Poland: Thousands turn out for pro-EU rallies after court ruling | DW News
Thousands are attending pro-European Union rallies across Poland with the main event taking place in the capital Warsaw. It comes just days after the country's landmark ruling against the bloc.
On Thursday, a top court ruled that some Polish laws have priority over European Union laws. The European Commission expressed "serious concerns" over the ruling - while the opposition in Poland warned of the possibility of the country leaving the 27-nation bloc.

Can the European Union defend itself? | Inside Story

European Commission president Ursula Von Der Leyen says the bloc needs the political will to stand on its own.

The European Parliament explained
This video is gives a short yet comprehensive introduction of the European Parliament. Among other things it covers the composition, powers and tasks of the European Parliament.
For more information on the EU and its institutions please subscribe to our channel.
In this series we explain complex aspects of the EU in a comprehensive and understandable way. If however, despite our diligence and help of Dr. Jan Oster, we have left something out or made a mistake, please be so kind to tell and forgive us.
Corrections:
From the 2019 elections onward the number of MEPs (reduction from 751 to 705) and distribution per country will be different due to the UK leaving. For the new distribution check http://www.europarl.europa.eu/resources/library/images/20180702PHT07008/20180702PHT07008_original....

EU discusses membership hopes for Western Balkans | DW News
Several Balkan countries will be seeking reassurances from the European Union today, as they meet in Slovenia to talk about their eventual acceptance into the bloc.
Member states took the opportunity to discuss issues of foreign policy, following the fallout from the Afghanistan withdrawal.
But much of their deliberations will be focused on calming the nerves of western Balkan nations, who have been waiting for years to be accepted into the EU. Talks of expanding the union have recently stalled.
One of those countries hoping to join is Albania. Some EU members are cautious about Albania's membership, due to the country's problems with drug trafficking and money laundering.

Several Balkan countries will be seeking reassurances from the European Union today, as they meet in Slovenia to talk about their eventual acceptance into the bloc.
Member states took the opportunity to discuss issues of foreign policy, following the fallout from the
Afghanistan withdrawal.
But much of their deliberations will be focused on calming the nerves of western Balkan nations, who have been waiting for years to be accepted into the EU. Talks of expanding the union have recently stalled.
One of those countries hoping to join is
Albania. Some EU members are cautious about Albania's membership, due to the country's problems with drug trafficking and money laundering.

Right-wing populists and the EU | DW Documentary
2019 looks to be a good year for right-wing populists in Europe.
Be it Italy, France, Hungary, Poland or Germany, many European countries are experiencing a shift to the right. Right-wing populists are expected to make significant gains in the European Parliament elections this spring.
Right-leaning party representatives have an agenda: they want to dismantle to the European Union. Guido Reil of Germany’s AfD party believes the best way to do that is by going to Brussels. "It is easier to destroy something from the inside than from the outside." Joseph Sauvage, a cafe owner in Denain in northern France, backs Marine Le Pen's Rassemblement National party, because he doesn't want to see people in Denain abandoned. Declaration of the European Action Conference in Frankfurt on February 26th, 2012
The 400 participants of the Action Conference from February 24th to 26th in Frankfurt/ Main, Germany, have decided to call for days of protest from May 17th to 19th against the crisis dictatorship of the European Union. We resist the disaster that is applied to Greece and other countries, against the impoverishment and denial of rights of millions of people and the practical abolition of democratic procedures resulting from the decisions of the Troika consisting of ECB, EU and IMF.
The days of protest in Frankfurt directly succeed to the International Action Day on May 12th and the anniversary of the first assembly in Madrid on May 15th. We are therefore sending a visible...

Orban has canceled a trip to Munich for his country's match against Germany in the European football championship, German news agency dpa reported on Wednesday.

That's compared to 555 billion with the US. China had suffered badly from the coronavirus pandemic during the first quarter. But it recovered rapidly - in 2020, consumption rose year on year. That also drove sales of many European products..

"When the factories closed, the small shops closed. There is nothing here, economically speaking. No work. It’s also changed politically. It used to be communist. But that changed with the end of opportunities for the working class." His view of migration has also changed. "Immigrants are entitled to the same social benefits without ever having worked here." Like Joseph Sauvage, Luca Davide, a member of Italy’s Northern League party, says he's had enough of living in a run-down block in a small city full of foreigners. "We don't need drug dealers, we don't need illegals! We just want to live here in peace and safety." In early February 2018, a right-wing supporter targeted Africans in a drive-by shooting rampage. According to Northern League leader Matteo Salvini, the EU shares "moral responsibility” for the act because it "filled the country with illegal foreigners." Messages like these are met with support. Evidence of just how a state’s society and institutions change when right-wing populists come to power is evident in Hungary. Many judges, organizations that support refugees or human rights, scientists, and journalists speak of massive restrictions in Orban's "illiberal democracy". But a lot of young Hungarians starting to push back.

We are therefore sending a visible sign of solidarity to those people in Europe who have been and are resisting against the debtocracy of the Troika and the attacks on their livelihood and their future. Simultaneously, protests are being organised in the US against the G8 Summit in Chicago.
The choice of Frankfurt for the protests results from the role that the city has as headquarters of the European Central Bank (ECB) and of powerful German and international banks and corporations.
On May 17, we will occupy parks and main squares of the city to create spaces for discussion and exchange. On May 18, we will block the running business of banks in Frankfurt and turn our anger about the Troika's policies into action. We will gather for a large demonstration on May 19 and visualise the broad base of the protests. From many countries and regions of the world people will travel to Frankfurt and participate in the days of protest.
The success of the protests requires a mobilisation that is actively supported by as many as possible: the Occupy movement, the initiatives of unemployed and the crisis alliances, trade unionists, Attac, the environmental and peace movement, migrants', youth and students' organisations, anti-racist, anti-fascist and left groups, activists of various local struggles and the Left Party.
The period of mobilisation includes the European action day on March 31st and international Mayday, as well as collective bargaining struggles in Germany that have our solidarity.

The European Union's chief executive on Wednesday threatened legal action against Hungary for legislation that restricts young people's access to information about LGBT+ issues.
Last week, the Hungarian parliament approved the controversial bill, which has to be signed by the president to take effect.
"This Hungarian bill is a shame,'' European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a news conference.
Hungary's right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview with German news agency dpa that the bill was aimed at protecting children.
Orban has canceled a trip to Munich for his country's match against Germany in the European football championship, German news agency dpa reported on Wednesday.
Munich city councilors had put forward a motion to have the stadium illuminated in rainbow colors after Hungarian lawmakers passed an anti-LGBT+ law. But the European football's governing body, UEFA, declined Munich's request.
