Police hunt murderer after he skips parole

  • 271 reading now

A convicted murderer with a lengthy criminal history has skipped parole and is being hunted by police.

John Douglas Hartwick and two others murdered Steven Borg and seriously injured Mr Borg's girlfriend near Frankston in May 2001 when they set upon the couple with metal poles and a carving knife.

Hartwick, his former wife Lisa Hartwick and her friend Celia Clayton appealed their convictions to the High Court in 2006, but their appeals were dismissed.

It is believed John Hartwick has about 70 prior convictions.

His parole was cancelled last Thursday after he failed to comply with his release conditions.

Police visited his property in Norlane, Geelong, that night but found no trace of him. They have been searching for him since.

They said Hartwick broke his right ankle on November 28 and was wearing a moon boot to get around.

He is described as being 175 centimetres tall with a thin build, grey hair and tattoos.

Police are urging anyone who sights Hartwick not to approach him and to contact triple zero immediately.

Detective Superintendent Peter De Santo, of the anti-gang division, will give further detail about Hartwick's breach of parole at a media conference on Monday.
