Although the rain is finally beginning to stop, South Carolina's residents have been warned that the historic event is far from over.
"Catastrophic flooding continues," wrote the National Weather Service's Charleston office in a Monday morning forecast discussion. Making matters worse, a wind advisory has been issued for some parts of the Palmetto State, and with all this saturated ground, there's a big fear that trees will blow over, adding another threat for pedestrians and drivers.
The 1,000-year rain event has set records all over the state, flooding entire towns. At least six people have died from the floods in South Carolina since the rain began to fall days ago.
The rain hasn't subsided everywhere yet. In northeastern South Carolina, where areas like Myrtle Beach experienced severe flooding on Sunday, heavy rainfall continued Monday, and officials warned life-threatening impacts would persist into the week.
"The flooding is unprecedented and historical," said Dr. Marshall Shepherd, a meteorologist and director of the atmospheric sciences program at the University of Georgia, in an email to The Associated Press.
The University of South Carolina announced Monday classes will be canceled due to the floods. Parts of Columbia, including the USC campus, lost water service, and plans were being made to deliver bottled water and portable restrooms to the students Monday morning.
City officials have released a statement issuing a boil water advisory to all 375,000 of its water customers, advising them to vigorously boil their water for a full minute at the least. Any ice made from water that was not boiled beforehand should also not be used.
Swift-water rescue teams plucked hundreds of residents from stranded cars and flooded homes all over the state.
"Move to higher ground now. This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation," wrote the National Weather Service's Charleston office in a Sunday morning flash flood statement.
Officials claim it may take weeks or months to assess all of the closed roads and bridges, including a 75-mile stretch of I-95, the freeway that connects Miami to Washington, D.C. to New York.
Hundreds of roads remain closed Monday across the state; the South Carolina Department of Transportation has a full list here.

An intense band of heavy rainfall will continue across South Carolina and far southeastern North Carolina through Monday, worsening the already historic flooding that is underway.
In eastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina, totals will range from 12 to 24 inches, nearly half of the normal rainfall for an entire year in some areas.
"With records being broken for both rainfall and creek levels, it is easy to see why flood waters are inundating so many roads and communities," stated AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski, "and unfortunately, more rain will only worsen the life-threatening situation into Heavy rainfall began across much of the East Coast on Thursday. While a good portion of the East Coast has had the heavy rain taper to showers or even drizzle, a band of heavy rain continues to sit over South Carolina and far southeastern North Carolina.
Even though Hurricane Joaquin is tracking away from the United States, the torrential rainfall developed due to a combination of tropical moisture and a non-tropical system.
Lives and property will be severely threatened where the heavy rain hits the same areas for several hours.
An additional 3 to 6 inches of rain will fall in northeastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina through Monday.
Locally higher amounts are possible in areas where the heavy rain band sits for a long duration of time. Rainfall rates could reach 1 and 2 inches of rain per hour.
According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Michael Doll, "Storm drains will be unable to keep up with the extreme rainfall rates and entire towns will become lakes."
Flood waters threaten to enter more homes and businesses, as well as submerge vehicles. Motorists who venture out amid the flooding and torrential rain run the risk of getting stranded or could put their lives in danger as more roads will go under water. Hundreds of swift water rescues have been performed since Saturday night, according to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.

