Weather Warnings - Flood Warning

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
Northern Territory

Flood Watch for the Bonaparte and North West Coastal Rivers
Issued at 12:05 pm CST on Thursday 22 December 2016
Flood Watch Number: 7

An active monsoon trough extends along the west coast of the Top End into a
tropical low located over the Kimberley region and is causing widespread shower
and storm activity about the western Top End and Victoria River. Showers and
storms will ease from Friday as the low moves further south.

Rainfall totals of between 25 mm to 150 mm have been recorded over the past 24
hours across the western Top End, in parts of the Bonaparte and North West
Coastal Rivers.

Areas of heavy rainfall between 50 mm to 100 mm are expected to continue across
the western Top End and Victoria River for another day. Areas of very heavy
rainfall up to 150 mm are possible about the coastal areas of the western Top
End. These falls may lead to strong river and stream rises which may affect
road access at times. Some communities may become isolated.

Catchments likely to be affected over the next few days include the Victoria,
Adelaide, Daly and Katherine Rivers.

See www.bom.gov.au/australia/warnings/ to view all of the Bureau's current
warning products.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
- Avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
- Stop children playing in or near floodwaters
- Create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillowcases and
shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your
home
- Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be
treated as live
