On October 2nd Guinea s leader who seized power in a coup in February 2009 said that elections will continue as planned even as his military junta prepared to bury 57 people who died when troops fired live ammunition into a pro-democracy rally.
Captain Moussa Dadis Camara made the comment during celebrations marking Guinea s independence from France 51 years ago.
Wearing a crisp military uniform Camara laid a wreath in memory of the victims of a massacre on September 28th..
Camara previously said he had no control over the troops - including his own presidential guard force - who committed the massacre in which 157 people were reportedly killed.
On October 2nd he took the offensive saying opposition leaders were to blame for the protesters deaths because they had defied a ban and organised the pro-democracy rally.
He said the election would proceed as scheduled on January 31.
But refusing to address the issue that sparked Monday s protest he did not say whether he would run.
Whether I will be candidate - at the moment I can t tell because I am between the hammer and the anvil Camara said.
Outside the main mosque in this sweltering seaside capital family members many weeping and others shouting in anger looked for bodies of their slain loved ones in about 10 makeshift tents.
Inside the tents the bodies were bound tightly in white cloth laying on wooden pallets.
Heavily armed police and soldiers kept watch over the mourners who numbered over 1000.
A human rights group says 157 people were killed and more than 1000 wounded on Monday when soldiers opened fire at
50000 people at the national soccer stadium.
The government put the death toll at 57.
Tensions remained high as opposition leaders snubbed Camara s offer to form a national unity government saying the massacre must be investigated and those responsible held accountable.
The victims were participating in a protest in the capital s main soccer stadium against Camara.
The injured included several top opposition leaders including former Prime Minister Cellou Diallo who flew to Francefor treatment.
The bloody demonstration of September 28th raised concerns that Camara s grip on the country may be slipping.
Camara a previously unknown army captain in his 40s was welcomed when he seized power just hours after the death of long-time dictator Lansana Conte.
Camara initially said he would not run in elections scheduled for January but recently indicated that he may have changed his mind.
After the September 28th protest he banned all gatherings and demonstrations.
Since winning independence from France Guinea has been pillaged by its ruling elite.
Its 10 million people are among the world s poorest even though its soil has diamonds gold iron and half the world s

LONDON (AP) — BP says it has failed to reach a settlement in advance of next week's civil trial on the Deepwater Horizon accident and is ready to defend itself vigorously against allegations of gross negligence in the U.S.'s biggest environmental disaster. Rupert Bondy, the group's general counsel, said in a statement Tuesday that settlement demands were "not based on reality or the merits of the case." Billions are at stake in the Feb. 25 trial in New Orleans to determine BP's civil liability. BP already agreed to a $4.5 billion settlement of federal criminal charges. The trial is designed to identify the causes of BP's well blowout in the disaster that killed 11 workers.

LONDON (AP) — BP says it has failed to reach a settlement in advance of next week's civil trial on the Deepwater Horizon accident and is ready to defend itself vigorously against allegations of gross negligence in the U.S.'s biggest environmental disaster. Rupert Bondy, the group's general counsel, said in a statement Tuesday that settlement demands were "not based on reality or the merits of the case." Billions are at stake in the Feb. 25 trial in New Orleans to determine BP's civil liability. BP already agreed to a $4.5 billion settlement of federal criminal charges. The trial is designed to identify the causes of BP's well blowout in the disaster that killed 11 workers.

