A man has been charged with assault after he allegedly threw a beer bottle at a Muslim woman in Beeliar.

The woman claims she was attacked after an exchange of words with the 33-year-old Success man at the Beeliar Village on Friday night.

Police will allege the man threw a beer bottle at a woman outside the shopping centre at about 8.45pm.

The woman was not seriously injured by the bottle.

It's understood the man was with a woman and four children before the incident.

He has been charged with common assault in circumstances of aggravation and will appear in the Fremantle Magistrates court on January 30.

The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, told WAtoday on Monday she was walking into Coles around 8.30pm when a man yelled out "Merry Christmas".

"I turned around and said and 'happy holidays' to you," she alleges.

"He then yelled, 'no Merry Christmas', so I said 'ok, then he called me a "f---ing Muslim c--t."

"I asked him what he said and I saw him grab a bottle so I quickly turned away and he threw it at me and it smashed on my shoulder and neck."

The 33-year-old said her headscarf came off during a scuffle, which the man dumped near the shopping complex.
