How police nabbed 14 law-breaking drivers in a dead-end court

You're driving an unlicensed car and have been drinking when you spot a booze bus up ahead:

It is more difficult to enforce the rules on drugs and alcohol on the roads than in aviation.

Your heart races, but then you see there is a street to the left before the roadblock.

So you turn down it, allowing yourself a smirk at how deftly you evaded the cops.

But there is another police car waiting at the dead end court, and a police officer pulls you over and asks you to take a breath test:

The man allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.177 per cent.

Your smirk disappears.

That's what happened to 14 motorists who were nabbed by a police car stationed in Rimington Court in Hampton Park on Tuesday night.

The no-longer-smirking 14, none of whom were residents of the court, were pipped for a range of offences including drink driving and using an unlicensed or unregistered vehicle. One of those caught was an L-plater who was driving unaccompanied by an adult.

Meanwhile, the booze bus that was set up between Rimington Court and Verona Drive on Pound Road netted just five offenders in the space of six hours.

It is not uncommon for police to spring this type of trap on motorists who think they can get away with breaking the law.

The initiative was part of Operation Roadwise, a statewide program targeting high-risk drivers over the Christmas and holiday period.

Police launched the operation last Friday by displaying a Christmas tree decorated with 279 baubles, each of them symbolising someone who died on Victorian roads this year.
