buddha" brought Grammer into high relief. Her vocals were featured on fully half of the cuts and her astute production leadership resulted in what many regarded as their studio tour de force. With mainstream airplay on the Triple A charts and solid Americana and folk play as well, the duo was flooded with praise. "If the voice of modern folk is changing - it is going to sound a lot like Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer." (BostonGlobe); "In any rational universe, Carter & Grammer would be spoken of in the same terms of Bob Dylan and John Lennon...their recording is that good." (Dirty Linen).
On the heels of this heady response, Carter and Grammer joined fan and folk icon Joan Baez on her early 2002 east coast tour. In addition to their feature set, the two also served as backing band members. Grammer found herself in the spotlight as the featured instrumentalist and with her voice exquisitely balanced in counterpoint to Baez' rich vocals. Meanwhile, Carter's compositions were covered by Baez in company with songs by Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard and Steve Earle -- an incredible endorsement by one of the foremost curators and interpreters of modern American songwriting.
The spring and summer of 2002 saw Carter and Grammer on the road, with an itinerary of the nation's top venues and festival son their slate. On Friday July 19, while staying in their favorite hotel in western Massachusetts, Carter returned from a run, complaining of chest pains. He expired in Grammer's arms from a massive heart attack, just three weeks shy of his 50th birthday.
Grammer's brave response to her own loss was to embrace the musical community's collective loss. In the following weeks, she anchored musical tributes at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and the official Portland memorial service. With a composure informed by emotional depth, Grammer lifted her lone voice with grace and power -- ensuring Carter's legacy and her own solo journey in music.
Just days after Carter passed away, Grammer foretold her musical future in a letter she posted on their web site: "We need to keep this music alive, it was always my mission that the world hear and know the poetry and vision and wonderful mystical magic of David Carter. This path is broad and long; I hope you will stay the course with me."

They signed to Columbia in 1966, and while they never were to become a national success, their singles and albums continued to sell well in the Chicago area. The group disbanded in December 1969, but reunited again and continues to tour. Jim "J.C. Hooke" Pilster and Tom Doody (Toad) are the only remaining original members in the current lineup. Two members of The Cryan' Shames have since died: bassist Dave Purple in June 2001, and his replacement Isaac Guillory, on December 31, 2000.
Synthesis is the third album by The Cryan' Shames and was released in 1968. It contains some lineup changes from their second album, A Scratch in the Sky. Drummer Dennis Conroy was replaced by Alan Dawson, and Jim Fairs moved on with Dave Carter on guitar. Synthesis is an apt name for an album that, like its predecessor, A Scratch in the Sky, proved the Cryan' Shames to be among the most versatile mainstream pop/rock groups of the late 1960s.

Her vocals were featured on fully half of the cuts and her astute production leadership resulted in what many regarded as their studio tour de force. With mainstream airplay on the Triple A charts and solid Americana and folk play as well, the duo was flooded with praise. "If the voice of modern folk is changing - it is going to sound a lot like Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer." (BostonGlobe); "In any rational universe, Carter & Grammer would be spoken of in the same terms of Bob Dylan and John Lennon...their recording is that good." (Dirty Linen).
On the heels of this heady response, Carter and Grammer joined fan and folk icon Joan Baez on her early 2002 east coast tour. Grammer found herself in the spotlight as the featured instrumentalist and with her voice exquisitely balanced in counterpoint to Baez' rich vocals. Meanwhile, Carter's compositions were covered by Baez in company with songs by Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard and Steve Earle -- an incredible endorsement by one of the foremost curators and interpreters of modern American songwriting.
The spring and summer of 2002 saw Carter and Grammer on the road, with an itinerary of the nation's top venues and festival son their slate. On Friday July 19, while staying in their favorite hotel in western Massachusetts, Carter returned from a run, complaining of chest pains.
