Haiti (
i/ˈheɪti/; French: Haïti [a.iti]; Haitian Creole: Ayiti [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (French: République d'Haïti; Haitian Creole: Repiblik Ayiti), is a country in the western hemisphere, and is located on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) in size and has an estimated 10.6 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the third-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous TaÃno people, Europeans first became aware of the island on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic. When Columbus first landed in Haiti, he had thought he had found India or Asia. Deciding to establish the first settlement in the area, a contingent of men were left at an outpost christened La Navidad because of the wreck to their sunken flagship, the Santa Maria, that occurred at Christmas, north of what is now Limonade. The island was named Hispaniola and claimed by Spain, which ruled until the early 17th century. Competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France, which named it Saint-Domingue. The development of sugarcane plantations, worked by slaves brought from Africa, led to the colony being among the most lucrative in the world.

Hispaniola
Hispaniola (Spanish: La Española; Latin: Hispaniola; TaÃno: Haiti) is the 22nd-largest island in the world, located in the Caribbean island group, the Greater Antilles. It is the second largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba, and the tenth most populous island in the world.
Two sovereign nations share the 76,192 square kilometres (29,418 sq mi) island. The Dominican Republic with 48,445 square kilometres (18,705 sq mi) is nearly twice as large as its neighbor, Haiti, which contains 27,750 square kilometres (10,710 sq mi). The only other shared island in the Caribbean is Saint Martin, shared between France (Saint-Martin) and the Netherlands (Sint Maarten).
It is the site of the first European settlement in the Americas founded by Christopher Columbus on his voyages in 1492 and 1493.
History
Etymology
The island was called by various names by its native people, the TaÃno Amerindians. When Columbus took possession of the island in 1492, he named it Insula Hispana, meaning "the Spanish Island" in Latin and La Isla Española, meaning "the Spanish Island", in Spanish.Bartolomé de las Casas shortened the name to "Española", and when Pietro Martyr d‘Anghiera detailed his account of the island in Latin, he rendered its name as Hispaniola.

I met this young man in the middle of a gang war in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He showed me around his community for two days, and even though he had tattoos from head to toe and carried a big gun, he showed me a different side of him. Big heart, community man, father that never wanted this life, but it is what he was born into. I don't expect everyone to understand but this news hit me hard, life is not easy and it is not guaranteed in the mean streets of Port-au-Prince Haiti. STORYLINE:
About 150 military police officers from Central America have arrived in Haiti to support the embattled government’s fight against violent gangs that have upended daily life for millions in the Caribbean country.
The deployment of around 75 security officers from Guatemala was greeted Saturday at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince by the Kenyan commander of the U.N.-backed mission, Godfrey Otunge, who for months has been struggling to restore order.
“The gangs have only two choices: surrender, lay down their weapons, and face justice, or face us in the field,� the officer, Godfrey Otunge, said in remarks at a welcoming ceremony.
“With the addition of the Guatemalan and El Salvador forces, the gangs will have nowhere to hide. We will root them out of their enclave.�
A similar-sized contingent, which also included a small number of El Salvadoran forces, traveled aboard a U.S. Air Force aircraft and was greeted Friday by top Haitian officials and U.S. Ambassador Dennis Hankins.
Approximately 400 security officers from Kenya led the international mission to quell the violence before this week's deployment.
The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, and Chad have also pledged personnel, although it remains unclear when they will be deployed.
“For countries who have committed and are yet to deploy their personnel to the MSS mission in Haiti, now is the time to act. Haiti urgently needs your support,� said the Kenyan commander.
Coordinated gang attacks on prisons, police stations, and the primary international airport have escalated in Haiti since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Gangs are estimated to control approximately 85% of the capital.

He showed me around his community for two days, and even though he had tattoos from head to toe and carried a big gun, he showed me a different side of him. Big heart, community man, father that never wanted this life, but it is what he was born into.
I don't expect everyone to understand but this news hit me hard, life is not easy and it is not guaranteed in the mean streets of Port-au-Prince Haiti.
I received the bad news that he was killed in a shoot out with rival gang.

I met this young man in the middle of a gang war in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
He showed me around his community for two days, and even though he had tattoos from head to toe and carried a big gun, he showed me a different side of him. Big heart, community man, father that never wanted this life, but it is what he was born into.
I don't expect everyone to understand but this news hit me hard, life is not easy and it is not guaranteed in the mean streets of Port-au-Prince Haiti.
I received the bad news that he was killed in a shoot out with rival gang.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share a border, and an island. But the two countries are very different today: the Dominican Republic enjoys higher quality of life for many factors than Haiti. I went to this island and visited both countries, to try and understand when and how their paths diverged. And I began to learn how those differences are playing out in the present.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share a border, and an island. But the two countries are very different today: the Dominican Republic enjoys higher quality of life for many factors than Haiti. I went to this island and visited both countries, to try and understand when and how their paths diverged. And I began to learn how those differences are playing out in the present.
Vox Borders is a new international documentary series presented by lululemon, by Emmy-nominated videojournalist Johnny Harris. For this series, Johnny is producing six 10-15 minute documentaries about different borders stories from around the world.

