Today's Iran Election News (May 7, 2009) - Ahmadinejad defends dissolving Irans planning organization
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said yesterday that he had dissolved the countrys Management and Planning Organization [MPO] by drawing inspiration from the late Mohammad Ali Rajai, the countrys second post revolution president, who was killed in a bomb blast in Tehran in the early eighties.
Ahmadinejad, who seemed to be hitting back at his main election rivals who had earlier criticized this move, said in his speech at the Emamzadeh Hossein [shrine] in the province of Qazvin:
Through his divine and Islamic understanding, martyr Rajai, instructed that the Management and Planning Organization be dissolved and an organization based on religious thought be founded in its place. But with his martyrdom, this undertaking was shelved until the year 1386 [2007], when, with inspiration from his plan, that organization went through some fundamental change, reports Fars News Agency.
Earlier, the pro-reform presidential candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karrubi had said that the closure of the MPO had led to financial disorder and the disruption of the economy.
But Ahmadinejad said that the planning organization was established in Iran by America and that the basis of its planning was imported and Western, resulting in some projects under the last regime, which were devastating for the country and nation.
Meanwhile, the pro-Mousavi website Qalam, reported today that many senior managers of the Plan and Budget Organization at the time and also cabinet members of Rajais government, have rejected Ahmadinejads remarks concerning Rajai and have said that the former president had never opposed the Plan and Budget Organization. What took place at the time, they explain, was that the Revolution Council ordered the temporary closure of that organization, when Musa Kheyr presided over it, for the purposes of restructuring and the possible purge of some individuals affiliated to [the previous] ...

Naneh Sarma and Amu Nowruz
As the golden wings of sunlight slowly spread on the veranda, their warmth call Naneh Sarma out of her sleep
Within a few moments, Amu Noruz arrives at the city gate with blessings in his warm eyes. But before entering the city, he dismounts his horse and picks a field marigold that has just blossomed in his presence; he then rides up into the orchard to visit his beloved. He tethers his horse on the other side of the fountain pool and walks to the veranda where he sees Old Woman Winter sitting in all her glory. But he finds her asleep and snoring softly.
Amu Noruz smiles and thinks that he loves her too much to wake her. Instead, he sits beside her and places the field marigold on her chest. He then throws a pinch of wild rue into the brazier, pours himself a glass of tea and has it with two sugar cubes, places a hot charcoal on the qalyan's top and takes a drag or two. Afterwards, he cuts an orange into two equal halves, has one half with sugar-sweetened water and leaves the other half for Naneh on a plate. At the end, he grabs a pair of tongs and buries all the glowing pieces of charcoal in the ashes of the brazier to protect them from dying down. He caresses Naneh Sarma's cheeks, kisses her on the lips very gently, walks to his horse and rides into the city with the gift of spring in his body and soul.

As she smells wild rue's strong fragrance and rubs her eyes, she is shocked to see that everything around her has been touched. The qalyan's top has fire on it, tea has been served, half of the orange is gone, hot charcoals are moved under the ashes, her cheeks are caressed and her lips, wet. Oh, she has missed her lover. He has come and gone away, again. Yes, again. Gone away without waking her. Naneh Sarma draws herself all around her and turns her eyes down. Whispers of grief begin speaking in her bones; her sigh becomes a sad poem and lingers in the air of the leaf-budding orchard trees.
She looks up, sees high open blue sky, and calls to me, wordlessly. I fly down to her orchard and visit her in her cottage. I can see from her eyes she has been weeping. Not quite believing all will be reborn, she asks me for advice, wants me to do something for her. "You have no choice," I tell her, "but to wait for another year until you hear me carrying Amu Noruz down Mount Qâf again. Next year, wait for him without falling asleep."
