This promises to be epic.

Lamborghini has released its riposte to the fastest cars in the world, refining its Aventador supercar for 2017.

Named Aventador S, the model features additional technology, a boost in power and more dramatic - and effective - styling intended to keep the model on top of its game.

The most obvious change surrounds its radically reprofiled front end, which takes inspiration from the brand's ultra-rare Centenario special, producing 130 per cent more downforce than its predecessor. Similar changes at the rear elicit an additional 50 per cent in downforce at speed while reducing drag  by 400 per cent.

The Italian brand has followed the likes of Porsche and Ferrari by introducing four-wheel-steering on its flagship model in an effort to improve agility at lower speeds and stability on the interesting side of 200km/h. It also borrows active suspension from the limited-edition Aventador SV, which could make the regular Aventador coupe slightly more liveable than before.

Importantly, the brand has also added a new "Ego" drive mode to the car that allows drivers to tailor powertrain, suspension and stability control systems to a their preferences, instead of making do with pre-set street, sport and track settings that may not suit all conditions.

Revisions to the Aventador's 6.5-litre V12 liberated an additional 29kW, taking the total count to a staggering 544kW at 8400rpm. Setting aside sold-out models such as the Aventador SV and Ferrari's F12 TDF, the upgraded Aventador is just 1kW shy of the most powerful production model on sale, Ferrari's F12 Berlinetta coupe.

But Lamborghini claims the Aventador is quicker, dashing to 100km/h in just 2.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 350km/h.

The updated Aventador starts at $788,914 plus on-road costs - around $27,000 more than the previous model - though that number has the potential to climb much higher.

Delicately styled centre-lock wheels from the limited-edition Aventador SV are available as an option alongside naked carbon fibre bodywork and suitably lurid paint. Customers can tailor the car's cabin to their tastes through Lamborghini's Ad Personam program, which has the potential to push the cost of ownership beyond $1 million by the time the car is registered on the road.

Customers lucky enough to buy the new Aventador will benefit from an improved all-digital dashboard display and a widescreen stereo readout with Apple CarPlay connectivity. Track fiends can specify their cars with telemetry system that records lap times and other track data that might prove this as the fastest new car in Australia.
