I first saw Owain Phyfe at the Twig Renaissance Faire. I am the court photographer, and was assigned to photograph various performances. I had never heard of him before and as I began to video his first performance I knew immediately I was in the presence of an artist of rare quality. He is American with a Welsh heritage, and therefore speaks English and Welsh fluently. He spent a lot of time in Mexico and South America and I believe he knows Spanish pretty well. He also sings in archaic languages, Italian and an old form of German. He says he is a "singer of songs." I hope you will enjoy all his videos, which you can see on my YouTube channel.

Las cantigas de amigo son el género más antiguo de la lírica gallega. Fue cultivado con especial predilección por los compositores gallegos, pero inspiraba también a los grandes compositores extranjeros. El trovador occitano Raimbaut de Vaqueiras escribió una pieza al estilo de la cantiga de amigo a finales del siglo XII.
El estilo de la cantiga de amigo es una combinación de pequeños y muy contados elementos, muy refinados y elaborados al mismo tiempo. Una cantiga de amigo típica se compone de estrofas de dos versos más estribillo. La melodía del primer verso se repite en el verso siguiente, sutilmente adornada y cambiada; la cadencia queda suspendida para dar paso al estribillo. El estribillo introduce un nuevo material melódico, con el que se explora otra parte de la escala. Con más frecuencia que en las cantigas de amor, las frases musicales coinciden con la longitud de los versos del texto: cuando se acaba el verso, se acaba también la frase. El texto poético juega con los paralelismos y repeticiones, con imágenes simbólicas, y se centra en la contemplación de las emociones y sentimientos de una muchacha enamorada.
The cantigas de amigo form the greatest collection of women's songs from medieval Europe. These songs of love and longing for the absent beloved were composed, mostly by men, throughout 13th century Spain, particularly in the region of Galicia and in Portugal under the patronage of King Dinis, grandson of Alfonso X.
Although this genre was particularly cultivated by Galician composers, it also inspired the greatest foreign ones. The Occitan troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras wrote a piece in the style of the cantiga de amigo at the end of the 12th century.
The style of the cantiga de amigo is a combination of small and very few elements, though greatly refined and elaborated at the same time. The typical cantiga de amigo consists of verses of two lines with a refrain. The melody of the first line is repeated in the following line, subtly embellished and changed. The refrain introduces a new melodic material and explores another part of the mode. The musical phrases, more frequent than in the cantigas de amor, match up with the length of the lines of the text: when te line ends, the music phrase ends too. The text plays on parallelisms and repetitions, on symbolic images, focusing on the contemplation of the emotions and feelings of a girl in love.

De la rica tradición medieval en la lírica profana galaico-portuguesa han llegado hasta hoy día alrededor de 1650 obras.
Se conocen gracias al Cancionero de Ajuda, al Cancionero de la Biblioteca Vaticana, Cancionero Colocci-Brancuti y al descubrimiento de los manuscritos: el Pergamino Sharrer y el Pergamino Vindel, ambos conservados por su posterior utilización como material de encuadernación de códices.
El Pergamino Sharrer fue descubierto en el Arquivo da Torre do Tombo de Lisboa en el año 1990 por el profesor Harvey Leo Sharrer, es un fragmento de una obra mayor, quizás del Livro das Trovas de Dom Dinis, cancionero monográfico que contenía composiciones de Denis I, rey de Portugal. Fue compuesto en el scriptorium real hacia finales del s.XIII o principios del s.XIV.
Don Denis, rey de Portugal, gobernó entre 1279 y 1325. De modo similar a su abuelo, Alfonso X el Sabio, inspirador de la colección de las Cantigas de Santa María, también Denis I fue un mecenas de la cultura (entre otras cosas fundador de la Universidad de Lisboa, que luego sería llevada a Coimbra) y un amante del arte trovadoresco, que hizo de su corte un importante lugar de cultivo de la poesía galaico-portuguesa. A total amount of about 1650 pieces of the valuable secular lyric medieval tradition in Galician-Portuguese language have survived to our times.
These compositions are in the Cancioneiro de Ajuda, Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Vaticana, Cancioneiro Colocci-Brancuti and of the discovery of manuscripts: the Pergaminho Sharrer (Sharrer's Parchment) and the Pergamiño Vindel (Vindel's Parchment). He was himself an important and gifted troubadour and was fully familiar with literary trends in Occitanian and French. He left 138 compositions.

Paio Gomes Charinho de Soutomaior (Payo Gómez Chariño de Sotomayor) fue un trovador, poeta y noble gallego. Nació alrededor de 1225 y destacó por sus habilidades militares en el mar. En los años cuarenta del siglo XIII participó en la conquista de Sevilla, al frente de una flota que remonto el Guadalquivir. Desde el año 1285 ocupó una importante posición en la corte de Sancho IV, debida, probablemente, a su ayuda al infante contra su padre, Alfonso X. En 1292 desempeñó el cargo de Adelantado Mayor del Reino de Galicia al servicio del monarca Sancho IV. Murió asesinado por sus enemigos políticos en el año 1295.

