“Zindagi”(1976) was directed by Ravi Tandon for Vikram Movies International, Bombay. This social movie had Mala Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra, Mausami Chatterji, Anil Dhawan, Aruna Irani, Rakesh Pandey, Alka, A K Hangal, Deven Verma, Manmohan, Yunus Parwez, Leela Mishra, Sajjan, Praveen Paul, Brahm Bhardwaj, Chaman Puri, Padmini Kolhapure, Master Abbas, H L Pardesi, Chandu, Vandana Shashtri, Vikas Anand, Baldev Trehan, Jerry Raja, Nitin , Hemant, and friendly apperances were made by Keshto Mukherji, Ifthikar and Vijay Dutt.

HFGK counts the songs as song number 1, 2(a), (b) and 2. This confusion made us believe that we had YIPPEED this movie when we discussed two songs from the movie. Just now H M Aparna pointed it out to me that there were four songs in this movie. When I checked up, I realised that song number 2 (a) and (b) were two parts of a multiple version song and they had already been discussed. That left song mentioned as song number 2 in HFGK. This song is sung by Lata. Amit Khanna is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

This song is picturise as a family get together song where Mausami Chatterji is seen lip syncing this song in the presence of almost the entire star cast of the movie.🙂

With this song, “Zindagi”(1976) now ACTUALLY joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowldgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.

“Mehndi”(1947) was directed by Sibtain Fazli for Fazli Films, Bombay. The movie had Nargis, Begam Para, Murad, Ghori, Jillobai, Jaani babu, Protima Devi, Chacha Premi, Anwari, Zaki, Baby Shyama etc in it.

There were eight songs in this obscure movie. Here is the third song from “Mehndi”(1947) to appear in the blog. HFGK is silent about the identity of the singer. Uploader of this song has mentioned Zeenat Begam as the singer. Towards the end of the song, one can hear a male voice as well. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identity of this male voice.

Sagar Nizami is the lyricist of this “remonstrating with the Almighty” genre of song. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics of the song. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections as applicable.

Hullo to all Atulwaasis

This post should have ideally appeared yesterday. But due to various reasons it remained unsent and the result is that we missed wishing a superstar who is first and foremost an actor; very versatile and untypecasted –much like the actor who we remembered on 6th November.

I spent most of yesterday hunting the various TV and radio channels to see if there were any special programmes on this actor of actors. In fact late in the evening my husband too asked how we also had missed the date. As the Hindi saying goes “Der aaye durust aaye” (late coming repaired coming🙂 ) or its English equivalent- “better late than never”. Hope this post rectifies the situation and here we are wishing this much loved actor a belated happy birthday.

He is an actor first and then went on to be a screen writer, director, producer, singer, choreographer, lyricist, philanthropist and dancer. No I am not talking of our Kishore Kumar. I am talking of Parthasarathy. Has anyone heard this name? He has won several Indian film awards including three National Film Awards and 19 Filmfare Awards. With seven submissions he has starred in the highest number of films submitted by India for the Academy Award Best Foreign Language Film. He was awarded the Padmashri in 1990 and Padma Bhushan in 2014.

After several projects as a child, his breakthrough as a lead actor came in the 1975 drama Apoorva Raagangal (1975), in which he played a rebellious youth in love with an older woman. He won his first National Film Award for his portrayal of a guileless schoolteacher who cares for a childlike amnesiac in Moondram Pirai (1983). Ahh! Now I can see the light of recognition in all eyes- yes we are talking of an actor who has been Chachi 420 or has portrayed the Matunga don of yesteryears Varadarajan Mudaliar or is known to have experimented with a full length silent film in this age of talkie films. He was Vasu to K. Viswanath’s Sapna in 1981. He has tried his hand at doing many double roles but his act as four look alike- separated at birth Quadruplets was a blast of a movie in Tamil. He has also tried doing 10 distinct roles in the 2008 release Dashavataram.

To wish him on his birthday which was yesterday I had a vast directory of songs to choose from and I have taken the easy way out by writing out the lyrics (one of the many songs that are by heart for that generation of HFM lovers) from his very first film in Hindi as lead actor.

The movie had him play a South Indian- Tamilian to be exact- who can’t understand Hindi. And this song is his effort to impress his girl and try and get his feeling across. The song was penned by Anand Bakshi –must have been a stroke of genius to have strung this song together. Laxmikant- Pyarelal were the music directors and playbacks were Anuradha Paudwal and S.P. Balasubramaniam.