Naneh Sarma nods in bitter agreement and her cold flesh begins melting. Steam leaving her body, her spirit rising in a cold disappearing, she speaks to me. She wants me to pick her up and lay the rest of her body on the frosty segment of Mount Qâf where she comes from. As I begin dragging her melting body upward like a white sheet in my beaky mouth, I hear her copper samovar fall, her looking-glass crack, and her stove go out. Her cottage, like a shrine desecrated, crumbles in unfulfilled expectation.
Up on Mount Qâf, at home by the snowy pinewoods, Naneh Sarma's heartbeat lessens and she turns inward to quietude. I trace circles in the snow with my claws as I watch her dissolving through the fog. While her last molecules are melting into the snow and vanishing from everywhere but memory, I tell her I shall witness her awakening in nine months, but I cry over her karma. Naneh Sarma will never embrace Amu Noruz. For this, the world would have to end. It is written.

STORYLINE
Residents in Iran's capital Tehran awoke on Saturday morning to a new era in Egypt, after 18 days of peaceful pro-democracy protests forced President Hosni Mubarak to surrender power to the military, ending three decades of authoritarian rule.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters had marched on Friday to Mubarak's palaces in Cairo and Alexandria and besieged state TV, on a day capped by the military effectively carrying out a coup at the pleas of protesters.
In Tehran, the uprising held wide support with local residents.
"Nations have definitely become more aware of their own fate and know that in the present times, no one can rule them through a patrimonial system. There is a doomed destiny for all these countries," said one man.
Local newspapers noted that the Egyptian leader's resignation fell on the 32nd anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution that toppled the US-backed regime of the Shah in 1979.
Another Tehran resident said that what had happened in Egypt was bound to pass.
"A nation whose leader has always been under the control of a superpower would eventually wake up and seek independence. This is the destiny of a dictator," she said.
After Mubarak's fall, the military, which pledged to bring in reforms for greater democracy, told the nation it would announce the next steps soon.
Those could include the dissolving of parliament and creation of a transitional government.
Mubarak's downfall at the hands of the biggest popular uprising in the modern history of the Arab world had stunning implications for the United States and the West, Israel, and the region, unsettling rulers across the Mideast.
The White House said on Thursday that Iran's government was showing it was scared of the will of its people by cracking down on opposition leaders and blocking international media outlets in the wake of Egypt's uprising.
Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the Iranian government should allow the Iranian people to demonstrate and assemble peacefully.
The government of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has clamped down on its opposition, even as it has cheered the uprising in Egypt.
Gibbs said the government in Tehran is arresting opponents, blocking international media outlets and turning of the Internet.

Today's Iran Election News (May 7, 2009) - Ahmadinejad defends dissolving Irans planning organization President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said yesterday that he had dissolved the countrys Management and Planning Organization [MPO] by drawing inspiration from the late Mohammad Ali Rajai, the countrys second post revolution president, who was killed in a bomb blast in Tehran in the early eighties. Ahmadinejad, who seemed to be hitting back at his main election rivals who had earlier criticized this move, said in his speech at the Emamzadeh Hossein [shrine] in the province of Qazvin: Through his divine and Islamic understanding, martyr Rajai, instructed that the Management and Planning Organization be dissolved and an organization based on religious thought be founded in its place. But with his martyrdom, this undertaking was shelved until the year 1386 [2007], when, with inspiration from his plan, that organization went through some fundamental change, reports Fars News Agency. Earlier, the pro-reform presidential candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karrubi had said that the closure of the MPO had led to financial disorder and the disruption of the economy. But Ahmadinejad said that the planning organization was established in Iran by America and that the basis of its planning was imported and Western, resulting in some projects under the last regime, which were devastating for the country and nation. Meanwhile, the pro-Mousavi website Qalam, reported today that many senior managers of the Plan and Budget Organization at the time and also cabinet members of Rajais government, have rejected Ahmadinejads remarks