Guys I have to be honest with you in this one. After visiting all 197 countries and thousands of cities around the world, I can say with 100% certainty that Port au Prince, Haiti, takes the crown as THE MOST DANGEROUS. Yes, more than Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Syria and Iraq COMBINED.
I've never experienced before what I just experienced in Haiti... 80% of the city is controlled by violent street gangs, and when we crossed the sketchy checkpoint to enter the biggest slum called Cite Soleil, we had to get permission from the gang-leading chief to enter. I can't make this stuff up.
I'm just glad that I made it out alive and am here to tell this story. My heart aches for the people in Haiti, who are living through this disastrous situation. I hope the country will return to its thriving days like it was a few decades ago. There is so much potential with stunning beaches, smiling faces, and Caribbean vibes.
Thanks for watching - it took my team of 4 and myself more than 3 weeks to get this story edited. My hope is that this video sparks conversations that contribute to a broader understanding and ultimately, a positive change for the future of Haiti.

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M; Recording Studios) "We Are The World 25 For Haiti", in which Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti.
Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici.
The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

STORYLINE:
About 150 military police officers from Central America have arrived in Haiti to support the embattled government’s fight against violent gangs that have upended daily life for millions in the Caribbean country.
The deployment of around 75 security officers from Guatemala was greeted Saturday at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince by the Kenyan commander of the U.N.-backed mission, Godfrey Otunge, who for months has been struggling to restore order.
“The gangs have only two choices: surrender, lay down their weapons, and face justice, or face us in the field,� the officer, Godfrey Otunge, said in remarks at a welcoming ceremony.
“With the addition of the Guatemalan and El Salvador forces, the gangs will have nowhere to hide. We will root them out of their enclave.�
A similar-sized contingent, which also included a small number of El Salvadoran forces, traveled aboard a U.S. Air Force aircraft and was greeted Friday by top Haitian officials and U.S. Ambassador Dennis Hankins.
Approximately 400 security officers from Kenya led the international mission to quell the violence before this week's deployment.
The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, and Chad have also pledged personnel, although it remains unclear when they will be deployed.
“For countries who have committed and are yet to deploy their personnel to the MSS mission in Haiti, now is the time to act. Haiti urgently needs your support,� said the Kenyan commander.
Coordinated gang attacks on prisons, police stations, and the primary international airport have escalated in Haiti since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Gangs are estimated to control approximately 85% of the capital.

It was the single scariest trip of my life. 90% of the city is controlled by ruthless gangs, and going into the slums with Sean was a wild experience. I met this young man in the middle of a gang war in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
He showed me around his community for two days, and even though he had tattoos from head to toe and carried a big gun, he showed me a different side of him. Big heart, community man, father that never wanted this life, but it is what he was born into.
I don't expect everyone to understand but this news hit me hard, life is not easy and it is not guaranteed in the mean streets of Port-au-Prince Haiti.
I received the bad news that he was killed in a shoot out with rival gang.

Haiti (i/ˈheɪti/; French: Haïti [a.iti]; Haitian Creole: Ayiti [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (French: République d'Haïti; Haitian Creole: Repiblik Ayiti), is a country in the western hemisphere, and is located on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) in size and has an estimated 10.6 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the third-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous TaÃno people, Europeans first became aware of the island on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic. When Columbus first landed in Haiti, he had thought he had found India or Asia. Deciding to establish the first settlement in the area, a contingent of men were left at an outpost christened La Navidad because of the wreck to their sunken flagship, the Santa Maria, that occurred at Christmas, north of what is now Limonade. The island was named Hispaniola and claimed by Spain, which ruled until the early 17th century. Competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France, which named it Saint-Domingue. The development of sugarcane plantations, worked by slaves brought from Africa, led to the colony being among the most lucrative in the world.

Hispaniola, An Island Situated Between The Caribbean Sea And The North Atlantic Ocean,west Of Puerto Rico And East Of Cuba And Jamaica. Covering Approximately 76,192 Square Kilometers In Total Surface Area, Hispaniola Is A Part Of The Greater Antilles Group Of Islands, Which Also Includes Cuba, Jamaica, And Puerto Rico.
The Island Is About 650 Km In Length And Has A Maximum Width Of 241 Km.
The Jamaica Channel Separates Hispaniola From The Island Nation Of Jamaica In The Southwest, While The Mona Passage In The East Separates The Island From Puerto Rico. Hispaniola Is Geographically Divided Between Two Countries - Dominican Republic And Haiti.
Haiti Occupies The Western Part Of Hispaniola And Have An Area Of Roughly 27,750 Square Kilometers. The Country Has An Estimated Population Of Approximately 11.5 Million, Its Capital And The Most Populous City Is Port-au-prince.
Dominic Republic Occupies The Eastern Part Of The Hispaniola And Has An Total Area Of Roughly 48,670 Square Kilometres. The Country's Total Population Is Roughly 11.2 Million Inhabitants, And Its Capital And The Largest City By Population Is Santo Domingo.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share a border, and an island. But the two countries are very different today: the Dominican Republic enjoys higher quality of life for many factors than Haiti. I went to this island and visited both countries, to try and understand when and how their paths diverged. And I began to learn how those differences are playing out in the present.
Vox Borders is a new international documentary series presented by lululemon, by Emmy-nominated videojournalist Johnny Harris. For this series, Johnny is producing six 10-15 minute documentaries about different borders stories from around the world.