Historic flooding devastates South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- People across South Carolina got an object lesson Monday in how you can dodge a hurricane and still get hammered.
Authorities struggled to get water to communities swamped by it, and with waterlogged dams overflowing, bridges collapsing, hundreds of roads inundated and floodwaters rolling down to the coast, the state was anything but done with this disaster.
"This is a Hugo-level event," said Maj. Gen. Robert Livingston, head of the South Carolina National Guard, referring to the September 1989 hurricane that devastated Charleston. "We didn't see this level of erosion in Hugo. ... This water doesn't fool around."
On Monday evening, the North Carolina Department of Public Service confirmed a total of two weather-related fatalities while South Carolina DPS confirmed 11 weather-related fatalities, bringing the total in the Carolina's to 13 fatalities.
Much-feared Hurricane Joaquin missed the East Coast, but fueled what experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called a "fire hose" of tropical moisture that aimed directly at the state. A solid week of rainfall killed at least 13 people, sent about 1,000 to shelters and left about 40,000 without drinkable water.
One of latest to die was McArthur Woods, 56, who drove around a barricade and drowned Sunday night. His passenger managed to climb on top of the sedan, which stalled in the rushing water. A firefighter rescued her after someone heard her screams.
"She came out the window. How she got on top of the car and stayed there like she did with that water-- there's a good Lord," Kershaw County Coroner David West said.
By Monday, the heaviest rains had moved into the mid-Atlantic states. Along the Jersey Shore, some beaches devastated by Superstorm Sandy three years ago lost most of their sand to the wind, rain and high surf.
South Carolina authorities mostly switched Monday from search and rescue into "assessment and recovery mode," but Gov. Nikki Haley warned citizens to remain careful as a "wave" of water swelled downstream and dams had to be opened to prevent catastrophic failures above low-lying neighborhoods near the capital.
"South Carolina has gone through a storm of historic proportions," Haley said. "Just because the rain the stops, does not mean that we are out of the woods."
Indeed, shortly after the governor's news conference, authorities evacuated an area on the northeast side of Columbia after a dam on Rockyford Lake burst around 2 p.m. Monday.
The 16.6 inches of rain that fell at Gills Creek near downtown Columbia on Sunday made for one of the rainiest days recorded at a U.S. weather station in more than 16 years.
Rescue crews used boats on Sunday to evacuate the family of Jeff Whalen, whose house backs up on Gills Creek.
"I got up around 6:15 and a neighbor called to tell us we should get out as soon as we can," Whalen said. "About that point it was about a foot below the door and when we left it was a foot in the house. It came quickly obviously."
An Associated Press reporter surveying the scene by helicopter saw the entire eastern side of the capital city awash in floodwater. Neither trailer parks nor upscale neighborhoods were spared: One mansion's swimming pool was filled with a yellowish broth.
South Carolina is accustomed to water, but not like this.
The state hosts 30,000 miles of rivers and streams that mostly run from the Appalachians to the sea, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It also has another 24,000 miles of "perennial waterways" - streams that are usually dry but can turn deadly in flash floods. Now swollen by a week of rain, they have carved new channels through an aging infrastructure.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, 1,048 of the 9,275 bridges were structurally deficient before this storm. Some 550 roads and bridges remained closed on Monday, including nearly 75 miles of Interstate 95. The governor said they will need close inspection to ensure they're safe.
Some towns were entirely cut off. About 60 miles southeast of the capital, all four roads leading into the county seat of Manning were closed, isolating 4,000 people. Many smaller communities in Clarendon County are in a similar predicament, Sheriff Randy Garrett said.
"I'm the sheriff of a bunch of islands," Garrett said.
The national guard's Blackhawk helicopters were the best - and only - way to reach some places, and authorities were just starting to identify "vulnerable areas that may not be completely obvious," said Livingston, a two-star general.

Several children said that clowns were offering them money to follow them into the woods, close to the house by the pond. (The police say they have found no evidence of clown paraphernalia at the house.)”*

Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population of 129,272 as of the 2010 United States Census. The 1,000-year rain event has set records all over the state, flooding entire towns. At least six people have died from the floods in South Carolina since the rain began to fall days ago.
The rain hasn't subsided everywhere yet. In northeastern South Carolina, where areas like Myrtle Beach experienced severe flooding on Sunday, heavy rainfall continued Monday, and officials warned life-threatening impacts would persist into the week.
"The flooding is unprecedented and historical," said Dr. Marshall Shepherd, a meteorologist and director of the atmospheric sciences program at the University of Georgia, in an email to The Associated Press.
The University of South Carolina announced Monday classes will be canceled due to the floods. Parts of Columbia, including the USC campus, lost water service, and plans were being made to deliver bottled water and portable restrooms to the students Monday morning.
City officials have released a statement issuing a boil water advisory to all 375,000 of its water customers, advising them to vigorously boil their water for a full minute at the least. Any ice made from water that was not boiled beforehand should also not be used.
Swift-water rescue teams plucked hundreds of residents from stranded cars and flooded homes all over the state.
"Move to higher ground now. This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation," wrote the National Weather Service's Charleston office in a Sunday morning flash flood statement.
Officials claim it may take weeks or months to assess all of the closed roads and bridges, including a 75-mile stretch of I-95, the freeway that connects Miami to Washington, D.C. to New York.
Hundreds of roads remain closed Monday across the state; the South Carolina Department of Transportation has a full list here.

In eastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina, totals will range from 12 to 24 inches, nearly half of the normal rainfall for an entire year in some areas.
"With records being broken for both rainfall and creek levels, it is easy to see why flood waters are inundating so many roads and communities," stated AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski, "and unfortunately, more rain will only worsen the life-threatening situation into Heavy rainfall began across much of the East Coast on Thursday. While a good portion of the East Coast has had the heavy rain taper to showers or even drizzle, a band of heavy rain continues to sit over South Carolina and far southeastern North Carolina.
Even though Hurricane Joaquin is tracking away from the United States, the torrential rainfall developed due to a combination of tropical moisture and a non-tropical system.
Lives and property will be severely threatened where the heavy rain hits the same areas for several hours.
An additional 3 to 6 inches of rain will fall in northeastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina through Monday.
Locally higher amounts are possible in areas where the heavy rain band sits for a long duration of time. Rainfall rates could reach 1 and 2 inches of rain per hour.
According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Michael Doll, "Storm drains will be unable to keep up with the extreme rainfall rates and entire towns will become lakes."
Flood waters threaten to enter more homes and businesses, as well as submerge vehicles. Motorists who venture out amid the flooding and torrential rain run the risk of getting stranded or could put their lives in danger as more roads will go under water. Hundreds of swift water rescues have been performed since Saturday night, according to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.

Historic flooding devastates South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- People across South Carolina got an object lesson Monday in how you can dodge a hurricane and still get hammered.
Authorities struggled to get water to communities swamped by it, and with waterlogged dams overflowing, bridges collapsing, hundreds of roads inundated and floodwaters rolling down to the coast, the state was anything but done with this disaster.
"This is a Hugo-level event," said Maj. Gen. Robert Livingston, head of the South Carolina National Guard, referring to the September 1989 hurricane that devastated Charleston. "We didn't see this level of erosion in Hugo. ... This water doesn't fool around."
On Monday evening, the North Carolina Department of Public Service confirmed a total of two weather-related fatalities while South Carolina DPS confirmed 11 weather-related fatalities, bringing the total in the Carolina's to 13 fatalities.
Much-feared Hurricane Joaquin missed the East Coast, but fueled what experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called a "fire hose" of tropical moisture that aimed directly at the state. A solid week of rainfall killed at least 13 people, sent about 1,000 to shelters and left about 40,000 without drinkable water.
One of latest to die was McArthur Woods, 56, who drove around a barricade and drowned Sunday night. His passenger managed to climb on top of the sedan, which stalled in the rushing water. A firefighter rescued her after someone heard her screams.
"She came out the window. How she got on top of the car and stayed there like she did with that water-- there's a good Lord," Kershaw County Coroner David West said.
By Monday, the heaviest rains had moved into the mid-Atlantic states. Along the Jersey Shore, some beaches devastated by Superstorm Sandy three years ago lost most of their sand to the wind, rain and high surf.
South Carolina authorities mostly switched Monday from search and rescue into "assessment and recovery mode," but Gov. Nikki Haley warned citizens to remain careful as a "wave" of water swelled downstream and dams had to be opened to prevent catastrophic failures above low-lying neighborhoods near the capital.
"South Carolina has gone through a storm of historic proportions," Haley said. "Just because the rain the stops, does not mean that we are out of the woods."
Indeed, shortly after the governor's news conference, authorities evacuated an area on the northeast side of Columbia after a dam on Rockyford Lake burst around 2 p.m. Monday.
The 16.6 inches of rain that fell at Gills Creek near downtown Columbia on Sunday made for one of the rainiest days recorded at a U.S. weather station in more than 16 years.
Rescue crews used boats on Sunday to evacuate the family of Jeff Whalen, whose house backs up on Gills Creek.
"I got up around 6:15 and a neighbor called to tell us we should get out as soon as we can," Whalen said. "About that point it was about a foot below the door and when we left it was a foot in the house. It came quickly obviously."
An Associated Press reporter surveying the scene by helicopter saw the entire eastern side of the capital city awash in floodwater. Neither trailer parks nor upscale neighborhoods were spared: One mansion's swimming pool was filled with a yellowish broth.
South Carolina is accustomed to water, but not like this.
The state hosts 30,000 miles of rivers and streams that mostly run from the Appalachians to the sea, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It also has another 24,000 miles of "perennial waterways" - streams that are usually dry but can turn deadly in flash floods. Now swollen by a week of rain, they have carved new channels through an aging infrastructure.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, 1,048 of the 9,275 bridges were structurally deficient before this storm. Some 550 roads and bridges remained closed on Monday, including nearly 75 miles of Interstate 95. The governor said they will need close inspection to ensure they're safe.
Some towns were entirely cut off. About 60 miles southeast of the capital, all four roads leading into the county seat of Manning were closed, isolating 4,000 people. Many smaller communities in Clarendon County are in a similar predicament, Sheriff Randy Garrett said.
"I'm the sheriff of a bunch of islands," Garrett said.
The national guard's Blackhawk helicopters were the best - and only - way to reach some places, and authorities were just starting to identify "vulnerable areas that may not be completely obvious," said Livingston, a two-star general.

