A Turkish police officer who angrily denounced the bloodshed in Syria fatally shot diplomat Andrei Karlov in front of horrified spectators at an art gallery in Turkey’s capital. In a video of the attack, the gunman is heard shouting: “Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria!” It was among the most brazen retaliatory attacks yet on Russia since Moscow entered the war in Syria on the side of President Bashar al-Assad.
Turkey’s relations with the West are at a low ebb, with many governments condemning Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s purge of opponents after a failed coup attempt. Now Monday's slaying may compel him to make concessions to Russia.