Here is wishing Kamal Hassan a belated 63rd birthday.

Hindi talkies got their start in the 1930s. Hindi Film Music, which started with them, took their own time to find their bearings. Their transition phase lasted several years when they underwent many changes (some of them path breaking ones) before HFM finally found their feet and settled down and got consolidated by 1940s.

I regard this transition phase of Hindi film music as the phase where solid foundation was laid off that paved the way for the take off stage for the golden period of Hindi film music of the 50s and 60s.

I had already discussed it in one of my earlier articles that new playback singers and new music directors joined the Hindi film industry in the 1940s seeing the potential for a good musical career in it.

The 1940s was also a decade which saw some uncertainties for the film industry in general and Hindi film industry in particular. Two events in the 1940s affected the Hindi film industry badly. In the wake of the World War-II (1939-45), there was restriction on the use of raw film stock for a full length film. Some of the films during this period remained incomplete or struggled to finish the shooting due to the shortage of raw film stock and consequently very high cost of acquiring raw film stock in the black market. The partition of the country in 1947 also badly affected the films that were on the floor in 1947 due to two-way migration of actors and film crews.

During the scouting of rare film songs of the 1940s, I observed that many films that were released in 1947 and 1948 were unknown to me. It appears that these were the films whose shootings had to be completed in a hurry to beat the partition woes and were released without much publicity. Such films were probably released only in a few film distribution territories. This could be one of the reasons why the films did not fare well at the box office.

One of such films which I came to know recently was FARZ (1947). The film was produced under the banner of New Hindustan Pictures and was directed by Niranjan. The star cast included Ragini, Sudhir, Chand Burq, Agha, Fareeda. Leela etc. I have no idea about the film’s story. How obscure this film was can be gauged by the fact that all the nine songs of the film have no information about the singers as well as lyricists. But some of the songs from this film are very melodious.

I am presenting the first songs ‘o nargis pyaare’ to appear in the Blog which is a rare one in the sense that the song was not available on YT until I uploaded the same. The names of the singer as well as lyricist are not available. From the voice, I have guessed that voice is that of Dilshad Begum. One of the commentators on my video upload of the song has confirmed that the voice is indeed that of Dilshad Begum. All the songs of the film were set to music by K S Sagar, a name I heard for the first time.

With this song, the film FARZ (1947) makes its debut in the Blog.

Today’s song is from Safar-46. It was a Filmistan presentation which was the first film of C.Ramchandra in this company.

C.Ramchandra had worked in Jayant Desai Productions for the previous three years. He gave 5 jubilee films, Bhaktaraj-43,Zabaan-43, Manorama-44, Lalkaar-44, and Samrat Chandragupta-45 for this production house. He was getting only Rs.300 as salary. He had got married and needed more money now.

He came to know that K.L.Saigal was to come to Bombay from Calcutta to work in a Jayant Desai film. He was quite excited. However his joy was shortlived when he heard that composer Lal Mohammed ( assistant of Ghulam Haider in Lahore) was invited to give music to the Saigal film. He was terribly hurt. He went to Jayant Desai, the owner and asked for a raise in salary. C Ramchandra wanted Rs. 1000 pm, but Desai was prepared to raise his salary only upto Rs. 600. Finally C Ramchandra left the job, in a fit of rage.

One day he was met by Kavi Pradeep, who was looking for him. He took him to Shashdhar Mukherjee in Filmistan, who offered C Ramchandra a salary of Rs. 1000 pm and C Ramchandra joined Filmistan.

C Ramchnadra had heard quite a lot abot S.Mukherjee, who had a string of successful films behind him like, Kangan, Bandhan, Sansar, Kismet etc. A towering person like Himanshu Roy had guided him in the prestigious Bombay Talkies. Shashadhar Mukherjee ( 29-9-1909 to 3-11-1990) was a very clever person. He was a good judge of people. He had understood the fundamental truth for a successful film-a sound plausible story base and he was very careful about it. Filmistan had employed efficient and eminent writers like Kavi Pradeep, P.L.Santoshi, G.S.Nepali, Shahid Lateef, Saadat Hasan Manto etc. He consulted other literary giants also whenever needed. He always thought about what the public wanted and he offered them that. That was the secret of his success.

Identification and selection of the right personnel went a long way in the success of ilmistan. He recruited C.Ramchandra to Filmistan, as he was fully aware of his talent and capability.

