Woman Rebel is a film devoid of revolutionary content. Throughout the whole documentary you get to see the hammer and the sickle flag of the CPN (M) only once and fleetingly. Silu, the rebel commander, her brother (a former government soldier) and their parents, and the conflict between them is the real focus of the film. And on top of that, those who have any elementary knowledge of film-making will notice that most of the interviews are “staged.” The Communist Silu is not seen, only the parliamentary Silu is shown. You didn’t really think that HBO was going to air a fact based film of a real Communist subversive movement…

It was still good nonetheless, for a short documentary that is. Though, the battle scenes that were aired on the doc were ones you could find on youtube. So it wasn’t that very well made, & really, I don’t think they wanted it to be too well made in the first place.
Either way, it may garner supporters out of this. Thanks for this.

What a strange summation: The film describes a poor peasant woman who becomes a leading commander of a revolutionary war. And desceibes how her older sister commits suicide because of a forced marriage into an abusive family — because of the complete lack of power for women. the contrast between the feudal oppresssion (of peasants like her parents, and women like her sister) is at the core of the story. And her road (as a revolutionary) in an army dedicated to a radical equaity and the overthrow of the monarchy is very clear.

Is that how you measure the radical content of a piece of art — by how long your favorite iconography is shown?
And besides, don’t dozens of people wear red stars throughout the film? (Are you arguing that the red star doesn’t count, and only the h&s does in your litmus test.)

I think it would be too idealistic to expect the communist manifesto be read on t.v. But you could derive it from the story itself.
Let’s be realistic, the media these days are not allies of Marxists and would not openly show communist propaganda. Most of the time, communism is shown in a military context which alienates ordinary peace-loving people from connecting with the true aim of Marxism.
