So the first thing that you’re going to notice is that the 7d is a big camera. It’s quite a lot heavier than the 80d but also fits nicely in your hand. And if you’re going to be shooting with telephoto lenses, that can be a good thing especially to get the balance back. The 80d for me is the sweet spot for a dslr. Not too heavy, but not too light either. Now if you’re going to be shooting in rainy and dusty conditions, you might want to look towards the 7d mark ii as it’s full weather sealed whereas the 80d is just weather resistant. Now i’ve taken the 80d out in rain and had no problems, but if you’re ereally going to push it, i’d go for the 7d. - LCD Screen - Now one of my favourite features on the Canon 80d is it’s fully articulating screen. It’s fantastic. It’s not something I thought I’d use a lot, but i do. On the 7d mark ii we don’t have one and it’s a pity. When you want to compose your shots from down low, or from up high, say at a sporting event in a pack of other photographers, having that ability to have a swivelling lcd screen would be nice. Now a lot of people say that this could break off, but to be totally honest, I’ve never had a problem with it and i think a lot of people would like to see it added. - Touch Screen - Another feature which i wasn’t sure if i’d use a lot was the touch screen on the 80d. It’s really useful, especially for video work. As you know, both of these cameras have great dual pixel autofocus systems, but i really feel like the 80d is harnessing that power by having a touch screen. Being able to select on the screen what you want to be in focus is fantastic, and you can get some really great focus pulls with it. On the 7d mark 2 we have a little trigger to move your focus point. It works, but it’s just not the same. - SD Slots - Now one thing that the 7d is definitely doing better is it’s card slots, it has two. One for sd cards and one for cf cards. Having the ability to have a backup of what your shooting onto another card is huge, especially if you never want to miss that shot at a wedding, of a bird or at a big sporting event. To me it’s something I’d love to see on the next version of the 80d. - Top LCD - At the top of the camera right here both of these cameras have top lcd’s which are nice. Overall there’s not a whole lot different between the two. The 7d mark ii’s is slightly bigger if anything. - Viewfinder - Another of the big improvements to the 80d was it’s viewfinder coverage. The old 70d only had 98% coverage and it’s now been bumped up to 100% just like on the 7d mark ii. So you’ll be seing the same thing on both cameras. - Burst Mode - If your’e going to be shooting sports, you’ll definitely want to consider getting the 7d mark ii. It’s got an incredible 10 frames per second burst mode and also a higher buffer rate than the 80d. If you want to hear how that sounds, here it is: and this is what 7 frames per second sounds like on the 80d. 7 frames per second isn’t bad, but having 10 fps is definitely something i like to have have when shooting high speed subjects. - Wifi - One thing that i was disappointed that was missing from the 7d and was wifi, which is something that the 80d has. The ability to be able to quickly transfer photos to your phone or computer is key these days, especially in the world of instant media, and it’s something that i really like on the 80d. On the other hand the 7d mark ii does have gps, which is something that the 80d doesn’t have. Take your pick really. - Autofocus - So of course both of these cameras have some incredible autofocus capabilities. The 7d mark ii has 65 autofocus points compared to the 45 on the 80d. In general shooting it’s actually not that noticeable, but once you get into shooting fast sports and wildlfie, the 7d really is impressive. If you’re a professional, looking for the highest autofocusing capabilities, i’d look for the 7d, bit if your a semi-pro or someone who just likes to get out and shoot, the 80d will be more than fast enough. - Sensor - One are where you wouldn’t think a cheaper camera would come out on top is the sensor, and i found that the 80d did. It’s got a new 24mp sensor, compared to the 20mp sensor in the 7d. Now i’m not normally big on megapixels, but if you do like to crop your photos, which a lot of wildlife and sports photographers do, than theres a definte reason to look at the 80d.
