Canberra-based Pat Madden has launched Urban Meat Co, a website selling premium Australian meat which wasn't previously available in Canberra.

Madden, worked as a chef in kitchens in Sydney and London for a number of years, before returning to his hometown of Canberra four years ago. It was while working at Smith's of Smithfield in London that he developed a love of high quality meat.

"Since I've been back in Canberra, [and] just trying to source that really high end meat, I always struggled," he said.

"My partner is quite a meat head as well so we were going backwards and forwards to Sydney and going to different suppliers and we thought, 'why don't we try and do this as a business and give everyone access to the sort of meat the top restaurants are selling?' That was the philosophy behind it."

Madden launched the site with a range of "statement pieces" of meat, from Rangers Valley, Cape Grim and O'Connor beef, with plans to expand to include other Australian produce.

They have partnered with Bayldon Meats in Queuanbeyan to deliver the produce, with deliveries three times a week. And it's delivered in striking, eco-friendly packaging.

"It's beautiful meat and we kind of think we're giving it the credit that it deserves - it comes like a gift," said Madden.

Delivery is currently only available in Canberra, with plans to expand into Victoria in 2017.
