Babe Ruth
George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948) was an American professional baseball player whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935. Nicknamed "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat", he began his MLB career as a stellar left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth established many MLB batting (and some pitching) records, including career home runs (714), runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164); the latter two still stand today. Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. He was one of the first five inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
At age seven, Ruth was sent to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory where he learned life lessons and baseball skills from Brother Matthias Boutlier of the Christian Brothers, the school's disciplinarian and a capable baseball player. In 1914, Ruth was signed to play minor-league baseball for the Baltimore Orioles but was soon sold to the Red Sox. By 1916, he had built a reputation as an outstanding pitcher who sometimes hit long home runs, a feat unusual for any player in the pre-1920 dead-ball era. Although Ruth twice won 23 games in a season as a pitcher and was a member of three World Series championship teams with Boston, he wanted to play every day and was allowed to convert to an outfielder. With regular playing time, he broke the MLB single-season home run record in 1919.

Babe Ruth (band)
Babe Ruth are a rock music group, primarily active through the 1970s, from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. Their characteristically 'heavy' sound is marked by powerful vocals from Janita (Jenny) Haan and full arrangements by Alan Shacklock. They are acknowledged as having more commercial success in North America than in their home country.
Career
A predecessor of the group, called Shacklock after guitarist Alan Shacklock, was formed in 1970. Members included Janita Haan and Dave Hewitt, with Dave Punshon and Dick Powell later joining. The first release was their single "Wells Fargo"; their first album, First Base, went gold in Canada. In 1973, Ed Spevock replaced Powell and Chris Holmes replaced Punshon on the second album. In 1975, Steve Gurl, keyboardist from Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey replaced Holmes for the third album. The same year, Shacklock left the band to become a record producer and Bernie Marsden (Wild Turkey) joined the team for the fourth album. After this, Haan and Hewitt left.

Post-operative condition satisfactory.” The truth was that Ruth had cancer, a tumor on a carotid artery, and surgery was able to remove only part of it.
A number of Ruth’s supporters, including Chicago’s Emory Perry, called on Chandler and suggested that Opening Day in every ballpark be declared “Babe Ruth Day” on an annual basis, with proceeds going to a planned Babe Ruth Foundation.
Not long after Ruth’s discharge, Chandler announced that major-league baseball would honor him: “All Americans … have been concerned … over the illness of one of baseball’s most beloved figures. … In order that (everyone) might have an opportunity to unite in a … prayer for his early recovery, Sunday, April 27, has been designated as ‘Babe Ruth Day.’”
The plan was that the center of the day’s activities would be, fittingly, Yankee Stadium and that other clubs would hold “appropriate ceremonies.” Roughly two weeks after Chandler’s announcement, George M. Trautman, president of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, announced that every minor-league team with a game on April 27 would also celebrate Ruth. As it turned out, Japan also honored him that day, in ceremonies in Tokyo and Osaka.
That Sunday afternoon brought pleasant weather to New York, with temperatures in the mid-60s at the time of the ceremony. The park was full, as 58,339 fans turned out, by far the Yankees’ largest attendance in the young season. (While they drew larger crowds later that year, the total was roughly 20,000 higher than Opening Day’s 39,344, previously the team’s biggest 1947 crowd.) In every major-league ballpark hosting a game that day, the attendance was the high-water mark on the season to that point, save in Brooklyn.
Ruth was not there for the end: He had left after the seventh. He made one more visit to the Stadium, roughly 14 months later, when he came for a second ceremony, the retirement of his iconic number 3 jersey. He died on August 16, 1948.

A number of Ruth’s supporters, including Chicago’s Emory Perry, called on Chandler and suggested that Opening Day in every ballpark be declared “Babe Ruth Day” on an annual basis, with proceeds going to a planned Babe Ruth Foundation.
Not long after Ruth’s discharge, Chandler announced that major-league baseball would honor him: “All Americans … have been concerned … over the illness of one of baseball’s most beloved figures. … In order that (everyone) might have an opportunity to unite in a … prayer for his early recovery, Sunday, April 27, has been designated as ‘Babe Ruth Day.’”
The plan was that the center of the day’s activities would be, fittingly, Yankee Stadium and that other clubs would hold “appropriate ceremonies.” Roughly two weeks after Chandler’s announcement, George M. Trautman, president of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, announced that every minor-league team with a game on April 27 would also celebrate Ruth. As it turned out, Japan also honored him that day, in ceremonies in Tokyo and Osaka.
That Sunday afternoon brought pleasant weather to New York, with temperatures in the mid-60s at the time of the ceremony. The park was full, as 58,339 fans turned out, by far the Yankees’ largest attendance in the young season. (While they drew larger crowds later that year, the total was roughly 20,000 higher than Opening Day’s 39,344, previously the team’s biggest 1947 crowd.) In every major-league ballpark hosting a game that day, the attendance was the high-water mark on the season to that point, save in Brooklyn.
Ruth was not there for the end: He had left after the seventh. He made one more visit to the Stadium, roughly 14 months later, when he came for a second ceremony, the retirement of his iconic number 3 jersey. He died on August 16, 1948.

Babe Ruth
George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948) was an American professional baseball player whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935. Nicknamed "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat", he began his MLB career as a stellar left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth established many MLB batting (and some pitching) records, including career home runs (714), runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164); the latter two still stand today. Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. He was one of the first five inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
At age seven, Ruth was sent to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory where he learned life lessons and baseball skills from Brother Matthias Boutlier of the Christian Brothers, the school's disciplinarian and a capable baseball player. In 1914, Ruth was signed to play minor-league baseball for the Baltimore Orioles but was soon sold to the Red Sox. By 1916, he had built a reputation as an outstanding pitcher who sometimes hit long home runs, a feat unusual for any player in the pre-1920 dead-ball era. Although Ruth twice won 23 games in a season as a pitcher and was a member of three World Series championship teams with Boston, he wanted to play every day and was allowed to convert to an outfielder. With regular playing time, he broke the MLB single-season home run record in 1919.
