Severe storms to continue mid-week
Ben Domensino, Tuesday December 20, 2016 - 16:52 EDT
More severe thunderstorms will develop over parts of NSW and Queensland on Wednesday.
A trough of low pressure is producing a broad band of storms in both states today. Warnings were issued for parts of the southern inland Queensland and northeast NSW this afternoon, with damaging winds and heavy rain a threat. Large hail is also possible in some areas.
Windorah collected 14mm in one hour earlier today and Oakey had 8mm in 20 minutes as storms rolled through. South of the border, Moree picked up 27mm during a downpour, more than half of which fell in just ten minutes. No damaging wind gusts had been recorded as of 3pm EST, although they are possible with storms in coming hours.
The trough will continue to generate violent storms on Wednesday across northeast NSW and much of central, southern and western Queensland.
The most likely area to experience severe storms will be the northern ranges and far north coast in NSW and the southeast inland of Queensland. Damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain are all a threat. It is possible that storms will affect the southeast coast of Queensland from the afternoon.
