Weather Warnings - Flood Warning
Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
Northern Territory
Flood Watch for Central and Western Inland Rivers
Issued at 12:59 pm CST on Thursday 22 December 2016
Flood watch number: 2
An active monsoon trough extends along the west coast of the Top End into a
tropical low located over the Kimberley region. The low is expected to continue
moving south-southwest over the next few days before moving southeast towards
the Lasseter District over the weekend.
Isolated rainfall totals of around 30 mm have been recorded over the past 24
hours in parts of the Western and Central Inland River catchment areas.
Areas of heavy rainfall starting from this weekend may lead to four day totals
of between 100 mm and 200 mm. Isolated heavier falls up to 300mm are also
possible in the southwest, closer to the low. These falls may lead to strong
river and stream rises which may affect road access at times. Some communities
may become isolated.
Catchments likely to be affected over the next few days include the Wiso,
Mackay, Burt, Finke and Todd River catchments.
See www.bom.gov.au/australia/warnings/ to view all of the Bureau's current
warning products.
The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
- Avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
- Stop children playing in or near floodwaters
- Create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillowcases and
shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your
home
- Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be
treated as live