concerning Rajai and have said that the former president had never opposed the Plan and Budget Organization. Part 2 Naneh Sarma and Amu Nowruz As the golden wings of sunlight slowly spread on the veranda, their warmth call Naneh Sarma out of her sleep Within a few moments, Amu Noruz arrives at the city gate with blessings in his warm eyes. But before entering the city, he dismounts his horse and picks a field marigold that has just blossomed in his presence; he then rides up into the orchard to visit his beloved. He tethers his horse on the other side of the fountain pool and walks to the veranda where he sees Old Woman Winter sitting in all her glory. But he finds her asleep and snoring softly. Amu Noruz smiles and thinks that he loves her too much to wake her. Instead, he sits beside her and places the field marigold on her chest. He then throws a pinch of wild rue into the brazier, pours himself a glass of tea and has it with two sugar cubes, places a hot charcoal on the qalyan's top and takes a drag or two. Afterwards, he cuts an orange into two equal halves, has one half with sugar-sweetened water and leaves the other half for Naneh on a plate. At the end, he grabs a pair of tongs and buries all the glowing pieces of charcoal in the ashes of the brazier to protect them from dying down. He caresses Naneh Sarma's cheeks, kisses her on the lips very gently, walks to his horse and rides into the city with the gift of spring in his body and soul. As the golden wings of sunlight slowly spread on the veranda, their warmth call Naneh Sarma out of her sleep. She looks around and sees everything as if peering through a veil. As she smells wild rue's strong fragrance and rubs her eyes, she is shocked to see that everything around her has been touched. The qalyan's top has fire on it, tea has been served, half of the orange is gone, hot charcoals are moved under the ashes, her cheeks are caressed and her lips, wet. Oh, she has missed her lover. He has come and gone away, again. Yes, again. Gone away without waking her. Naneh Sarma draws herself all around her and turns her eyes down. Whispers of grief begin speaking in her bones; her sigh becomes a sad poem and lingers in the air of the leaf-budding orchard trees. She looks up, sees high open blue sky, and calls to me, wordlessly. I fly down to her orchard and visit her in her cottage. I can see from her eyes she has been weeping. Not quite believing all will be reborn, she asks me for advice, wants me to do something for her. "You have no choice," I tell her, "but to wait for another year until you hear me carrying Amu Noruz down Mount Qâf again. Next year, wait for him without falling asleep." Naneh Sarma nods in bitter agreement and her cold flesh begins melting. Steam leaving her body, her spirit rising in a cold disappearing, she speaks to me. She wants me to pick her up and lay the rest of her body on the frosty segment of Mount Qâf where she comes from. As I begin dragging her melting body upward like a white sheet in my beaky mouth, I hear her copper samovar fall, her looking-glass crack, and her stove go out. Her cottage, like a shrine desecrated, crumbles in unfulfilled expectation. Up on Mount Qâf, at home by the snowy pinewoods, Naneh Sarma's heartbeat lessens and she turns inward to quietude. I trace circles in the snow with my claws as I watch her dissolving through the fog. While her last molecules are melting into the snow and vanishing from everywhere but memory, I tell her I shall witness her awakening in nine months, but I cry over her karma. Naneh Sarma will never embrace Amu Noruz. For this, the world would have to end. It is written. Earlier, the pro-reform presidential candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karrubi had said that the closure of the MPO had led to financial disorder and the disruption of the economy.
But Ahmadinejad said that the planning organization was established in Iran by America and that the basis of its planning was imported and Western, resulting in some projects under the last regime, which were devastating for the country and nation.
Meanwhile, the pro-Mousavi website Qalam, reported today that many senior managers of the Plan and Budget Organization at the time and also cabinet members of Rajais government, have rejected Ahmadinejads remarks concerning Rajai and have said that the former president had never opposed the Plan and Budget Organization. As the golden wings of sunlight slowly spread on the veranda, their warmth call Naneh Sarma out of her sleep
Within a few moments, Amu Noruz arrives at the city gate with blessings in his warm eyes. But before entering the city, he dismounts his horse and picks a field marigold that has just blossomed in his presence; he then rides up into the orchard to visit his beloved. He tethers his horse on the other side of the fountain pool and walks to the veranda where he sees Old Woman Winter sitting in all her glory. But he finds her asleep and snoring softly.
