June 21 -- Hello World’s Ashlee Vance paid a recent visit to Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik to see the next part of the green energy story. He found a start-up called Icewind that is building a new type of funky wind turbine designed to perform well in low-wind conditions but also to slow itself down in high-winds, preventing it from catching on fire or ripping apart.

The Enercon E-126 is a wind turbine model manufactured by the German company Enercon. With a hub height of 135 m (443 ft), rotor diameter of 126 m (413 ft) and a total height of 198 m (650 ft), this large model can generate up to 7.58 megawatts of power per turbine. The power output of the generator was changed from 6 MW to 7 MW after technical revisions were performed in 2009.
The weight of the foundation of the turbine tower is about 2,500 t, the tower itself 2,800 t, the machine housing 128 t, the generator 220 t, the rotor (including the blade) 364 t. The total weight is about 6,000 t.
The first turbine of this model was installed in Emden, Germany in 2007. The list price of one unit is $14 million plus install costs.

Homemade Wind Turbine Generator! Wind Power Generator. Easy DIY Instructions. items needed: PVC Pipe, propeller blade, DC motor and wire. Stand is made of 3/4" PVC. Produces essentially "free" usable power to run radios and small lights etc... add the optional battery/inverter for making AC power. adding a storage battery also makes it possible to run larger items (whether the wind is blowing or not) ...and add a small inverter to run AC powered items. this "table top" size model would be useful in many off-grid situations including SHTF/Emergency/Power Outage/Camping/Rural Living etc... simple assembly/disassembly. durable, lightweight and portable. notes: propeller blades of this kind can be found at your local hobby store. use PVC Pipe Cement to make the stand more "permanent". the wire i used is from an old extension cord. since filming i've reduced the length of the wire from 8 ft. down to 2 ft. (shortening the wire increases power output). low power radio was used. operates on as little as 28-35ma at 2v-3v. (43ma at 2.4v was average output using small desk fan). volt/amp readings on meter were all over the place when i used the leaf blower (5 to 10 times higher vs. desk fan). leaf blower produces wind up to 140MPH. i blasted the wind turbine with blower from about 3 feet away for over 5 mins and it stood firm entire time.

Wind power
Air flow through wind turbines or sails can produce significant mechanical power. Windmills are used for their mechanical power, windpumps for water pumping, and sails to propel ships, but the most frequent current use is to turn a generator for electrical power. Wind power, as an alternative to burning fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and uses little land. The net effects on the environment are far less problematic than those of nonrenewable power sources.
Wind farms consist of many individual wind turbines which are connected to the electric power transmission network. Onshore wind is an inexpensive source of electricity, competitive with or in many places cheaper than coal or gas plants. Offshore wind is steadier and stronger than on land, and offshore farms have less visual impact, but construction and maintenance costs are considerably higher. Small onshore wind farms can feed some energy into the grid or provide electricity to isolated off-grid locations.

With a hub height of 135 m (443 ft), rotor diameter of 126 m (413 ft) and a total height of 198 m (650 ft), this large model can generate up to 7.58 megawatts of power per turbine. The power output of the generator was changed from 6 MW to 7 MW after technical revisions were performed in 2009.
The weight of the foundation of the turbine tower is about 2,500 t, the tower itself 2,800 t, the machine housing 128 t, the generator 220 t, the rotor (including the blade) 364 t. The total weight is about 6,000 t.
The first turbine of this model was installed in Emden, Germany in 2007. The list price of one unit is $14 million plus install costs.

Produces essentially "free" usable power to run radios and small lights etc... add the optional battery/inverter for making AC power. adding a storage battery also makes it possible to run larger items (whether the wind is blowing or not) ...and add a small inverter to run AC powered items. this "table top" size model would be useful in many off-grid situations including SHTF/Emergency/Power Outage/Camping/Rural Living etc... simple assembly/disassembly. durable, lightweight and portable. notes: propeller blades of this kind can be found at your local hobby store. use PVC Pipe Cement to make the stand more "permanent". the wire i used is from an old extension cord. since filming i've reduced the length of the wire from 8 ft. down to 2 ft. Block Island Wind Farm
BLOCK ISLAND WIND FARM: America's first offshore wind farm. Comprised of 5 wind turbines, the Block Island Wind Farm is scheduled to begin full operation by November 2016, providing 30 megawatts of clean, renewable energy to Block Island and Rhode Island, which is enough to power 17,000 homes. Over the course of the two construction seasons totaling 18 weeks, 90 piledrivers from Locals 94, 56, 43 & 24 installed the jacket-leg foundations for the wind turbines, amounting to 170,000 hours worked. The Musselroe Wind Farm site is 100 kilometres north-east of Launceston and 20 kilometres north of Gladstone. It is an agricultural property owned by Hydro Tasmania.
