Hungary when István was considering constitutional reform and becoming a modern (for the time state) was considering both Rome and Constantinople as the originator of the Hungarian crown. The debate is were there two Romes? Was Constantinople meaningfully different. Was there ever a Byzantine Empire.

That's wrong. Catalans are an adult, civilized European nation. Give them a proper, legal, fair, internationally recognized referendum and they will live with the result no matter how close it is. And once they have made a collective decision they will pull in one direction.