Paio Gomes Charinho was a composer and poet from a noble family settled in Galicia. He born about 1225. In the 1240's he took part in the conquest of Seville. Since 1284 he occupied an outstanding position in the court of Sancho IV, probably due to the fact that he had helped the prince against his father, Alfonso X. He was appointed Admiral of the Sea and, in 1290, Meirinho-mor (chief judge) of the Kingdom of Galicia. In Pai Gomes' lyric poetry there are two particularly recurrent and linked subjects: the sea and the politics. The cantiga "De cuantas cousas eno mundo son" is well-known. In it, he compares the King of Castile and León with the dangerous and powerful sea. Another motif developed in his cantigas is the similarity between danger and the beauty of the sea and love. He died in 1295, murdered by political enemies.

Court
A court is a tribunal, often as governmental institution, with the authority to adjudicate legal disputes between parties and carry out the administration of justice in civil, criminal, and administrative matters in accordance with the rule of law. In both common law and civil law legal systems, courts are the central means for dispute resolution, and it is generally understood that all persons have an ability to bring their claims before a court. Similarly, the rights of those accused of a crime include the right to present a defense before a court.
The system of courts that interprets and applies the law is collectively known as the judiciary. The place where a court sits is known as a venue. The room where court proceedings occur is known as a courtroom, and the building as a courthouse; court facilities range from simple and very small facilities in rural communities to large buildings in cities.
The practical authority given to the court is known as its jurisdiction (Latin jus dicere) – the court's power to decide certain kinds of questions or petitions put to it. According to William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England, a court is constituted by a minimum of three parties: the actor or plaintiff, who complains of an injury done; the reus or defendant, who is called upon to make satisfaction for it, and the judex or judicial power, which is to examine the truth of the fact, to determine the law arising upon that fact, and, if any injury appears to have been done, to ascertain and by its officers to apply a legal remedy. It is also usual in the superior courts to have barristers, and attorneys or counsel, as assistants, though, often, courts consist of additional barristers, bailiffs, reporters, and perhaps a jury.

Renaissance fair
A Renaissance fair, Renaissance faire, or Renaissance festival is an outdoor weekend gathering, usually held in the United States, open to the public and typically commercial in nature, which purportedly recreates a historical setting for the amusement of its guests. Some are permanent theme parks, while others are short-term events in fairgrounds or other large public or private spaces. Renaissance fairs generally include an abundance of costumed entertainers or fair-goers, musical and theatrical acts, art and handicrafts for sale, and festival food. Some offer campgrounds for those who wish to stay more than one day. Many Renaissance fairs are set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Some are set earlier, during the reign of Henry VIII, or in other countries, such as France, and some are set outside the era of the Renaissance; these may include earlier Medieval periods (including Vikings), or later periods, such as 17th-18th Century pirates. Some engage in deliberate "time travel" by encouraging participants to wear costumes representing several eras in a broad time period. Renaissance fairs encourage visitors to enter into the spirit of things with costumes and audience participation. Many welcome fantasy elements such as wizards and elves.

Se conocen gracias al Cancionero de Ajuda, al Cancionero de la Biblioteca Vaticana, Cancionero Colocci-Brancuti y al descubrimiento de los manuscritos: el Pergamino Sharrer y el Pergamino Vindel, ambos conservados por su posterior utilización como material de encuadernación de códices. El Pergamino Sharrer fue descubierto en el Arquivo da Torre do Tombo de Lisboa en el año 1990 por el profesor Harvey Leo Sharrer, es un fragmento de una obra mayor, quizás del Livro das Trovas de Dom Dinis, cancionero monográfico que contenía composiciones de Denis I, rey de Portugal. He born about 1225. In the 1240's he took part in the conquest of Seville. Since 1284 he occupied an outstanding position in the court of Sancho IV, probably due to the fact that he had helped the prince against his father, Alfonso X. He was appointed Admiral of the Sea and, in 1290, Meirinho-mor (chief judge) of the Kingdom of Galicia. In Pai Gomes' lyric poetry there are two particularly recurrent and linked subjects: the sea and the politics. The cantiga "De cuantas cousas eno mundo son" is well-known. In it, he compares the King of Castile and León with the dangerous and powerful sea. Another motif developed in his cantigas is the similarity between danger and the beauty of the sea and love. El trovador occitano Raimbaut de Vaqueiras escribió una pieza al estilo de la cantiga de amigo a finales del siglo XII.
El estilo de la cantiga de amigo es una combinación de pequeños y muy contados elementos, muy refinados y elaborados al mismo tiempo. Una cantiga de amigo típica se compone de estrofas de dos versos más estribillo. La melodía del primer verso se repite en el verso siguiente, sutilmente adornada y cambiada; la cadencia queda suspendida para dar paso al estribillo. El estribillo introduce un nuevo material melódico, con el que se explora otra parte de la escala. Con más frecuencia que en las cantigas de amor, las frases musicales coinciden con la longitud de los versos del texto: cuando se acaba el verso, se acaba también la frase. El texto poético juega con los paralelismos y repeticiones, con imágenes simbólicas, y se centra en la contemplación de las emociones y sentimientos de una muchacha enamorada.
The cantigas de amigo form the greatest collection of women's songs from medieval Europe. These songs of love and longing for the absent beloved were composed, mostly by men, throughout 13th century Spain, particularly in the region of Galicia and in Portugal under the patronage of King Dinis, grandson of Alfonso X.
Although this genre was particularly cultivated by Galician composers, it also inspired the greatest foreign ones. The Occitan troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras wrote a piece in the style of the cantiga de amigo at the end of the 12th century.
The style of the cantiga de amigo is a combination of small and very few elements, though greatly refined and elaborated at the same time. The typical cantiga de amigo consists of verses of two lines with a refrain. The melody of the first line is repeated in the following line, subtly embellished and changed. The refrain introduces a new melodic material and explores another part of the mode. The musical phrases, more frequent than in the cantigas de amor, match up with the length of the lines of the text: when te line ends, the music phrase ends too. The text plays on parallelisms and repetitions, on symbolic images, focusing on the contemplation of the emotions and feelings of a girl in love.