This tale sounds like a mishmash of newspaper clippings and pages ripped from Stephen King novels, but these are actually details taken from a report filed by the sheriff’s office in Greenville County, S.C., last week, after several residents at an apartment complex there said that people in clown makeup had been terrorizing both children and adults.
Several children said that clowns were offering them money to follow them into the woods, close to the house by the pond. (The police say they have found no evidence of clown paraphernalia at the house.)”*

Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population of 129,272 as of the 2010 United States Census. As of July 1, 2013, the city's population was estimated to be 133,358 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 2014 release). The name Columbia was a poetic term used for the United States, originating from the name of Christopher Columbus. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship and largest university, and is also the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. In 1860, the city was the location of the South Carolina Secession Convention, which marked the departure of the first state from the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.
Downtown revitalization
The city of Columbia has recently accomplished a number of urban redevelopment projects and has several more planned.[27] The historic Congaree Vista, a 1,200-acre (5 km2) district running from the central business district toward the Congaree river, features a number of historic buildings that have been rehabilitated since its revitalization begun in the late 1980s. Of note is the adaptive reuse of the Confederate Printing Plant on Gervais and Huger, used to print Confederate bills during the American Civil War. The city cooperated with Publix grocery stores to preserve the look. This won Columbia an award from the International Downtown Association.[28] The Vista district is also where the region's convention center and anchor Hilton hotel with a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse restaurant are located. Other notable developments under construction and recently completed include high-end condos and townhomes, hotels, and mixed-use structures.
The older buildings lining the Vista's main drag, Gervais, now house art galleries, restaurants, unique shops, and professional office space. Near the end of Gervais is the South Carolina State Museum and the EdVenture Children's Museum. Private student housing and some residential projects are going up nearby; the CanalSide development[29] at the site of the old Central Correctional Institution, is the most high profile. At full build-out, the development will have 750 residential units and provides access to Columbia's waterfront. Lady Street between Huger and Assembly streets in the Vista and the Five Points neighborhood have undergone beautification projects, which mainly consisted of replacing curbs and gutters, and adding brick-paved sidewalks and angled parking.

