How Good Was PRIME Bobby Orr Actually?
#bobbyOrr #nhl #hockey
This is Bobby Orr. He’s a three time MVP and an eight time all-star. He had six straight seasons scoring over 100 points and is the only player to win four major NHL awards in one season. He revolutionized the game of hockey and did it all before hanging up his blades at the tender age of 30 years old.
So just how good was prime Bobby Orr actually?
Bobby grew up in Parry Sound, Ontario. He was severely undersized as a youngster, but began playing hockey at the age of 5. He was small, but a gifted skater. By the time he was 14, a scout for the Boston Bruins made arrangements for him to play puck for the Oshawa Generals, a team in the Metro Junior A League. The Generals were funded by the Bruins at the time. The move allowed the teen to continue to live with his p...

This video is the ESPN SportsCentury on Bobby Orr, the Hall of Fame Boston Bruins defenseman, considered by many the greatest hockey player of all-time.
The extremely well-done documentary, which aired on ESPN Classic and is narrated by Chris Fowler, has been out there on YouTube. But I wanted a copy without commercials, and once I had that, figured, 'Why not post it?'.
Anyway, copyright ESPN. I don't claim the rights to, and don't profit from, this video. I just posted it for historical and educational purposes, and for those who will enjoy it as much as I did.

Bobby Orr ragging the puck Incomparable skating by the Bruins Hall of Fame defenseman
This is a short video showing the greatest hockey player of all time, Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins, ragging the puck.
The first clip is from a CBC broadcast, with Bill Hewitt doing play by play. The rest are from WSBK TV-38 in Boston, with Don Earle on the calls.
Orr, the two-time Stanley Cup winning Hall of Fame defenseman, used his unmatched skating, scoring, and playmaking to revolutionize the position. His fluid-yet-powerful strides and deft moves, learned as a youngster during outdoor games in winters on Parry Sound in Ontario, enabled him to make thrilling rushes end-to-end as a pro. And when needed, he could become a one-man penalty kill or run out the clock at game's end.
In this video he plays keep-away from the Maple Leafs, Penguins, Golden Seals, Rangers, and Blackhawks, demon...

In this video he plays keep-away from the Maple Leafs, Penguins, Golden Seals, Rangers, and Blackhawks, demonstrating more speed and skill than all the other players - fine skaters themselves.
What a pleasure it was indeed for Bostonians at that time to "look at him go!", as Earle said, each fan glad they were there to witness it.
(Sorry to keep updating, but every new clip I find is gold, Jerry, gold!)
