Occupation of Iraq to continue, we must oppose it: Interview with anti-war leader Meredith Aby

The following interview is from Fight Back! News:

Fight Back!: Many are saying that the occupation in Iraq is coming to an end. What is your view?

Meredith Aby: In a recent speech President Obama claimed, “Our commitment in Iraq is changing – from a military effort led by our troops to a civilian effort led by our diplomats.” But 50,000 U.S. troops and tens of thousands of contractors is an occupation plain and simple. The Democratic Party is worried about the mid-term elections this November and their base has strong opposition to the war in Iraq. The president is decreasing the amount of U.S. troops there as a crumb to anti-war Democrats. However, it is not a significant change in U.S. policy. Obama’s foreign policy is the same now as it was a year ago; he has escalated the war in Afghanistan and is keeping enough troops in Iraq to keep the country under the thumb of U.S. imperialism, even though it isn’t the focus of current U.S. war efforts.

The Land of Medea: PKK guerrilla base in northern Iraq

The following article by Namo Abdulla is from the bourgeois press, the New York Times At War blog. This post should not be taken as an endorsement of the views of the New York Times, but rather is posted here in an effort to gain a better understanding of the contradictions at work in the region:

Bouzan Tekin, deputy leader of the PKK with female leaders at a news conference.

QANDIL, Iraq — The Land of the Medea is a nickname to a group of villages located here in the Qandil mountains — in the semiautonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq — where the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) are active. The name comes from the ancient kingdom of the Medes.

It is a place without a government, and without disorder. It is, perhaps, in many ways, an ideal example of what philosophical anarchists wish to see in a larger community.

The PKK rebels, who are the sole maintainers of security, hold a Marxist view of the state: It is a tool of the bourgeoisie to suppress the working class.

Leaked video shows U.S. military murdering over one dozen Iraqis
Reuters journalists and children among the dead and wounded
By Kosta Harlan | April 5, 2010

The organization WikiLeaks released a leaked video today showing footage of U.S. soldiers indiscriminately gunning down Iraqis from an Apache helicopter gunship. In the video, U.S. soldiers are heard laughing while shooting down over a dozen Iraqis, including two Reuters journalists. After the initial shootings, a van stops by to pick up one of the survivors who is crawling away. As Iraqis load the wounded man into the van, the U.S. soldiers open fire again, killing more Iraqis and wounding two young children who were inside the vehicle.

Iraq: Elections under the barrel of the occupier’s gun

The following analysis by Kosta Harlan is from Fight Back! News:

Parliamentary elections took place in occupied Iraq on March 8 as rockets and mortars slammed into the Green Zone and U.S. military bases across the country. The U.S. government and its allies in occupied Iraq have hailed the election as a victory for democracy (Newsweek went so far as to write “Victory at last” across the cover of their latest issue), but the reality is anything but. The elections are nothing but a continuation of the same illegal, unjust occupation political process that began when the U.S. invaded and overthrew the anti-imperialist Iraqi government in 2003. The latest election only serves to consolidate the existence of a puppet regime loyal to the U.S. occupation.

A “throng of war protesters swelled Saturday as they marched across the Memorial Bridge.” (AP) The protesters marched on the Pentagon and what followed was a dramatic direct action at Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and KBR, corporations that demonstrators labeled “merchants of death.” The predominantly young crowd continued to grow as the day proceeded. They marched through the Pentagon north Parking Lot and then into downtown Crystal City, where the leading war corporations’ headquarters are located.

White Phosphorus: from Fallujah to Gaza

picasso_guernica2

The word is out that Israel is using white phosphorus against the population of Gaza.

Mao Zedong famously compared the relationship between guerrilla fighters and the population to that between fish and water, saying that the guerrilla must swim amongst the people as the fish does in the water. The only “counterinsurgency” strategy the imperialists and their lackeys have been able to come up with to deal with this is the strategy of “draining the sea”, in other words, killing everyone.

The following videos document the use of this terrible and illegal chemical weapon, which burns the flesh off of human beings much like napalm, in Gaza by Israel and in Fallujah by the U.S., respectively.

The following is from Fight Back! News:

By Kosta Harlan

Vast numbers of Iraqis responded angrily to the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) signed between the United States government and their local allies in the Green Zone. The SOFA will provide a legal basis to continue the U.S. occupation of Iraq when the United Nations Security Council mandate for the occupation expires on Dec. 31, 2008. Hundreds of thousands protested before the agreement was signed and protests are set to continue as the SOFA legislation heads to the puppet parliament for final approval. The Iraqi resistance has also intensified its attacks on the U.S. occupation in response to the agreement.