Being Painted for a Cultural/Traditional "Singsing" Celebration - Papua New Guinea
Brittany is with her friends, getting ready for a festival, called a sing-sing. It is a traditional celebration, with music, dancing, costumes, and lots of food. Overall, it is a great time of fellowship and fun! The ladies found Brittany because they wanted to "bilas" (decorate) her face with some paint made from coconut oil and part of a tree. Cuy Al Horno: Eating Guinea Pig in Cusco, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
So last night's attempt to eat Cuy or Guinea Pig was a bit of a flop so we tried again tonight. We finally found a restaurant that is open and serving Guinea Pig, so yeah we've placed our order and we're sitting here just waiting for our first Cuy meal. This is a first for both me and Sam.
Okay, so time to spew off a few facts about Guinea Pig. Yeah, so the Cuy is something we've been wanting to try for a while now. It is one of the most traditional Peruvian foods you can possibly get. It originates from the Andes. It is a rodent. And apparently the meat is very high in protein and low in cholesterol. So it is healthy for you! Yeah, exactly. Who would have known. This is a perfect meal to have just before our hike to Machu Picchu. Yeah.
So another fun fact, because I know you guys really like those is that if you visit Cuszo Cathedral, once you go inside you'll see that there is a painting of Jesus and the 12 Disciples enjoying their last supper and guess what they're eating? It's a Guinea Pig and it is lying on its back with its little paws up in the air. So if Guinea Pig is good enough for Jesus and his Disciples we can certainly eat it while we're in Cusco.
And they were kind enough to let us go take a look at how it is being cooked and prepared. So let's go walk over and check out the wood fire burning oven. Just over there. Just over there. That is where our Cuy is being made.
So our dinner has arrived and I'm trying not to look at the Guinea Pig in the face because it kind of reminds me of my sister's two pet Chinchillas but there it is on the plate. And it comes with a few sides so if you look down here you can see that we have some golden potatoes, some fried yellow potato actually and we have a little salad and we also have a stuffed pepper with cheese melted over top. So yes, I guess the next step is to dig in to our Cuy.
So our server has kindly chopped up the Cuy because we didn't really know where to begin and apparently you have to eat this with your hands.
Wow, the meat is quite tender. You know what it tastes a lot like chicken. If I didn't know what I was eating I would have guessed it was chicken. That's good to know. It makes me a feel a little better about taking my first bite.
It's like stringy chicken. Yeah, like it even looks like chicken. Like the dark meat on a chicken. So you could fool me but I've seen the whole Guinea Pig on the plate. So now I know what I'm having and you just kind of have to get over that because it does make a bit of an impression on you. Especially if you have Chinchillas for pets because they just look so similar.
So moving on we're kind of taking a bite of its mid-section here. So what you really notice about when you have Guinea Pig is that the skin is really crispy but the meat inside is quite tender. I actually like it. We're also noticing that there are some organs and bones. Yeah, yeah and strange things inside our Cuy. It is very much cooked as it is and you eat it as it is presented. Yes, that is how you have Cuy in Peru.
So now the verdict. If you saw Cuy on a menu would you order it again? I'm not necessarily sure I would just because it is a bit expensive and I think that if you were to have something like chicken or something else you might get a little bit more meat. But I'm really glad I tried it. It tasted honestly better than I expected and uh yeah if you're Peru definitely try it though at a least once.

It originates from the Andes. It is a rodent. And apparently the meat is very high in protein and low in cholesterol. So it is healthy for you! Yeah, exactly. Who would have known. This is a perfect meal to have just before our hike to Machu Picchu. Yeah.
So another fun fact, because I know you guys really like those is that if you visit Cuszo Cathedral, once you go inside you'll see that there is a painting of Jesus and the 12 Disciples enjoying their last supper and guess what they're eating? It's a Guinea Pig and it is lying on its back with its little paws up in the air. So if Guinea Pig is good enough for Jesus and his Disciples we can certainly eat it while we're in Cusco.
And they were kind enough to let us go take a look at how it is being cooked and prepared. So let's go walk over and check out the wood fire burning oven. Just over there. Just over there. That is where our Cuy is being made.
So our dinner has arrived and I'm trying not to look at the Guinea Pig in the face because it kind of reminds me of my sister's two pet Chinchillas but there it is on the plate. And it comes with a few sides so if you look down here you can see that we have some golden potatoes, some fried yellow potato actually and we have a little salad and we also have a stuffed pepper with cheese melted over top. So yes, I guess the next step is to dig in to our Cuy.
So our server has kindly chopped up the Cuy because we didn't really know where to begin and apparently you have to eat this with your hands.
Wow, the meat is quite tender. You know what it tastes a lot like chicken. If I didn't know what I was eating I would have guessed it was chicken. That's good to know. It makes me a feel a little better about taking my first bite.
It's like stringy chicken. Yeah, like it even looks like chicken. Like the dark meat on a chicken. So you could fool me but I've seen the whole Guinea Pig on the plate. So now I know what I'm having and you just kind of have to get over that because it does make a bit of an impression on you. Especially if you have Chinchillas for pets because they just look so similar.
So moving on we're kind of taking a bite of its mid-section here. So what you really notice about when you have Guinea Pig is that the skin is really crispy but the meat inside is quite tender. I actually like it. We're also noticing that there are some organs and bones. Yeah, yeah and strange things inside our Cuy. It is very much cooked as it is and you eat it as it is presented. Yes, that is how you have Cuy in Peru.
So now the verdict. If you saw Cuy on a menu would you order it again? I'm not necessarily sure I would just because it is a bit expensive and I think that if you were to have something like chicken or something else you might get a little bit more meat. But I'm really glad I tried it. It tasted honestly better than I expected and uh yeah if you're Peru definitely try it though at a least once.

