AUSTRALIAN MUSIC VAULT'S MELBOURNE HOME

A long campaign to establish a musical shrine in Melbourne that attracts even more visitors than AC/DC Lane has been realised. From November next year, Arts Centre Melbourne will be home to the Australian Music Vault, featuring a free exhibition of the Arts Centre's extensive collection of music memorabilia, an integrated digital program, educational material, performances and, for VIPs, backstage access to a free, fully stocked bar.

That last part about the bar is not true, I made it up. What is true, according to Victorian Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley, is that Australia's music hall of fame will be created as part of the state government's $22 million Music Works program. "Victoria is the creative state of Melbourne, one of the great music cities of the world, " the Minister said. "The industry has been calling for a hall of fame for many years and we are proud to be working with the industry to make it a reality." Mushroom boss Michael Gudinski, who attended this week's announcement, said the Music Vault was being established "in Australia's undisputed music capital, Melbourne". "From the political to the celebratory, the power and influence of music on our culture is undeniable," Gudinski said. "Creating a permanent home to honour our rich and diverse music landscape has been a passion of mine for many years."

Gudinski joins music industry identity Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, Kylie Minogue and Archie Roach as founding patrons of the Australian Music Vault. Local musicians the Pierce Brothers, who began their summer tour this week, arrived at the very un-rock'n'roll pre-midday announcement to provide a blast of welcome live music. Congratulations to all those who have made the Australian Music Vault open in Melbourne.

OFF THE GRID FESTIVAL

The sun has finally poked through the clouds in Melbourne, just in time for Off the Grid festival featuring No Zu, Miss Goldie, Izabel, J'nett, Andee Frost, Andras and more at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Arts on December 21. Following last year's hugely successful event, this solar powered celebration will put power generated from the festival back into the grid with the aim of funding future live events. Off the Grid will also host some of Australia's leading environmentalists, architects, activists and foodies on the ACCA forecourt in a "conversational style discussion" about powering Melbourne into the future.
