Victoria set for a sunny Christmas holiday

Melbourne will enjoy a balmy 30° Christmas Day, with temperatures across the state set to reach up to 40° in Victoria's north-west.

"We are looking at mostly sunny conditions with a top temperature of 30 degrees, which is five degrees above average," Mr Dickson said.

Mr Dickson said there might be a southerly wind during the afternoon, with a sea breeze.

"Keep an eye on the forecast over the next few days, but it does look like it will be a warm Christmas," he said.

However, those looking for hotter weather can head to Victoria's north-west, where it is expected to reach a top of 40 degrees.

"We are forecasting 40 degrees across parts of the Mallee, 39 degrees in Mildura and Swan Hill, and up to 40 degrees in Hopetoun in the north-west."

The forecasts are up to 10 degrees above average.

Mr Dickson said Christmas Day weather could be unpredictable.

"We have had a large range of temperatures recorded on Christmas Day," he said.

"The coldest was 14.5 degrees back in 2006 and the hottest was 40.7 in 1907."