C Ramchandra’s first film in Filmistan proved to be his best film so far. Not only it completed a Silver jubilee, but its songs like, ‘ kabhi yaad karke, gali paar karke’ and ‘ Chhoti sethaani ji ‘ etc became very popular. This film became the beginning of C Ramchnadra’s march towards the Number One position among music directors of HFM.

When I talk about film Safar-46,I invariably remember the film ” Maine Pyar kiya”-89. There are many similarities in both films.

First, both films were made by Big banners like Filmistan(safar-46) and Rajashri (Maine Pyar Kiya-89).

Secondly, the lead pair in both films were unknown and New comers. It was just the second film of Salman Khan-the First film as a Hero. His Heroine Bhagyashree (Patwardhan) was making her Debut with the film Maine Pyar kiya-89. In Safar-46, the Heroine Shobha was totally unknown and she was making her a Debut there. For Kanu Roy, this was the first film as a Hero.

The name Kanu Roy is generally confused with composer Kanu Roy. Actor Kanu Roy was a different person.

Kanu Roy (the Actor) was in reality a name for Nalini Ranjan Roy, born on 9-12-1912 at Jabalpore. He was very fond of acting and so landed at Bombay Talkies,a company started by two Benagalees- Himanshu Roy and Devika Rani. Those days many people from Bengal used to come to Bombay Talkies, but only the capable ones like Amiya Chakravarty, Shashadhar Mukherjee or Ashok Kumar etc could make their careers here. Kanu Roy started his acting career from the film Basant-1942. His name Nalini was sounding like a Girl’s name in Bombay ( there were already half a dozen Nalinis working in films those days), so it was changed and he opted for Kanu, his pet name in the house. Thus Kanu Roy came into films. Due to his good looks, he even became a lead actor in a few films. Nazrana-46 (UR) was one such film where he was working opposite Kamini Kaushal. Kanu Roy worked in about 40 odd films from 1942 to 1983 ( kisi se naa kehna). Kanu Roy also left Bombay Talkies along with S.Mukherjee and others and joined Filmistan. He was in many Filmistan films like, Munim ji, Nastik, Naagin, Jagriti etc. He acted in a Bangla film ‘Samar’too in 1950.

Kanu Roy (the Composer) gave music to very few films like Uski Kahaani-66, Anubhav-71, Avishkar-74, Tumhara Kallu-76, Grih pravesh-79, Mayuri-81 and Shyamla-79 which was re-censored in 1981 as Woh phir naa aayee. Some people and sites describe him as Geeta Dutt’s brother, but he was not her brother. Her brother was Mukul Roy. Kanu Roy, the composer died in Bombay on 20-12-1981.

Thirdly, the Director of Maine Pyar Kiya, Sooraj Barjatya was making his Debut with this film. ( Later on he made Hits like, Hum apke hai kaun and Hum saath saath hai etc.). For film Safar-46, the Director was Bibhuti Mitra-an import from Calcutta. It was just his second film. His first film ‘ Angoothis’-43 was a resounding Flop. Actually Ashok Kumar was its Hero and when Angoothi was released Ashok’s film Kismet was making records all over India. Film Angoothi ran only for 3 days and it was then withdrawn from theatres. Normally, in Film Industry,an unsuccessful Director is not touched even with a bargepole, but S. Mukherjee selected him as a Director.

Lastly, the Music Director for Maine Pyar kiya-89 was Ram-Laxman, hardly a known name at all. For Safar-46,C.Ramchandra ws selected. he had done 10 C grade films and just 5 social films till then and his name was not yet become famous. In spite of this S.Mukherjee took the risk and trusted his talent, which he had judged correctly.

Despite the Actors, MDs, Director and the lead pair being either Unknown, making a Debut or less known, both the films became Hits- only because of Music. Both Music Directors, C.Ramchandra as well as Ram-Laxman became famous overnight and this became virtually the starting point of their ascent to the Top of HFM. What happened first with Safar-46 repeated itself after 43 years in the success of Maine Pyar Kiya-89 !!!

Safar-46 was a film that came up before the entry of Lata in C Ramchnadra’s career ( and life). Those days Binapani Mukherjee was his lead singer. The name Binapani is not understood by many. It is not Bina=without and Pani=water. The real meaning is Bina=Veena and Pani=Hands =One who holds Veena in her hands i.e. Saraswati.

Binapani was born on 17-10-1925,in a music loving family of Calcutta.Initial music training was by her grandfather Sheetal chandra mukherjee and and later from ustad Sageer Khan of Rampur.

