Robert Towne

Robert Towne

Robert Towne (born Robert Bertram Schwartz; November 23, 1934) is an American screenwriter, producer, director and actor. He was part of the New Hollywood wave of filmmaking. His most notable work was his Academy Award-winning original screenplay for Roman Polanski's Chinatown (1974), which is widely considered one of the greatest movie screenplays ever written. He also wrote its sequel The Two Jakes in 1990, and wrote the Hal Ashby comedy-dramas The Last Detail (1973), and Shampoo (1975), as well as the first two Mission Impossible films (1996, 2000).

Towne has also directed various films such as the sports dramas Personal Best (1982), and Without Limits (1998), the crime thriller Tequila Sunrise (1988), and the romantic crime drama Ask the Dust (2006).

Career

Film

Towne is the author of many notable film scripts, including Chinatown (1974), for which he received an Academy Award; its sequel, The Two Jakes (1990); the Oscar-nominated screenplays The Last Detail and Shampoo; as well as the first two Mission Impossible films. Towne has also a "stellar reputation" in the motion-picture industry as an uncredited script doctor, having worked in this capacity on The Godfather, Bonnie and Clyde, The Parallax View, The Rock and on dozens of other Hollywood films.

Towne, Robert Filmography

Famous quotes by Robert Towne:

"There must have been something inevitable about it because we got it done. I lived with (the book) for 20 years when I didn't write (the adaptation), and when I did write it, I lived with it for the next 10, 12 years."

"Initially I was weary of it. When something is first done you're looking at all the things you wanted there that are not there."

"I started doing it and I couldn't stop. It really tired the patience of the people around me."

"To the extent of wanting me there and wanting to know everything about the scene, I think he realized it was important."

"There was no scene between father and son, and there was a deep-seated need for the two protagonists in the story to face each other with the consequences of what had happened. Now he was able to express to his son that his whole life had been a struggle to prevent this very thing from happening."

"And as far as that goes, when he first started with it he was considering Bob Dylan for Clyde before he did it himself."

"I'm excited and encouraged to see people getting involved with their public lands and forests. We really need the public's help to repair these heavily used recreation sites."

"It was not possible to film in California, because all the areas are heavily built up now. Coming to Cape Town is an invitation to step into the past and recreate Los Angeles of the 1930s."

"Roman is hands-down the best director I've ever worked with, ... But all of the 1970s was a great era because the studios really left you alone. What has come to be called 'independent film,' you could really do within the studio system at that time."

"People who can't think of anything else but whether the person you love is indented or convex should be doomed not to think of anything else but that, and so miss the other ninety-five percent of life."

"You're torn between wanting to fill in all the spaces and knowing that's really going to screw up the screenplay. And yet, how are you going to communicate it to people who really don't understand the process?"

"If you have a good ear for dialogue, you just can't help thinking about the way people talk. You're drawn to it. And the obsessive interest in it forces you to develop it. You almost can't help yourself."

"I think that those are the things that you can uniquely do with film that are difficult to do anywhere else: they can bring a picture to life, give it a natural and historical context and make you feel that everything else is suddenly credible."

"But time has caught up with it and I think vindicated it. Shampoo, too: very dark, very ambitious movie."

"And I think one way or another it's evident to those who work with me that as a writer, a director, a friend, as somebody's there that's very anxious to get the movie made."

"Now they're attracted to one another, but repelled by their ethnic origins, so that there was something to overcome. They had to overcome their own prejudices, which had been imposed by the culture - their own shame at being Mexican and Italian."

"Finally, Colin Farrell showed up on my doorstep, only he wasn't Colin Farrell - he was just this Irish kid who had read the script and wanted to do it."

"It made me alive to the fact that the most important thing sometimes is what isn't said - to prepare for moments of revelation that can be read entirely on actors' faces without dialogue."

GetSportsFocus is presented by: Dr. Arthur J. Ting, MD - Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery FOLLOW US & SUBSCRIBE NOW!!! @GetSportsFocus by: Ally Williams With sole possession of the Diablo Valley League on the line, Northgate High School and Clayton Valley Charter faced off on Thursday afternoon. The Ugly Eagles took advantage of mistakes early and often, beating the Broncos 7-2 and tying up the top of the standings. Clayton Valley Charter put one on the board in the first inning, as Justin Roper led things off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He would score on the first of what would be five errors for Northgate, as Bill Ralston's grounder to second was thrown to an empty first base to give Roper plenty of time to score. The Broncos stopped the damage in the first there, though as a nice relay starting with left fielder Kevin Clancy would get Ralston out at home to end the inning. The Ugly Eagles piled on in the fourth, capitalizing on three errors in the inning. They batted around the order, scoring their final two runs of the frame on a two-run single from James Biles. In the bottom of the inning, Northgate threatened. They scored their first run on a single from Chris Rogan, a diving stop from the shortstop Ralston saved at least one run on the play to keep the bases loaded with one out. From there, the Ugly Eagles were able to turn a double play to end the threat and the inning. Clayton Valley Charter Pitcher Robert Towne kept the Broncos guessing. He threw three shutout innings to begin the game and allowed just two runs on seven hits overall. This game ties the Ugly Eagles with the Broncos up at the top of the Diablo Valley League standings. Clayton Valley Charter will finish league play with two tough matchups against third place College Park - who is just two games back in the win column - while Northgate has one game against Richmond before back-to-back league games against Concord to close out the regular season.
