Invisible Man is a novel by Ralph Ellison, published by Random House in 1952. It addresses many of the social and intellectual issues facing African-Americans early in the twentieth century, including black nationalism, the relationship between black identity and Marxism, and the reformist racial policies of Booker T. Washington, as well as issues of individuality and personal identity.
Invisible Man won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction in 1953. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Invisible Man nineteenth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
Ellison says in his introduction to the 30th Anniversary Edition that he started to write what would eventually become Invisible Man in a barn in Waitsfield, Vermont in the summer of 1945 while on sick leave from the Merchant Marine. The letters he wrote to fellow novelist Richard Wright as he started working on the novel provide evidence for its political context: the disillusion with the Communist Party that he and Wright shared. In a letter to Wright August 18, 1945, Ellison poured out his anger toward party leaders for betraying Black and Marxist class politics during the war years. "If they want to play ball with the bourgeoisie they needn't think they can get away with it.... Maybe we can't smash the atom, but we can, with a few well chosen, well written words, smash all that crummy filth to hell." In the wake of this disillusion, Ellison began writing Invisible Man, a novel that was, in part, his response to the party's betrayal.

This week, we’re on to reading Ralph Ellison’s great novel about the black experience in America after World War II, Invisible Man. John will teach you about Ellison’s nameless narrator, and his attempts to find his way in a social order that dehumanizes him and renders him invisible at every turn. Ellison’s novel follows its hero from his childhood in the south to his many attempts to make sense of the world in New York City, and it takes him through, explosions, activism, and riots. The Invisible Man Returns is a 1940 American horror science fiction film from Universal. It was written as a sequel to the 1933 film The Invisible Man, which was based on the novel The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells. The studio had signed a multi-picture contract with Wells, and they were hoping that this film would do as well as the first. It would be followed by the comedic The Invisible Woman later the same year. Framed for the murder of his brother, Geoffrey Radcliffe is scheduled to hang. After a visit from his friend Dr. Frank Griffin, he vanishes mysteriously from prison. Police inspector Sampson realizes that Griffin is the brother of the original Invisible Man and has given Geoffrey the formula to aid his escape. Can Geoffrey elude the police dragnet and track down the real murdere...

Verse I:
Me and Pops don’t talk, Moms is sick
Ex-girlfriend says I’m not shit
I can’t never really argue with
Life of a ni**a, wish I could pause this shit
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the nights turn black
And the days be green
Situations make it seem, like I’m losing everything.
In the face of it all
I remain with my name, and my brain, and my boss
I refused to be stopped
My heart speaks wise, Ima trust that shit.
Failure made me fall in love
Depression let me fuck her twice
Envy used to suck my dick
But fuck them souls, I proposed to life.
I’m engaged in the faithful,
Living home with the likes of the grateful.
We the type that’ll fight ‘til we die
With the prize on our mind
If it’s all that it takes to.
Heard every single thing you’ve been wishin’
For, even when it comes to fruition.
You remember how it felt when you didn’t
Live life, you were just existing?
Existing.
[Pause]
Verse II:
I’m a wreck today
Same clothes on as yesterday
Tryin’ to take the pain in my head away
Advil don’t work so I guess that I gotta find a better way
Lookin’ at the keys that I pressed to play
Music take my stress away.
Two dollar bills – what’s left today
Gotta try to make this stretch today.
How did I fall so far?
With my head up in the clouds
And my eyes up in the stars
And my heart down on the ground.
Beat up, bruised, and scarred.