These are some really easy ways to keep an eye on your guinea pigs' health. Guinea Pigs are prone to a variety of illnesses and often do a very good job of hiding the fact they’re sick. Here are 5 simple ways you can keep an eye on their health and hopefully catch issues before they become serious. 1: Regular Weight Checks It’s a good idea to weigh your pigs at least once a week. Use a set of kitchen scales on a flat, hard surface with something to stand the piggies on. We used a bowl, some people suggest a tube, others just put a plastic container on top. Guinea Pigs are prone to a variety of illnesses and often do a very good job of hiding the fact they’re sick. Here are 5 simple ways you can keep an eye on their health and hopefully catch issues before they become serious.
1: Regular Weight Checks
It’s a good idea to weigh your pigs at least once a week. Use a set of kitchen scales on a flat, hard surface with something to stand the piggies on. We used a bowl, some people suggest a tube, others just put a plastic container on top. Make sure you account for the weight of whatever you put the pigs in by either setting the weight to zero before putting the pigs in, or weighing the container and removing that number from the results. Slight changes in weight are fine, but drastic weight loss is generally a bad sign.
2. Check their pee
This is a lot easier if you use fleece bedding. Check around their cage, or wherever they have floor time, to see if there are any chalky white stains — this is usually bladder sludge. It’s often a good indication they’ve got too much calcium in their diet, so be sure to assess what you’re feeding them and change accordingly. Bladder sludge can be an early warning sign of bladder stones, so this is best addressed as soon as you notice it.
3. Physical exams
Every now and then when you pick up your pigs for hugs, or just to take them out of the cage, it’s a good idea to give them a quick once-over. Check their fur for mites, lice, or sudden fur loss, which can be symptom of a wide variety of issues and should be examined by a vet ASAP. Check their noses for crusty buildups, which are a good sign of infection, and while you’re there check their teeth to make sure they’re not overgrown. Lastly make sure their nails are kept reasonably short to prevent in-growing.
4. Listen out
Changes in a piggy’s sounds can sometimes indicate respiratory problems — however our Elsa pig was unable to wheek properly when we got her, which had us worried, but the vet said she was healthy and it was likely a birth defect. Also listen out for pigs squeaking when going to the toilet — it shouldn’t hurt, and if the pig is audibly having difficulty it’s a good sign that something’s wrong and they need a checkup.
5. Watch their Behaviour
Any major, unexplained change in piggy behaviour is worth checking out. If your pig is less active, or eating less, or sleeping more, it can be a good sign your pig is either depressed or very unwell, and you should see a vet. You also need to be aware if your pigs are starting to fight a lot; this isn’t necessarily a health issue, but can quickly lead to one if they injure each other.
Make a habit of performing these five simple checks and you’ll hopefully end up with much happier, healthy pigs!

According to a survey of world cities by the Intelligence Unit of The Economist, Port Moresby is one of the world's least livable cities (ranked 139 of 140 cities rated).
Although Port Moresby is surrounded by Central Province, of which it is also the capital, it is not part of that province, but forms the National Capital District.