Amu Noruz smiles and thinks that he loves her too much to wake her. Instead, he sits beside her and places the field marigold on her chest. He then throws a pinch of wild rue into the brazier, pours himself a glass of tea and has it with two sugar cubes, places a hot charcoal on the qalyan's top and takes a drag or two. Afterwards, he cuts an orange into two equal halves, has one half with sugar-sweetened water and leaves the other half for Naneh on a plate. At the end, he grabs a pair of tongs and buries all the glowing pieces of charcoal in the ashes of the brazier to protect them from dying down. He caresses Naneh Sarma's cheeks, kisses her on the lips very gently, walks to his horse and rides into the city with the gift of spring in his body and soul.

As she smells wild rue's strong fragrance and rubs her eyes, she is shocked to see that everything around her has been touched. The qalyan's top has fire on it, tea has been served, half of the orange is gone, hot charcoals are moved under the ashes, her cheeks are caressed and her lips, wet. Oh, she has missed her lover. He has come and gone away, again. Yes, again. Gone away without waking her. Naneh Sarma draws herself all around her and turns her eyes down. Whispers of grief begin speaking in her bones; her sigh becomes a sad poem and lingers in the air of the leaf-budding orchard trees.
She looks up, sees high open blue sky, and calls to me, wordlessly. I fly down to her orchard and visit her in her cottage. I can see from her eyes she has been weeping. Not quite believing all will be reborn, she asks me for advice, wants me to do something for her. "You have no choice," I tell her, "but to wait for another year until you hear me carrying Amu Noruz down Mount Qâf again. Next year, wait for him without falling asleep."
Naneh Sarma nods in bitter agreement and her cold flesh begins melting. Steam leaving her body, her spirit rising in a cold disappearing, she speaks to me. She wants me to pick her up and lay the rest of her body on the frosty segment of Mount Qâf where she comes from. As I begin dragging her melting body upward like a white sheet in my beaky mouth, I hear her copper samovar fall, her looking-glass crack, and her stove go out. Her cottage, like a shrine desecrated, crumbles in unfulfilled expectation.
Up on Mount Qâf, at home by the snowy pinewoods, Naneh Sarma's heartbeat lessens and she turns inward to quietude. I trace circles in the snow with my claws as I watch her dissolving through the fog. While her last molecules are melting into the snow and vanishing from everywhere but memory, I tell her I shall witness her awakening in nine months, but I cry over her karma. Naneh Sarma will never embrace Amu Noruz. For this, the world would have to end. It is written.

Residents in Iran's capital Tehran awoke on Saturday morning to a new era in Egypt, after 18 days of peaceful pro-democracy protests forced President Hosni Mubarak to surrender power to the military, ending three decades of authoritarian rule.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters had marched on Friday to Mubarak's palaces in Cairo and Alexandria and besieged state TV, on a day capped by the military effectively carrying out a coup at the pleas of protesters.
In Tehran, the uprising held wide support with local residents.
"Nations have definitely become more aware of their own fate and know that in the present times, no one can rule them through a patrimonial system. There is a doomed destiny for all these countries," said one man.
Local newspapers noted that the Egyptian leader's resignation fell on the 32nd anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution that toppled the US-backed regime of the Shah in 1979.
Another Tehran resident said that what had happened in Egypt was bound to pass.
"A nation whose leader has always been under the control of a superpower would eventually wake up and seek independence. This is the destiny of a dictator," she said.
After Mubarak's fall, the military, which pledged to bring in reforms for greater democracy, told the nation it would announce the next steps soon.
Those could include the dissolving of parliament and creation of a transitional government.
Mubarak's downfall at the hands of the biggest popular uprising in the modern history of the Arab world had stunning implications for the United States and the West, Israel, and the region, unsettling rulers across the Mideast.