Con más frecuencia que en las cantigas de amor, las frases musicales coinciden con la longitud de los versos del texto: cuando se acaba el verso, se acaba también la frase. El texto poético juega con los paralelismos y repeticiones, con imágenes simbólicas, y se centra en la contemplación de las emociones y sentimientos de una muchacha enamorada.
The cantigas de amigo form the greatest collection of women's songs from medieval Europe. These songs of love and longing for the absent beloved were composed, mostly by men, throughout 13th century Spain, particularly in the region of Galicia and in Portugal under the patronage of King Dinis, grandson of Alfonso X.
Although this genre was particularly cultivated by Galician composers, it also inspired the greatest foreign ones. The Occitan troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras wrote a piece in the style of the cantiga de amigo at the end of the 12th century.
The style of the cantiga de amigo is a combination of small and very few elements, though greatly refined and elaborated at the same time. The typical cantiga de amigo consists of verses of two lines with a refrain. The melody of the first line is repeated in the following line, subtly embellished and changed. The refrain introduces a new melodic material and explores another part of the mode. The musical phrases, more frequent than in the cantigas de amor, match up with the length of the lines of the text: when te line ends, the music phrase ends too. The text plays on parallelisms and repetitions, on symbolic images, focusing on the contemplation of the emotions and feelings of a girl in love.

Paio Gomes Charinho de Soutomaior (Payo Gómez Chariño de Sotomayor) fue un trovador, poeta y noble gallego. Nació alrededor de 1225 y destacó por sus habilidades militares en el mar. En los años cuarenta del siglo XIII participó en la conquista de Sevilla, al frente de una flota que remonto el Guadalquivir. Desde el año 1285 ocupó una importante posición en la corte de Sancho IV, debida, probablemente, a su ayuda al infante contra su padre, Alfonso X. En 1292 desempeñó el cargo de Adelantado Mayor del Reino de Galicia al servicio del monarca Sancho IV. Murió asesinado por sus enemigos políticos en el año 1295.

Paio Gomes Charinho was a composer and poet from a noble family settled in Galicia. He born about 1225. In the 1240's he took part in the conquest of Seville. Since 1284 he occupied an outstanding position in the court of Sancho IV, probably due to the fact that he had helped the prince against his father, Alfonso X. He was appointed Admiral of the Sea and, in 1290, Meirinho-mor (chief judge) of the Kingdom of Galicia. In Pai Gomes' lyric poetry there are two particularly recurrent and linked subjects: the sea and the politics. The cantiga "De cuantas cousas eno mundo son" is well-known. In it, he compares the King of Castile and León with the dangerous and powerful sea. Another motif developed in his cantigas is the similarity between danger and the beauty of the sea and love. He died in 1295, murdered by political enemies.

I first saw Owain Phyfe at the Twig Renaissance Faire. I am the court photographer, and was assigned to photograph various performances. I had never heard of him before and as I began to video his first performance I knew immediately I was in the presence of an artist of rare quality. He is American with a Welsh heritage, and therefore speaks English and Welsh fluently. He spent a lot of time in Mexico and South America and I believe he knows Spanish pretty well. He also sings in archaic languages, Italian and an old form of German. He says he is a "singer of songs." I hope you will enjoy all his videos, which you can see on my YouTube channel.