Port Moresby Nature Park (formerly The National Botanical Gardens) A must for the visitor. Located next to University of Papua New Guinea, it has some amazing examples of PNG wildlife such as birds of paradise, cassowaries, tree kangaroos, multiple wallaby species, and many other native bird species. Lush, tropical and well kept gardens. A great break from the dry, dusty surrounds and bustle of the capital city. If you are lucky you might catch a wedding while you are there as some locals like to conduct the ceremony in the gardens.
Port Moresby Golf Club A nice golf course located right across from the government buildings. The prices are quite acceptable for visitors. Be careful, crocodiles inhabit the water holes of the golf course. The main building has a nice restaurant where one can have lunch and have a few SP beers (South Pacific beers) after a round of golf.
The Ela Beach Craft Market Run by the Ela Murray International School and held on the last Saturday of each month, this market brings together local artifacts from all over Papua New Guinea. An easy way to get some beautiful carvings, handwoven baskets, or any of a number of other things to bring home as souvenirs.
Touaguba Hill Perhaps not so much to see, but this is where the ambassadorial residences are located and is also where many of the well-to-do expats and locals live. There is a nice view from the top of the hill overlooking the centre of the city and the ocean.
Moitaka Wildlife Sanctuary, Sir Hubert Murray Highway. The Moitaka Wildlife Sanctuary is now closed for re-development.
Hiri Moale Festival. This takes place on the weekend of PNG's Independence Day in mid-September. The centrepiece is a race of up to 100 traditional Lakatoi canoes, recalling the sea voyages undertaken by the Motuan people from the Port Moresby area who exchanged sago and clay pots with the people of neighbouring Gulf Province. The departure of the canoes from Port Moresby's Ela Beach is really spectacular. The Festival is the city's main cultural show with traditional performances, as well as the canoes.

Papua New Guinea Travel Video - Travelling in PNG can be challenging. With almost no Travelism infrastructure and limited information available in books and on websites, it can feel like youre stepping into the great unknown. But this is exactly why travellers find this country so compelling. Nothing is contrived for Travelists and every experience is authentic - even the main island of Bougainville is a largely DIY travel experience. The striking natural beauty and myriad complex cultures offer some riveting and truly life-affirming experiences. The island of New Guinea, of which Papua New Guinea is the eastern part, is only one-ninth as big as Australia, yet it has just as many mammal species, and more kinds of birds and frogs. PNG is Australias biological mirror-world. Both places share a common history going back tens of millions of years, but Australia is flat and has dried out, while PNG is wet and has become mountainous. As a result, Australian kangaroos bound across the plains, while in PNG they climb in the rainforest canopy.
For a glimpse into PNGs fascinating tribal cultures, the Highlands is where you should head (the town of Tari is a good place to see traditional Huli wigmen), while the Central, Oro Milne Bay Provinces are home to gorgeous reefs and historic wartime sites - including the countrys foremost attraction, the Kokoda Track. Also part of these eastern provinces, and about as far off the beaten track as you can get, the DEntrecasteaux Islands are like the land that time forgot, mountainous, jungly and totally undeveloped. The gritty capital Port Moresby, on the other hand, is big and sprawling and even a bit intimidating until you get under its skin and see past the bad press.
PNG is one of earths megadiverse regions, and it owes much of its diversity to its topography. The mountainous terrain has spawned diversity in two ways: isolated mountain ranges are often home to unique fauna and flora found nowhere else, while within any one mountain range you will find different species as you go higher. In the lowlands are jungles whose trees are not that different from those of Southeast Asia. Yet the animals are often startlingly different -- cassowaries instead of tapirs, and marsupial cuscus instead of monkeys.
The greatest diversity of animal life occurs at around 1500m above sea level. The ancestors of many of the marsupials found in these forests were derived from Australia some five million years ago. As Australia dried out they vanished from that continent, but they continued to thrive and evolve in New Guinea, producing a highly distinctive fauna. Birds of paradise and bowerbirds also abound there, and the forest has many trees typical of the forests of ancient Gondwana. As you go higher the forests get mossier and the air colder. By the time you have reached 3000m above sea level the forests are stunted and wreathed in epiphytes. Its a formation known as elfin woodland, and in it one finds many bright honeyeaters, native rodents and some unique relics of prehistory, such as the giant long-beaked echidna. Above the elfin woodland the trees drop out, and a wonderland of alpine grassland and herbfield dominates, where wallabies and tiny birds, like the alpine robin, can often be seen. It is a place where snow can fall and where early morning ice coats the puddles.