Columbia is the capital of and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with a population of 129,272 as of the 2010 United States Census. As of July 1, 2013, the city's population was estimated to be 133,358 (U.S. Census Bureau, July 2014 release). The name Columbia was a poetic term used for the United States, originating from the name of Christopher Columbus. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina, the state's flagship and largest university, and is also the site of Fort Jackson, the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training. In 1860, the city was the location of the South Carolina Secession Convention, which marked the departure of the first state from the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War.
Downtown revitalization
The city of Columbia has recently accomplished a number of urban redevelopment projects and has several more planned.[27] The historic Congaree Vista, a 1,200-acre (5 km2) district running from the central business district toward the Congaree river, features a number of historic buildings that have been rehabilitated since its revitalization begun in the late 1980s. Of note is the adaptive reuse of the Confederate Printing Plant on Gervais and Huger, used to print Confederate bills during the American Civil War. The city cooperated with Publix grocery stores to preserve the look. This won Columbia an award from the International Downtown Association.[28] The Vista district is also where the region's convention center and anchor Hilton hotel with a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse restaurant are located. Other notable developments under construction and recently completed include high-end condos and townhomes, hotels, and mixed-use structures.
The older buildings lining the Vista's main drag, Gervais, now house art galleries, restaurants, unique shops, and professional office space. Near the end of Gervais is the South Carolina State Museum and the EdVenture Children's Museum. Private student housing and some residential projects are going up nearby; the CanalSide development[29] at the site of the old Central Correctional Institution, is the most high profile. At full build-out, the development will have 750 residential units and provides access to Columbia's waterfront. Lady Street between Huger and Assembly streets in the Vista and the Five Points neighborhood have undergone beautification projects, which mainly consisted of replacing curbs and gutters, and adding brick-paved sidewalks and angled parking.

The festival will excite the senses and highlight the rich diversity of the music, food, people and the culture of South Carolina.
ENTERTAINMENT
The festival will come alive with the sounds of SC from the Beach Music that will evoke a summer night's shagging at the beach to R&B; representing the region as well as Gospel music. Confirmed entertainment at the festival will include Plair All-Stars, Frontline and Freedom Temple Gospel Choir.
The Catawba Indian Nation will perform several drum and dance songs and will sell pottery and other Native American crafts.

Fried fish, barbecue, fried chicken and turkey, sausage gumbo, po' boy sandwiches, corn bread, peach cobbler, red velvet cake and assorted other Southern specialties are all on the menu along with SC craft beers, and Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka.

Zumba 2012 (Palmetto Health Heart Hospital, Carolina Coliseum, Columbia, South Carolina)
We tried to break the world record again this year. Unfortunately, we missed our goal, unlike last year where we did Zumba for 30 minutes and had over 1,100 people. The record has since been broken twice, and this was the attempt for 2,200 people. The current record is 2,012 by Zumbawear UK at Marble Hill, Twickenham, UK, on 11 June 2011. Shoutouts to Mrs. South Carolina and Carmen!

The USC Dance Program recently achieved national recognition in the April 2014 edition of Dance Magazine. The piece, “Ballet Goes to College,” lists USC as one one of the top three non-conservatory programs to consider which offer specialization in classical ballet.
Our undergraduate program combines a rigorous dance classroom and studio environment with the depth and breadth of an excellent liberal arts education. The dance program, founded by Professor Susan E. Anderson, has established a long legacy of excellence. The program attracts highly motivated students from across the country and abroad, who are committed to rigorous development of their natural abilities through study combined with practice, leading to a life enriched by the art of dance.
Working from a solid foundational core of dance courses, students have the option of developing additional competencies with an emphasis in either Performance and Choreography or Dance Education K-12 Certification. All majors in both emphases study together in studio, performance, choreography and dance academic coursework. Dance Education K-12 Certification students begin their dance education course work after completing the foundational courses, however they continue studio and performance work with Performance and Choreography emphasis majors.
Our experienced studio faculty strives to instill a sound foundation of guided practice in the disciplines and principles of classical ballet, contemporary dance and jazz. The program has a long established specialty in ballet infused with the energy of cutting-edge contemporary dance. In conjunction with the College of Education, the dance program also offers students the opportunity to pursue South Carolina K-12 Teachers Certification, in addition to pursuing a degree in dance. The focus of the emphasis is pedagogical, but also includes training in a variety of dance techniques and performance, as well as theoretical studies. Students are required to participate in an internship in student teaching in local public schools.
Performance is as an essential experience and our performance companies are designed to challenge serious students with a variety of opportunities. It is our desire that each student obtain essential intellectual, creative and physical experiences through individual and collaborative experiences. Our performance seasons routinely feature the works of legendary choreographers such as George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Martha Graham, demonstrating the diversity, as well as technical excellence, required to perform these iconic masterworks.
