A Cleveland stonemason has died after being crushed by 600 kilogram of marble.

Sixty-one-year-old Ray Finch was off-loading two large pieces of marble from a truck about 10am on Tuesday.

Police regional duty officer Acting Inspector Catherine Jones said it was believed the wind may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

Mr Finch's only son, Ray Finch Junior said his father was working the last two days before taking a break over Christmas.

"He was probably the hardest working person I have ever met," he said.

"Finally he was going to get a week off."

Mr Finch jnr said his father would leave for work about 5am, returning home for dinner about 12 hours later.

"He would usually head back down to the factory about 7.30(pm) and get home about 11(pm) every day.

"He was an amazing man. He will be greatly missed."

Also a stonemason and having helped his father in the business, Mr Finch jnr said his father had told him to take the day off.

He arrived shortly after the accident after being called by a friend working at a nearby business.

Mr Finch jnr said his father had owned the business, operating from Shore Street West, for about five years.

Acting Inspector Jones said witnesses had gone to Mr Finch's aid and paramedics had tried to resuscitate him for about half an hour.

She said the tragic incident would be investigated by police and Workplace Health and Safety and a report prepared for the coroner.

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the tragedy came at the worst possible time of year.

"I just can't imagine the heartbreaking Christmas ahead for family and friends," she said.
