Pak-Afghan skirmish at Torkham Border
TORKHAM: Pakistani and Afghan security forces continued intermittent clashes overnight at Torkham border crossing resulting in injuries to 16 Pakistani citizens, including six border security personnel, officials said on Monday.
The injured personnel were taken to Landi Kotal hospital for treatment. A curfew is also in effect between Torkham and Landi Kotal bazaar as the area falls within range of mortar shells, said security officials.
The injured security personnel include a major and a lieutenant. Meanwhile, 10 civilians were also injured in the cross border firing by Afghan forces.
The injured civilians were shifted to local hospitals for treatment.
While Afghan officials claimed that one Afghan soldier was killed and six were wounded.

Torkham
Torkham (Pashto: تورخم Tūrkham) is one of the major border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan, located on the Durand Line border. It connects Nangarhar province of Afghanistan with Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is the busiest port of entry between the two countries, serving as a major transporting, shipping, and receiving site.
Highway 7 connects Torkham to Kabul through Jalalabad. On the Pakistani side, the border crossing is at the end of the N-5 National Highway, which connects it to Peshawar in the east and further connects it to Islamabad by other routes.
The Afghan Border Police and Pakistan's Frontier Corps are the main agencies for controlling Torkham. They are backed by the Pakistani and Afghan Armed Forces. There is also some presence of NATO forces on the Afghan side of the crossing, mainly personnel of the U.S. Armed Forces. The American Forward Operating Base Torkham (FOB Torkham) is located a few miles from the crossing in Nangarhar province. Torkham belongs to the Momand Dara district of Nangarhar.

Pakistan Army
Pakistan Army (Urdu: پاک فوج Pak Fauj (IPA: pɑk fɒ~ɔd͡ʒ); Reporting name: PA) is the land-based service branch of the Pakistan Armed Forces. It came into existence after the independence of Pakistan in 1947. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) it had an active force of approximately 550,000 active personnel and 500,000 reserve personnel as of 2015. The Constitution of Pakistan contains a provision for conscription for times of possible need, but it has never been imposed.
Since its establishment in 1947, the Army (along with its inter–services: the Navy and the Air Force) has been involved in four wars with neighbouring India and several border skirmishes with Afghanistan. Since 1947, it has also maintained a strong presence along with its inter-services in the Arab states during the past Arab-Israeli Wars, and aided the coalition in the first Gulf War. Recently, major joint-operations undertaken by the Army include Operation Zarb-e-Azb Operation Toar-e-Tander (Black Thunderstorm) and Operation Rah-e-Nijat (Path to Salvation).

Pak-Afghan skirmish at Torkham Border TORKHAM: Pakistani and Afghan security forces continued intermittent clashes overnight at Torkham border crossing resulting in injuries to 16 Pakistani citizens, including six border security personnel, officials said on Monday. The injured personnel were taken to Landi Kotal hospital for treatment. A curfew is also in effect between Torkham and Landi Kotal bazaar as the area falls within range of mortar shells, said security officials. The injured security personnel include a major and a lieutenant. Meanwhile, 10 civilians were also injured in the cross border firing by Afghan forces. Throughout history it has been an important trade route between Central Asia and South Asia and a strategic military location. The actual pass summit is 5 km inside Pakistan at Landi Kotal. The pass cuts through the Safed Koh mountains which are a far southeastern extension of the Hindu Kush range. It is about 5 km from the Pakistan border. Going northwest from the eastern end in Pakistan, the pass starts from near Jamrud (15 km west of Peshawar) and ends west of Torkham, Afghanistan, a winding road of 48 km. The route passes Fort Maude and Ali Masjid to reach the narrowest point of the pass, just 15 m wide. The summit is at Landi Kotal, followed by a steep decline to Michni Kandao, Landi Khana and the Afghan border just east of Torkham. Here the gradient becomes easier as the pass exits at Haft Chah onto the Dakka plain. From Dakka, the Kabul River flows back to Peshawar through the Loe Shilman Gorge, a less direct and more difficult route, but the one chosen by Alexander the Great when he crossed over into South Asia in 326 BC in an attempt to invade the Indus Valley. Jamrud is at an elevation of 491 m (1610 feet), while the summit at Landi Kotal is 1070 m (3509 feet).
