'Drunk driver' ploughs into pedestrian bridge at 90km/h

An alleged drunk driver has had a lucky escape after crashing his ute into a pedestrian bridge on Sunday night at an estimated 90km/h.

A witness, who lives nearby and heard the crash, said the driver was attempting to cross the narrow pathway above Barridale Drive in Kingsley when he collided with the the footpath barrier.

"There's an underpass underneath Kingsley Drive and they left the gate open, or left a bollard down, and they came through it," she said.

"The driver looked like he was in shock,"

Two men, a 28-year-old passenger and a 23-year-old driver, escaped the crash with only minor injuries.

Police have since charged the driver with driving with a blood-alcohol level in excess of 0.08.

"The guy that does the speed control, he told us this morning that he estimated they were doing about 80 or 90 kilometres when they hit the fence and that the driver actually kept his foot on the accelerator," the witness said.

"Ironically, the accident happened above a children's playground that has little pretend roads and stop signs and give way signs to teach children road rules."
