Court for the Calais port occupiers / Tribunal pour les occupants du port

On the 25th of January, 8 defendants were led out in front of the Tribunal de Grande Instance (TGI) in Boulogne-Sur-Mer for occupying the ‘Spirit of Britain’ ferry after Saturday’s protest in Calais port. 6 of the defendants were people without papers from the Jungle, charged with a breach of the transport code which involved entering a ferry without permission. The residents of the Jungle that appeared in court today were from conflict zones across the world, there were people from Afghanistan, Sudan, and Syria. There were also 2 supporters in court, these two francophones were charged with the same breach of the transport code and also face an extra charge of facilitating entry. The maximum sentence for these offenses is 6 months in prison or a €3,500 fine.
The accelerated nature of the hearing was a point of contention. After the defence barristers were informed that all 8 cases would be heard together, they requested that the tribunal be delayed. The judges decided to put the hearing back until February 22nd. After the delays placed upon this case the 2 francophone supporters were released on bail, while the 6 people without papers were held in dentention. They have since been returned to Longeunesse penitentary near Saint-Omer to stew for a month in prision before the next hearing. Calais Migrant Solidarity will be organising prisoner support for those detained in the coming month.
The political nature of this prosecution is obvious. After a demonstration involving over two thousand people and supported by an entire pletheroa of organisations (including: ATMF, CISPM, CNT-RP, Collectif Paris 20ème Solidaire avec touTEs les migrantEs, CSP 75, Droits Devant !!!, EELV Paris, Intégration 21, La Horde, LDH, NPA, Sans-Voix Paris 18ème, SNPES-PJJ-FSU IDF, SUD Culture, UJFP, Union Locale Solidaires des 5e-13e arrondissements de Paris et d’Ivry, UNSP, London2Calais, and Nord-Pas-de-Calais Antifascists) these 8 people face prosecution. Similar to the continual disrubitions over the summer and the imprisonment and political prosecution of the three Channel Tunnel walkers for ‘disrupting a railway carriage’, even after one of the defendants, Abdul Rahman Haroun, was granted asylum. The French state is reproducing the tactics of its British counterpart by criminalising the actions of those fighting the border. As those without papers, detained by the state for willing to fight for their freedom of movement, sit in their cells tonight, those outside the prisons walls should not forget our friends inside!

Dans le 25 janvier, 8 inculpés passaient devant le Tribunal de Grande Instance (TGI) de Boulogne-sur-Mer pour occupation du ferry “Spirit Of Britain” après la manifestation de samedi au port de Calais. 6 des inculpés étaient des sans-papiers de la Jungle, accusés d’infraction au code du transport qu’implique l’entrée dans un ferry sans permission. Les résidents de la jungle qui sont apparus à la cour aujourd’hui viennent de zones de conflits d’à travers le monde. Ils viennent d’Afghanistan, du Soudan, et de Syrie. 2 soutiens étaient également inculpés. Ces deux francophones ont été inculpés pour la même infraction au code du transport avec en prime une inculpation de “faciliter l’entrée”. La peine maximum pour ces faits est de 6 mois de prison ou une amende de 3500 euros.
La nature accélérée de l’audience a été un point contentieux. Après que les avocats ont été informés que les 8 cas seraient entendus ensemble, ils ont demandé au tribunal que le procès soit reporté. Les juges ont décidé un report d’audience pour le 22 février. Une fois le report obtenu sur cette affaire, les 2 soutiens français ont été libéré sous contrôle judiciaire avec interdiction de se rendre dans la région et les 6 sans papiers ont été envoyé en détention. Ils sont depuis au centre pénitencier de Longuenesse près de Saint Omer, à mariner pendant un mois en prison avant la prochaine audition. CMS organisera un soutien aux prisonniers pour les détenus du mois prochain.
La nature politique de ce procès est évidente. Après une manifestation impliquant plus de 2000 personnes et soutenue par une pléthore d’organisations ( incluant : ATMF, CISPM, CNT-RP, Collectif Paris 20ème Solidaire avec touTEs les migrantEs, CSP 75, Droits Devant !!!, EELV Paris, Intégration 21, La Horde, LDH, NPA, Sans-Voix Paris 18ème, SNPES-PJJ-FSU IDF, SUD Culture, UJFP, Union Locale Solidaires des 5e-13e arrondissements de Paris et d’Ivry, UNSP, London2Calais, et Nord-Pas-de-Calais Antifasciste), ces 8 personnes font face à un procès. Similaire au raffut continu depuis cet été et l’emprisonnement et le procès politique des 3 marcheurs du tunnel, inculpés de “perturbation de la structure ferrée”, alors même que l’un des inculpés, Abdul Rahman Haroun, a obtenu le droit d’asile en Angleterre par la suite. L’État français reproduit les tactiques de son homologue britannique en criminalisant les actions de ceux et celles qui combattent la frontière. Alors que ces sans-papiers, détenus par l’état pour avoir voulu combattre pour leur liberté de circulation, assis dans leurs cellules ce soir, ceux hors des murs n’oublieront pas leurs amis à l’intérieur !