C.Ramchandra gave Binapani Mukherji her playback singing break in “Muskurahat”-43. Her first song was-‘Hans le gaa le…’. It was a duet with CR. Then came Majdoor, Eight days, Darban, Rangbhumi, but she became famous after ‘Safar’-46.

Her most popular song-‘kabhi yaad kar ke,gali paar kar ke,chali aana hamare angana…’ was from this film, which was a duet with C Ramchandra. She also sang in Leela, Mulakat, Shahnayi, Samrat Ashok, Satyanarayan, Raaz ,Rumaal, Asra, Abla, Bhikari, Fariyad, Laajawab, Ghayal etc. Her last film was Gyan Dutt’s ‘Ghayal’-51.

Her voice was very sweet and was suitable for sad songs. It was somewhere between Uma Devi and Shamshad begum’s voice. She sang under C Ramchandra, Khemchand Prakash, Gyan Dutt, Hansraj Behl, Sardar Malik, Anil Biswas, S D Burman, H P Das, Premnath, Gulshan Sufi, Khursheed khan etc. etc.

After playback singing, she retired from film singing and taught music to aspirants throughout her unmarried life. She was staying in Bombay, with her brother.

There were 10 songs in Safar-46. Today’s song is the 6th song from the movie to be posted here. This is a typical C. Ramchandra style song sung by Chitalkar himself with Binapani Mukherjee. Let us now enjoy this song.

How many songs do we listen to during our lifetime? And how many of them do we actually remember? How many of them can we reel off or list out if asked to do so ?

It should lead to some interesting results if some reseach minded individual decides too carry our a research on the above topic.

The researcher may also like to go into details viz. how many songs out of all these songs are such songs that we remember almost verbatim.

The results of above study may turn out to be different for a group of ‘normal music lovers’ and for a control group of music lovers viz. ‘music lovers who are connected with a blog like ASAD’ or who are aware of HFGK and who know that the HFM has over 40K songs if calculated since 1930s to 1980s.

My own take on this matter is that the songs that we are exposed to throughout our life stays with us, either in the conscious part of our memory in the sub conscous part, depending on several factors, viz. how those songs have influenced us, etc.

Our of the songs that we are exposed to, we may find some songs motivating/ inspiring/ refreshing and we may actively seek out such songs to listen to. Keeping such songs with you and listening to them is one thing, which is not a challenge now a days. If one is a fan of ‘radio’ then finding one of your favourite song being broadcast on radio becomes a more rewarding experience because you cannot control which songs are going to be played on radio and so you do not know which song is going to be the next.

Sometimes some situations, incidences or some peculiar happenings in our lives may bring a song to our lips and we may start humming a song that would otherwise be lying dormant in our memory.

The song under discussion is one such song which I do not remember when I heard it last, but I found myself breaking into this song a couple of months back when I was staying at Khandwa (in a Hotel in the same area of ‘Gouri Kunj’).

I have neither watched this song nor its movie earlier. So I searched for this song, its movie and later on checked up with the blog to see if it has been posted here. I was pleasantly surprised to note that this song was not yet covered in the blog. It came as a pleasant surprise to me because it gave me the opportunity to share it.

So here is this wonderful song sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle from the 1960 movie – ‘Apna Haath Jagannaath’. This was the only song left over from the movie. So it gives me the additional bonus of being able to ensure that the movie gets YIPPEED with this song.

The lyrics of this song were written by Kaifi Azmi who penned all the eights songs (including today’s) of this movie and music is composed by S.D.Burman.
Seven songs of this movie have already been posted earlier on this blog.

This movie was directed by Mohan Saigal for Delux Films, Bombay. Mohan Saigal was also the producer of this movie.
It had Kishore Kumar, Sayeeda Khan, Leela Chitnis, Nazir Hussain, Jagdeo, Nand Kishore, Savita Chatterjee, Baby Devika, Shivraj, Rashid Khan, Brahm Bharadwaj, Ramlal, Shyam Lal, Daya Devi, Narbada Shankar, Moolchand Kapoor, Ravi Kant, Uma Dutt, Prem and V.Gopal.

This movie was passed by censor board on 20.02.1960.

With this song,”Apna Haath Jagannaath”(1960) joins the ‘list of movies-all songs covered’.🙂

Here is the second song from “Mehndi”(1947) to appear in the blog. This “missing the beloved” song is as obscure as the movie itself. It is sung by Shanshad Begam. Sagar Nizami is the lyricist of this melancholic song.
