A soap opera, soapie, or soap is a serial drama on television or radio which features related story lines about the lives of many characters. The stories usually focus on emotional relationships to the point of melodrama. The term soap opera originated from such dramas being typically sponsored by soap manufacturers in the past.
The first series considered to be a "soap opera" was Painted Dreams, which debuted on October 20, 1930 on Chicago radio station WGN. Early radio series such as Painted Dreams were broadcast in weekday daytime slots, usually five days a week, when most of the listeners would be housewives; thus, the shows were aimed at and consumed by a predominantly female audience. In the name, "soap" refers to the soap and detergent commercials originally broadcast during the shows, which were aimed at women who were cleaning their houses at the time of listening or viewing, and "opera" refers to the melodramatic character of the shows.
The first nationally broadcast radio soap opera was Clara, Lu, and Em, which aired on the NBC Blue Network at 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time on January 27, 1931.

Soap Opera Digest editorial director Stephanie Sloan spills the daytime tea!
So emotional for all Sheila Carter's fans! + It's so good to see Marylin Alex over excited for her tv daughter's win;)
1991 was a great year for awards for Another World! In addition to the four winners I've included in this clip, AW also was honored with nominations for Stephen Schnetzer as outstanding lead actor, & Tom Eplin & Carmen Duncan for outstanding villain & villainess. With the 10-minute time limit for YouTube videos, I decided to only include the actors that took home awards at this ceremony...I also included the montage & presentation for the award for outstanding love story because it featured a lot of Frankie/Cass/Kathleen clips, & because "Dean & Jenna" were the presenters. And yes, that is Anne Heche with brown hair -- she dyed it for a while right after she left AW to be considered for different movie roles. Enjoy!!

Here is another nearly complete episode of One Life to Live from March 1995, in which Soap Opera Digest editor Robert Rorke described as the "anti-soap".
Now that he has returned to starring in the daytime drama "Days of Our Lives," Joey is thrilled when his name is used in a Soap Opera Digest crossword puzzle. However, he is reluctant to let the magazine do a profile of him, because his last interview got him into so much trouble that he was terminated from his previous engagement with the show. Eager to see her own name in print, Rachel persuades him to reconsider so he can mention her, but Joey insists that all of his friends be present at the interview to ensure that he doesn't say anything controversial this time. The friends reminisce about Joey's past indiscretions in a series of clips from prior episodes. SASHA ALEXANDER ("Presidio Med," "Dawson's Creek") guest stars.

I lost your room keys so sue me
would you be interested
in hearing what I have to say for myself
and after all the confusion
illusions seem to say
you're going to be a soap opera star
You're instamatic not static
to get what you reach for
you're a piece of work, yes you are
Always a big deal, what you feel
so be real with us now
we know those day time spots taught you how
to be right now
so show us how
was it really that bad
was it really that bad
after all that you said
after all that you did
I felt you lips when you kissed me
amazing just to see
you're a superstar, forget TV
Forget the numbers and faces
remember who you are
we still love our sop opera star
you're spectacular
