Emigration is the act of leaving one's resident country with the intent to settle elsewhere. Conversely, immigration describes the movement of persons into one country from another. Both are acts of migration across national boundaries.
Demographers examine push and pull factors for people to be pushed out of one place and attracted to another. There can be a desire to escape negative circumstances such as shortages of land or jobs, or unfair treatment. People can be pulled to the opportunities available elsewhere. Seeking refugee status in a foreign country from oppressive conditions may lead to permanent emigration.
Involuntary migration refers to groups that are forced to abandon their native country, such as by enforced population transfer or the threat of ethnic cleansing.
Patterns of emigration have been shaped by numerous economic, social, and political changes throughout the world in the last few hundred years. For instance, millions of individuals fled poverty, violence, and political turmoil in Europe to settle in the Americas and Oceania during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

It is hard to get exact figures for how many UK citizens now live overseas but in 2012, a Home Office report suggested the total is 4.7 million, with over a million of those in Australia and New Zealand following closely behind. The reality is, many more of us harbour dreams of moving away and trying somewhere new, but we’re often held back by our preconceived ideas of what it takes to move away from the UK. That’s where PSS International Removals can help. We’re a specialised international removals company with over 32 years of experience. We have successfully helped thousands of customers move to many destinations throughout the world.

Over two million Poles now live abroad. Few are planning to return, while the numbers joining them are growing. The principal reasons for emigration are connected to Poland’s lower wages. The most popular destinations are Germany, Britain, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the US. From blue collar to white collar, Poland is suffering a significant labor drain - despite having a booming economy. The mass emigration is also taking its toll on the older generation; traditionally sons and daughters would take care of their parents - a tradition that is waning. More and more Irish people are heading overseas. During the economic boom of the 1990s, Ireland was seen as an attractive destination for foreign workers, but that time has passed. In particular young men from rural areas are taking their job hunt beyond Ireland's borders. Favored destinations include Canada, as well as traditional ones like Britain and the US. From verging on bankruptcy a few years ago, things are looking up for Ireland. But while it recently exited its international bailout from the IMF, it's not stopping young adults exiting the country. Statistics show emigration numbers from the Emerald Isle are only rising, as people look to leave continued austerity behind. RT's Tesa Arcilla reports. One striking effect of EU enlargement in 2004 was the number of Polish people moving abroad in search of better pay. Hundreds of thousands flocked to the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Scandinavia. Since then, Poland has maintained steady economic growth, while Western Europe has not. Despite this, figures for 2012 show the record figure of 2.27 million Poles living abroad could soon be broken again. 10/31/2013 FOCUS.