The storming of the tunnel last night/ La prise d’assaut du tunnel la nuit dernière
(UPDATE ON ARRESTS SUNDAY EVENING: Police held 23 of the people captured. At least 18 of them have now been released, we are awaiting news of the remaining five.)
Last night after midnight over 200 people without papers broke through the vicious razor wire fences and invaded the channel tunnel, trying to make it to England. According to the authorities, some made it 10 miles in before being stopped. Maybe some, unknown to the authorities, even made it through.
The tunnel was shut down all night, and this had a knock-on effect as freight traffic was redirected to the port, backing up the roads causing a major traffic jam which allowed others to get inside trucks. At about 8.30 this morning, there was a further traffic jam as people without papers made barricades across the dual carriageway above the jungle, stopping trucks and climbing inside. Strangely only two vans of gendarmes (French military police) were present, frantically driving back and forth for an hour gassing people and trying to run them over, but powerless to stop them.
Unfortunately, these daring actions came at a heavy price. Over 100 people were arrested in the tunnel last night. 7 were injured by cops, some maybe quite seriously. As of this evening, over 20 people were still being held. We don’t know as yet if they will be released, or sent to detention centres with a view to deportation, or charged with criminal offences. In either of the last two cases, we need to give our active solidarity.
That is what has been happening in the real world. Meanwhile, in a fantasy world, French police “trade union” representatives once again issued statements, lapped up by the right wing press on both sides of the channel, blaming “anarchists” for “coordinating” the offensive on the tunnel. We can say the following about this:
The collective actions last night and this morning, as other offensives in recent weeks, were self-organised by people without papers. People from Africa and Asia don’t need European anarchists to incite or organise them. These are people who have fought revolutions, lived through wars, undertaken perilous journeys, all of which may mean not just great individual courage, initiative and resilience but also collective solidarity and self-organisation. The “British anarchist” line from the cops and journalists is insulting and deeply racist. We “No Borders”, anarchists and others, are proud to stand in solidarity with our friends without papers. But these actions are theirs, they don’t need us to lead them or show them how to fight.
Why are the authorities and media spreading these allegations? Coordinated collective action against the borders by people without papers is very powerful. Across Europe, in recent months, such actions have been spreading and increasing in scale and intensity. This clearly scares those who want to maintain “Fortress Europe”. But action by migrants alone may not be enough to really shake the murderous border regime. Our power will be strongest when people with and without papers fight together. This seems to be what the authorities are trying to prevent above all: their aim is to isolate migrant struggles, make them invisible and alien, confine them in the ghetto miles out of town. Trying to demonise and criminalise our solidarity is a move in that game. It won’t succeed.
Al shab yurid iskat al-hudud. The people want to bring down the border.

La prise d’assaut du tunnel la nuit dernière
(MISE À JOUR SUR LES ARRESTATIONS dimanche soir: la police a tenu 23 des personnes capturées. Au moins 18 d’entre eux ont été libérés, nous attendons des nouvelles des cinq autres.)
Hier soir (2 octobre 2015), après minuit plus de 200 personnes sans papiers ont franchi les barrières de barbelés aux lames de rasoir vicieuses et ont envahi le tunnel sous la Manche, en essayant de se rendre à l’Angleterre. Selon les autorités, certains ont parcouru 16 km (10 miles) en avant d’être arrêtés. Peut-être aussi que certains, à l’insu des autorités, ont réussi à traverser.
Le tunnel a été fermé toute la nuit, ce qui a eu comme conséquence la déviation du trafic du fret vers le port, provoquant un énorme embouteillage, ce qui a permis a d’autres de monter à l’intérieur des camions. À environ 8h30 ce matin (3 octobre), il y a eu un autre embouteillage car des personnes sans papiers ont érigé des barricades à travers la quatre voies au-dessus de la jungle, arrêtant les camions pour monter à l’intérieur. Étrangement, seulement deux camionnettes de gendarmes étaient présentes, conduisant frénétiquement dans les deux sens, gazant les gens et essayant de les écraser, mais impuissant à les arrêter.