The White House said on Thursday that Iran's government was showing it was scared of the will of its people by cracking down on opposition leaders and blocking international media outlets in the wake of Egypt's uprising.
Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the Iranian government should allow the Iranian people to demonstrate and assemble peacefully.
The government of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has clamped down on its opposition, even as it has cheered the uprising in Egypt.
Gibbs said the government in Tehran is arresting opponents, blocking international media outlets and turning of the Internet.

Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer.
But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastrian site of the Towers of Silence, the magnificent Friday Mosque and a number of beautiful palaces and gardens.
Shiraz meanwhile is a lovely university town, known as the city of poets, wine, literature and flowers, and is a real delight. I particularly loved visiting the atmospheric tomb of the Persian poet Hafez. In the evenings it has a magical atmosphere as people gather to read poetry and celebrate the life of this revered poet. Shiraz is also blessed with numerous picturesque mosques and beautiful gardens.
The jewel in the Persian crown is undoubtedly the beautiful city of Esfahan, which has one of the largest squares in the world in the breathtaking Naqsh Jahan Square and probably the most stunning Islamic architecture found anywhere. Esfahan is unbelievably picturesque, with its famed bridges and lively bazaars.
ANCIENT SITES
Iran has a long and rich history, with the Persian Empire at one point ruling over 44% of the world's population. The country is home to some world-class archaeological sites, including the rock-carved tombs of Nagsh e Rostam, where Darius the great is buried, and the spectacular Achamaenid palace complex at Persepolis. This ancient palace was built by Darius the Great to celebrate events such as the Persian New Year, when representatives from the four corners of the empire would congregate. This vast site merits at least a couple of hours to explore the ruins and bas reliefs.
SCENERY
But it's not only about the cities and ancient sites, the scenery of Iran is an unexpected highlight. From beautiful picnic spots such as the Murgon Waterfalls, to fertile valleys in the Bavanat Mountains, where you can encounter Kashqai nomads and see a way of life that has changed little over centuries. In the Dena mountains around Yasuj you'll find an alpine scenery of snow-capped mountains, lakes and streams. It is well worth spending some time away from the better-known cultural sites to explore this lesser-known side of Iran. It really is a beautiful country.
THE PEOPLE
The people of Iran are another real highlight, being welcoming and keen to engage in conversation about everything from politics to football. You are likely to be surrounded by schoolkids asking you questions, offered tea and invited to share in picnics with the locals pretty much wherever you go.
If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change.
So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. The Koran Gate leads to the city of Shiraz, a city of love, roses and poetry. Famous Persian poets once lived here and created works of great beauty. Today their mausoleums are visited with much reverence, such as the Hafiz Tomb. For fifty eight years, Ionic stonemasons, Babylonian brick makers, Median and Egyptian goldsmiths, worked in Persepolis, they created what was an indelible symbol of the Achaemenid Empire. Its interior features the history of the Christianisation of Armenia that is depicted on several illustrated panels created by the Holy Gregor. The grandeur of Islamic architecture is reflected in Emam Square, the central square of the Safavid Era, known as "The image of the world". It is seven times larger than the Piazza San Marco in Venice. To the south the square is lined by a domed structure which for some years has been known as the Emam Khomeini Mosque, perfectly aligned toward Mecca. Esfahan is an architectural work of art and today one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

The narrow streets of the historic Old Town mainly consist of mud-built buildings with partially covered corridors, domes and numerous wind towers. The maze of narrow streets in which several single-storey buildings are still inhabited has been designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The city’s largest water storage tank is dominated by six wind towers that capture the slightest breeze that in turn cool down the stored water. Nearby, Agh-E-Dolat A-Bad, the magnificent palace residence of Mohamma Taqui Khan Bafqi who was Governor of Yazd from 1747 A.D. Yazd is not only an ancient culture, it is also an Oriental dream!
