Solidarity with Iran

The following resolution is from the 6th Congress of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization:

The Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) stands in solidarity with the Iranian people against U.S. imperialist intervention in their country. The FRSO recognizes the right of all nations to self-determination without military, economic, or political interference. We condemn U.S. efforts to undermine the Iranian government through acts like funding opposition parties and groups; military posturing, such as positioning military battleships near to Iran’s coast; veiled political threats and false propaganda about the latest elections; sanctions; and all forms of intimidation.

Tehran, Iran – Millions of Iranians rallied on Feb. 11 to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the revolution that overthrew the hated U.S.-backed Pahlavi monarchy. In Tehran a massive crowd of 5 million took to the streets, while rallies were held in 800 other cities around the country.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammad Khazaee, commented that the enormous demonstrations showed “the nation’s determination in maintaining national unity…in the realization of political, economic and social developments and particularly in advancing civilian nuclear technology.” Addressing the propaganda in Western media that attempts to show the Iranian government as unpopular or weakened by the opposition movement, Khazaee said, “The Islamic Republic has now become a powerful and strategic country, where people enjoy a strong sense of unity and solidarity. It is a fact that Western powers must learn to deal with.”

Iran: U.S. imperialism drops another rock on its feet

The following analysis is from the website of the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist). See also “Imperialism and Iran’s Election” (June 25, 2009) from Fight Back! News, the newspaper of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

Washington has spent the whole of 2009 trying, and failing, to compromise Iranian sovereignty and drive Iran from her chosen path of development.

It did its damnedest to use the June presidential elections to replace Ahmadinejad with Moussavi, a leader more in line with imperialist interests. When America’s favoured candidate was roundly defeated at the polls, Washington claimed, without a shred of evidence, that the election was a fix, and on the back of this Big Lie sought to engineer yet another ‘colour revolution’.

When this too failed – thwarted by widespread popular support for Ahmadinejad’s policies on national sovereignty, energy security, state ownership of key economic sectors and assistance to the poor – Washington predictably reverted to its old trick of crying ‘Fire!’ outside the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Imperialism and Iran’s Elections

Commentary by Kosta Harlan

A struggle has broken out over the results of Iran’s presidential elections, held Friday June 12, which resulted in the apparent landslide victory of incumbent President Ahmadinejad. On Friday night, before the results had been announced, the main opposition candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, declared himself the winner. The following day, Iran’s election commission announced that Ahmadinejad had won with 62% of the vote. Mousavi responded with allegations of vote-rigging. This set into motion a chain of events that has resulted in hundreds of thousands coming out to the streets in protest. Some of the protests turned into riots, with protesters attacking police, government offices and banks and burning cars. 19 people are reported to have died in clashes with the government.