Malheureusement, ces actions audacieuses ont eu un lourd prix. Plus de 100 personnes ont été arrêtées dans le tunnel la nuit dernière et 7 ont été blessées par les flics, certaines très sérieusement. Ce soir (3 octobre), plus de 20 personnes étaient toujours détenues. Nous ne savons pas encore si elles seront libérées, envoyées dans des centres de rétention en vue d’être expulsées, ou inculpés pour des infractions pénales. Dans chacun de ces deux derniers cas, nous devrons leur apporter notre solidarité active.
Voilà ce qui se passe dans le monde réel. Pendant ce temps, dans un monde imaginaire, les syndicats de police ont une fois de plus fait des déclarations, reprises avec empressement par la presse des deux côtés de la Manche, accusant les “anarchistes” d’avoir “coordonné” l’offensive sur le tunnel. Nous pouvons dire la chose suivante à ce sujet :
Les actions collectives de la nuit dernière et ce matin, comme d’autres offensives au cours des dernières semaines, ont été auto-organisés par des personnes sans papiers. Les gens de l’Afrique et l’Asie n’ont pas besoins des anarchistes européens pour les inciter ou les organiser. Ce sont des gens qui ont mené des révolutions, vécu des guerres, entrepris un voyage périlleux, et tout cela signifie faire preuve non seulement de courage, d’initiative et de résistance individuel, mais aussi de solidarité collective et d’auto-organisation. La ligne “anarchiste britannique” des flics et des journalistes est insultant et profondément raciste. Nous les “No Borders”, les anarchistes et les autres, sommes fiers d’exprimer notre solidarité avec nos amis sans papiers. Mais ces actions sont les leurs, ils n’ont pas besoin de nous pour les mener ou pour leur montrer comment se battre.

Against the state’s lies/ Contre les mensonges de l`etat
Across Europe the recent migrant lead protests have been undermining and highlighting the contradiction of borders everywhere. In Calais there has never been such a wave of sustained protests against the border here with eight separate actions having taken place in just the past ten days. The authorities here are trying to delegitimize these protests by claiming that they are organized by ‘the No Borders’ who are instrumentalizing the groups in the jungle for their own ends.
There is a deep racism in these lies which imply that ‘those people in the jungle’ cannot organize themselves but rather need white/european leadership. This is simply not the case. Many of those in the jungle have been organizing politically all of their lives and in much more unforgiving political circumstances than those of Calais. There is a very strong movement happening here which is entirely migrant led. By claiming otherwise, the authorities are trying to ignore and dismiss the people protesting here along with their demands as somehow ‘not genuine’.
Those Europeans or people otherwise having legal status who participate in the movement here do so because they share the same ideas and demands but they did not invent them. The need to abolish the European border regime is never more evident than it is to those who come up against it everyday.
The people demanding their freedom of movement do so because their lives depend on it. We are always happy to join them.
Partout en Europe les récentes manifestations menees par des migrants, mettent en évidence les contradictions des politiques des frontières. À Calais, il n’y a jamais eu une telle vague de protestation contre les frontières: huit actions distinctes ayant eu lieu ses dix derniers jours. Les autorités tentent de rendre illegitime ces protestations en affirmant qu’elles sont organisées par «No Borders” qui instrumentaliserait des groupes de la jungle pour leurs propres fins.
Il ya un profond racisme dans ces mensonges qui impliquent que «ces gens de la jungle» ne peuvent pas s’ organiser mais plutôt qu’ils auraient besoin de “gerence” blanche / européenne. Ce n’est pas le cas. Beaucoup de personnes de la jungle sont deja politiquement organisees et dans des circonstances politiques beaucoup plus impitoyables que celles de Calais. Il ya un mouvement très fort qui se passe ici qui est entièrement dirigé par les migrants. En niant cette conscience politique, les autorités meprisent de nouveau ces personnes et les rejetent en minimisant leurs revendications.
Ces Européens ou les personnes qui possedent un statut juridique et qui participent au mouvement a Calais et ailleurs, le font parce qu’ils partagent les mêmes idées politiques de liberte et de droit de circuler. La nécessité d’abolir le régime européen des frontières est plus évident que jamais, et c’est a ces personnes qui sont confrontees tous les jours au regime des lois sur les frontieres qu incombe la legitimite de lutter.
Les gens réclament leur Liberté de mouvement et le font parce que leurs vies en dépendent. Nous sommes toujours heureux de se joindre à eux.
